Need recommendation for good inexpensive phono preamp [message #65929]

Hi all,

Have a co-worker who is 'ripping' his album collection to his computer in
a very dodgy way. We went over the gain staging and he needs a good quality
/ low price phono (turntable) pre-amp.

Chuck, you might be able to find an old Dynaco on ebay or somewhere. They're
not too expensive and sound pretty damn good too. You can also look for an
older amplifier with a turntable input that also has a preamp output. Some
of them did have such a thing.

Check out ART, they make two one with digital out put and one with out. Go
with the one with out, A/D on the digital one is only 16bit. The biggest
problem is the turn table not being grounded. No ground, no good sound.

Since Dave pointed you to swampwater sound, I guess I'll do the same. Check

don't get the USB one, it's only 16bit.

The one listed on page 326 of their catalog is more square, and comes with
a RIAA EQ. It's called the DeeJayPRE II, cost is $39.97

Grounding is the main issue with turn tables!

Correction:

DeeJayPRE is discontinued, but SW may have stock, the cost is $39.97

DeeJayPRE II is $45.97

Chuck,

If you go the old hi-fi amp route, see if you can get your hands on a Leak
amp. You may not find one for 50 bucks, but after the transfers you'll
have a lush stereo power amp to keep and enjoy.

at the store formerly know as radio shack I got a Nextech for $49 and I
quite amazed at how good it sounds
