For some reason, I'm not able to get the SPDIF working as I thought it should.
This is both with the stock studio control library and Mike's newer test
versions.

Anyway, I have a video component cable - high quality 75 ohm cable. I've
basically created a loop by hooking it from SPDIF out to SPDIF in. Cable
is 3 ft. long.

In the pathbay, I've set an external native insert on a pair of channels,
then in the patch bay hooked the inserts up to dL and dR pairs. No audio
gets passed through.

If I do the same thing with normal analog I/O, it works fine.

Ultimately, I'm trying to slave a FW410 interface to work with Reaper and
would like to use the PARIS A/D for capture, passing it back to Reaper digitally.

I'm all ears for ideas here. Thanks!

Oh yeah, this is on XP dual core Athlon64 system.

Just to add to the mystery, I can hook up a Motif Rack to the SPDIF input
on the MEC and clock sync to it, but hooking this digital input up to channels
gives me silence as well.

With sync source set up to digital, I can play back pre-recorded material
just fine, and as soon as I disconnect the SPDIF it stops playing (as expected)
so I know electrically this input has to be working... And I did verify that
it was a good signal since the FW410 hears it good and clean.

BTW, Mike, I noticed that my ADAT card does not show up with the newest control
library, but does show up with the original. There's quite a bit on the debug
console - would that help to see what's going on?

search the newsgroup archives at SVN's webpage for the BT or Tankersley
method, though I think it refers (IIRC) more specifically to the adat ports.
As I recall you have to complete the loop into something more than just
itself.... think it was covered in the Paris Instructional Video at some
point as well if you have that, in the autotune section......

Nice to see your name come across here R dub.

Ahh-HAH, that's why that sounded so familiar - I was scratching my
head. I bet you just nailed it.

Good thoughts. I'll go back and review the bounce down to see if it provides
any clues.

I would think, though, that coming straight from the digital inputs to a
pair of channels for strictly recording (like an external A/D or MIDI sound
module) would be pretty simple wiring - straight from the MEC's digital
inputs to the mixer's channel inputs.

More investigation...

I can't explain why the input won't work in channel mode, but when using any
external insert, the loop must be completed.

That is, you need to patch both the insert send AND return before the insert
will "open". (In fact, this is quite common in the "patched but not tracked
talkback" situation - create a send and return loop for your talkback mic,
and then delete the send patch... the return will remain patched and open,
giving you a talkback on / off from the insert strip on your channel. But I
digress...)

SPDIF inputs in Paris are weird, and it sometimes has to do with clock and
the sequence in which your gear is powered.

Can you verify that Paris can pass its own audio through the loop? Try
this:
Loop the SPDIF output to SPDIF input with a short RCA cable, as you say
you've already done.
Put a piece of audio on Channel 1, MEC / 442 A
Turn on the external insert send on Mixer A Channel 1
In the patchbay, patch Mixer A Insert Send 1 (bottom row) to MEC Master dL
Output (top row)
Patch MEC Master dL Input (bottom row) to Mixer A Insert Return 1 (top
row) --- now the insert should be active / "open".
Patch ANOTHER cabel from MEC Master dL Input (bottom row - same place as the
previous patch) to Mixer A Channel 2.

This should route the audio from Channel 1 to Channel 2 via SPDIF. If you
rec-enable Channel 2, and hit record, your audio from Channel 1 should be
showing up on Channel 2.

This takes external clocking problems out of the picture, because the only
clock source involved is Paris' internal clock (which should be a component
of the SPDIF signal).

Let us know what this does.

Sandy
