One of my clients wanting to set up a second system at a friend's place
where he does some of his tracking/mixing. He is currently using an 002
(which I think sounds just fine). He has been told by a sales rep that the
003 has "noticably" better converters and preamps. Well, he uses external
pres anyway, so pre's aren't really an issue. I just can't imagine the 003
converters being anywhere close to "noticably better" on a unit with this
price point.

Anyone here A/B'ed the 002 and 003? (His 002 is the full version, not the
002 Rack FWIW, though I would imagine that the converters are the same on
those anyway)

Any possible compatibility issues with moving session files between the two?
(again, I can't imagine why there would be if the software versions were the
same but it never hurts to ask.)

I'm tempted to just advise him to get an 002 Rack and carry on.

Thanks

I've heard that people are not that impressed for the price. Talk is cheap,
in other words, use your own ears. Hopefully somebody will be able to really
chime in here.

Another option is the Black Lion mods.

Well, in my opinion, the best sounding Digi /M-Audio come from the M-Audio
side. The Pro Mix I/O unit not only sounds better (Pre's)but, is way more
flexible than the 002 or 003.. I hear that the 003 uses the better M-Audio
converters. Having said that, the M-audio Pro-Mix offers a lot of option
that the 002 /003 does not.
The Pro Mix is a multi DAW controller. Whereas the 002/003 does not controller
any DAW but PT LE.. Yes, you can use it as an audio interface (ASIO) with
other DAWs, but you can't control faders, transport etc..

Personally I just purchased the M-Audio ProFire Bridge http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/ProFireLightbridge-mai n.html.
32 adapt I/Os.. Killer. Use the same nice converters as the Pro Mix.
I'm using this thing as my bridge into PT M-powered 7.3 and Nuendo..We curretly
have our board hard wired for the Alesis HD24 &Adat LX20(32 channels) via
analog.. With with ProFire, we attached the to the HD24 &Lx20 vai light pipes...

Now we have 32 channels of killer Analog mixing via a 56 channel Soundcraft
Ghost . So we can route on screen channels down to the board to mix.. And
..Real analog (Big Lanes) Mixing bus.. :)

The Nuendo & Pro Tools mixes sound better than Paris .. But, Paris sounds
even better summing thru this board.. mixdown down to a ALesis Masterlink..
