Hi there, i'm new here, and new PARIS user

I recently bought some parts online to build a PARIS rig. A C16, a 442 interface, and an EDS500 card. Can i run version 2.2 or 3.0 on this system? It came with no software that's the reason i'm asking.
Do i need anything else to get this up and running?
I had a few more questions, but can't remember right now. I've had a long day today.
I'm pretty sure i'll remember them later on. Anyways

thanks,

jimmy

Hi there - you should be good to go with those parts (an EDS-500 is the EDS card without the DSP FX) plus some software you can download free - PARIS 2.2 and some drivers etc. Let us know what computer and OS you'll be installing it on and we can give you more detailed info. And welcome to PARIS Very Happy

hi,
thanks for the welcome
i downloaded paris 2.2 from the parisfaqs website
i will be running it on windows xp
since the macs that i have run os x and not os9

i do have one old single core amd xp box. that's where i'm thinking on installing it at the moment. just been busy lately

if the win7 drivers get completed succesfully in the future then i will be getting those and then move the paris stuff to a new box. Smile

with the eds500 i will have to run all the plugs on the cpu then right?
regarding the eds card, can i use a 500 and a 1000 together if i decide to purchase a 1000 later on?

thanks again

Yes. Getting an EDS1000 should be a very high priority for the following reason:

You can run VST and DX plugins, with limitations - they can only be inserted on channel strips (they can't be used on auxes) and you have to be selective about which ones you run - development on the VST/DX subsystems is fixed in time at 2001 technology. EDS 500s can't run EDS FX at all AFAIK.

got the system up and running today.
it was easier than i thought
cloning the hard drive right now before doing anything on the machine just in case. Smile
also ordered an eds1000, and the paris 3 software
Very Happy

edit: Sad can't get any audio output no matter what i try.
i have my monitors connected to outputs 1 and 2 in the 442 interface.
i went into the patchbay and set the mixer A Master Out L to the 442 Out 1, and the Master Out R to the 442 Out 2. Is this the correct way on doing it?
also, i connected my mpc to inputs 1 and 2 on the 442 and made the appropiate connections in the patchbay, i can see the signal going in and see the fader lights go up and down.
Anything i might be missing???

Thanks for your help.

Here are some screenshots just in case

Don't know if this has anything to do with your issue, but instead of Main L + R connecting to the 442's 1 and 2, try connecting mL and mR (monitor Left and Right) there instead.

"Main" is meant to be an output to a master 2-track, or a house mix; "monitor" is meant to be just that - output for you to monitor. Things like "solo" don't affect "Main" (eg you can solo a track while you're printing a mix and your "Mains" remain unaffected). I use mL+mR in the studio to hook my monitors to and L+R to feed other sources.

If that fails, eliminate the (slim) possibility of having two dead outputs by re-patching to 442's output 3 and 4. Check using your headphones too.

I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable about the 442, I've never had anything but MECs. I suppose you've already completely eliminated dead cables as a possibility?

check your monitor level here

index.php?t=getfile&id=687&private=0

Also my C-16 monitor level knob sometimes causes muting.

All I can think of right now is to clean the edge connectors of the EDS card with contact cleaner and re-seat it in the PCI slot (it is a decade old) and do the same for the cable connections between EDS and 442. Hopefully anyone who might have seen this behaviour before can chime in, and I'll get it Wiki'd.

i made the changes in the patchbay to reflect the monitor outs instead of the main outs and also checked the monitor level and its at 11 right now, but still the same. i will try reseating the card and reconnecting all the cables again. thanks for the suggestions. i will report back later.

Yikes - I missed this part completely:

and

Which XP drivers are you using? Just in case this wasn't made clear - you know PARIS was never intended to run on XP "out of the box" using the supplied drivers, and the XP drivers (later additions coded by the community) have to be downloaded and installed separately, right?

You can track the originals down here, or buy Mike's excellent new ones here.

What are you using for a feed. You might try enabling record on those 2 tracks. My bad I just looked back and saw that you had Confused

I see you are in live mode. I'm not familiar with the idiosyncrasies of that. Anyone?

D'oh, Jim's right, that should be checked - hit "P" to call up the project window and check to see which monitoring mode you're in.

"Record Only", for example, means it won't pass audio upon simply arming the track - you'd need to hit record on the transport after. Have you tried playing back any audio files yet, or just the input audio?

I connected an mpc to it, i pressed record and tried recording, but when i hit play i still couldn't see anything. The wave drawings after recording weren't the prettiest. Lol. Are the waveforms displayed all blocky?

They never get quite as "slick" as, say, Nuendo's (hey, it's a decade old Very Happy), but they should be blockier during record and then smooth out somewhat. They look passable enough in 3.0 over here - what screen resolution are you at? Maybe you should post a screenshot of the audio so we can see if it looks as expected.

Lol, ok. I'll try recording something and post a screenshot.
I have a question, i disabled the internal soundcard. Right now when i go to check in sounds and notifications in the control panel i get no audio hardware recognized. Is there supposed to be the ensoniq hardware listed in there? I can only see Ensoniq Midi driver in the midi section.
Thanks

Yeah I think changing to Always Monitor Input in the Project window might help.

Ok I knew as soon as I posted, I'd figure out where the Live Mode indicator was. Been
a long time since I saw 2.2 Where is the "record enable" button on each track?

The other thing to check is to make sure that you have de-selected the record enable button after recording to a track. You won't hear what you've "printed" if that track is still armed.

T
Where is the "record enable" button on each track?
From the Paris reference manual -

Note: When the Project is in Live Mix mode (page 25), this button becomes an "L" and can be used
to set a Channel to input live audio.

Yep. That's what it should look like Very Happy

You can click the "bipolar" button above the editor to get a more "conventional" waveform view (although the way it is now allows you a better perception of amplitude).

There aren't any rec arm buttons in the Editor. You rec arm from the Mixer or from your C16.

Go to the mixer and click on the blue light with an L on it. Then try to play back

I don't have PARIS in front of me. I don't remember how to get him out of live mode. Get in Standard mode

Then

record enable

record from your MPC

rewind

disable and play back

If I'm totally off base some one tell me.

Yes, those are "nulling" lights that indicate the physical fader on the C16 is not in the same position as the corresponding fader in your Mixer window. Push each one up slowly (or down as the arrow indicates) until the corresponding light goes out ("nulls") and then the fader in the window will begin to track the C16 fader's movements.

Have you got a manual? The Wiki has some in PDF form in the Reference Library section; there's none for V 2.2 yet but there's lots of general info in the 3.0 manual.

Glad to hear it! Welcome to the PARIS mob Very Happy

442s aren't worth much cash and the minimum charge for any competent tech to even take a look at it will exceed its resale value - but I'd go over it carefully yourself and look for obvious stuff. Recheck for bent or missing pins at the connectors; open it up and look carefully for anything scorched or loose - check anything mounted in a socket that can possibly be pushed in and re-seated - any visible cold solders, etc. Sometimes there's nothing to do, but other times the answer jumps out at you if you look at it carefully.

442s are a great way to get started and find out how you like the PARIS experience; if you do, at some future point you may decide to make the jump to a MEC and the additional I/O possibilities it offers.
