Hey all,
Just found this the other day. I think that Paul Westerberg is as good a
songwriter as rock'n'roll has ever produced. And yes I include the Beatles.
Here's a link to video of a show they did when they were just getting underway
(Tommy Stinson looks like he's 12).

Even at this tender age they were just a little bit more tuneful than their
punk/hardcore compatriots, and Westerberg drips scrawny charisma. The closing
cover of a Hank Williams tune is, to me, precious. But then again I grew
up 90 miles from Minneapolis at precisely this time.

P.S. Apparently working with Westerberg is a singular pain in the ass, but
hell, I don't think Miles Davis was a really nice guy either.

You know, I never did see them at the Grotto. It was closing down by the time
I got to New Haven.
I saw the Mats probably 4-5 times. I saw one of the legendary 'Everyone's
way to drunk to play' shows at Maxwell's in New Jersey. A couple times in
MPLS but not too many, I was underage. The best show, oddly, was the last
one I saw with Slim as the second guitar player. They were touring for that
crappy 'Don't Tell a Soul' record but they did all of my favorite tunes,
even one from Sorry Ma. For the last encore Westerberg belted out a version
of Left of the Dial that still makes me shiver when I think about it. His
solo shows are pretty cool too.

Ah yes, the upper midwestern version of Dave Grohl. I really liked his first
CD but don't have any of the others. Quite a talented fellow as well, his
paintings now sell for big bucks. Reportedly also a very decent guy who spent
a lot of time keeping the rest of the guys from killing each other.

It's Westerberg's own nickname for the band, short for The Placemats.
