itrios, that's great to know. I'll at least try it. Is there
any documentation out there that explains the
use of wires?

Yes good point. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Most engineers consider this AES article to represent the current standard
on this issue.
I recommend purchasing it from AES. Publications will be available at the
October show in NY.

1995.
“Connecting a balanced output to an unbalanced input is much more problematic.
Balanced equipment uses a wide variety of output circuits. The type shown
in Figure 2A and Figure 2B can be damaged when one output is grounded. Others,
including most popular servo-balanced output stages, may become unstable
and oscillate or produce distortion unless one output is grounded right at
the driver. But such a ground, along with the existing one at the unbalanced
input, simply reduces the interface to a completely unbalanced one. Therefore,
all benefit of the balanced output is negated. That's why an external ground
isolator transformer, such as the one shown in Figure 2A, is a foolproof
method: It works with any kind of balanced or unbalanced output.”
____________________________________________
As pointed out, using a transformer is almost always considered the best
option, however like most people working in the real world, I have frequently
used the methods we are discussing. I have also seen opamps and power supplies
fried from inappropriate strapping to ground.

I've had a further think about it and found another peice of gear among my
collection which I can use, and would rather use, for this purpose, which,
far as I can tell from the manual, is happy to have half the balanced output
strapped to ground...
....mind you it is a Behringer, so it's liable to blow up either way...
;o)
Cheers,
Kim.Anybody know a good cheap model? I'm after a wireless headset microphone.
I mean obviously to a degree you get what you pay for, but I'm not super
concerned about sound quality as there wont be that much in the way of vocals.
Obviously headset mics are average in any case. A lot of the purpose of it
will be for use with a vocoder though, so exact tonal quality isn't going
to come through anyhow.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Kim.Rich,
This thing was planned rather haphazardly and on short notice. Up until this
afternoon, it was a no-go because of previous commitments by various
musicians and the sound crews were all committed elsewhere until the 2nd
week of October. There is a very abbreviated 3-4 hour show happening at the
Trimble Hot Springs on the 25th with a few local acts. I just found out
about it about 5:00 PM and I have no idea who is doing sound or what
equipment is even going to be available. It certainly won't be on the scale
that was originally planned. I'm thinking that there may be another larger
effort in mid October though. If this happens, I'll post up here.

>Isn't it the Studio Projects mic pre that has a tube which you
can add/blend into the signal chain in varying degrees? That
sounds like a better way to go if one is looking for a low-cost
preamp with a tube option... at least that way if the solid-
state portion of it is pretty clean, you've got that going for
you, and you can add in however much "ToOb" effect you want.
Heck, Drawmer even has one like that IIRC (but I don't know if
that one is a starved-plate design or not).
You know, I used to think that it was tubes that lent warmth,
but I recall a conversation on r.a.p. wherein Fletcher was
saying that it wasn't the tubes themselves, but rather the
transformers ("what you want is a big hunk of iron in there",
is how he put it), and at this stage, I would tend to agree...
for example, I have a Chandler TG2 pre, and that's not tube,
but it does have x-formers, and that thing does indeed have
plenty of warmth (along with a really nice high end, too, BTW).
One day it'd be nice to be able to quantify "warmth"... I mean
we all know it when we hear it, but what is it, really? Is it a
certain kind of distortion in the low-mids? Is it a slight low-
mid bump with a teensy-tiny little bit of high-end sizzle?
(personally, I'm leaning towards this one) Or is there a
certain narrow frequency range or combination of ranges that if
there's enough content in there relative to the rest of the
spectrum, we perceive it as being "warm-sounding"? (this one's
less likely, because if that were the case, you could EQ in
however much "warmth" you wanted). Like I said, myself, I'm
leaning towards the 2nd example... if you have Howard Stern on
the air in your market (not that I'm a fan of his, but this is
a good example of what I'm talking about) I think his
voice/signal chain is a good example of "warmth" - check it out
sometime if you're not familiar with the sound, or just tune
into his cable show... it's pretty much the same as long as you
have a decent set of speakers on your TV. It's got a bump in
the lows/low-mids, and there's a slight high-end sheen that
could even be described as a very mild "sizzle" (but not too
much). The other people on his show don't sound like that, so
it's him or his particular signal chain, or a combination of
the two. The lower end of his tone isn't all about proximity
effect, either, because even when he's not right on top of the
mic, you still hear that "thing" I'm talking about.
Your thoughts?
