Hi Guys!

Greetings from a new Paris owner (yeah, there are a few of us out here),

and apologies in advance if this sounds a little newbie-ish, but I wasn't

able to find exactly the answer I was looking for in the archives.

I'm currently architecting the way in which Paris is going to fit into my
studio.
One of the things that occurred to me, is that I've got all these digital
rack
effects with S/PDIF interfaces I never use. Since Paris only has a single

S/PDIF interface, I was trying to figure out how to use multiple devices
at
the same time.

I hit upon this particular brainstorm, and was wondering if you guys could
sanity check me here:

I was lucky enough to snag a MEC with an ADAT interface, and was considering
using that for 4 discrete stereo effect auxes to those S/PDIF
devices. So far, the best way I can figure to do this is to use an Alesis

AI-4 to convert the 8 channels of ADAT I/O to 8 channels of AES. Then, I'd

have to use 4x (gack!) separate units of the Hosa CDL-313 boxes to
convert the AES feeds to S/PDIF.

This "solution" would entail 5 separate widgets for a total cost of ~$550

(not including all the cables either). Ugh, a little messy!

Can anybody think of a simpler and/or cheaper solution to accomplish this?
Or am I better off just forgetting about the S/PDIF option on these
rack effects and simply using conventional D/A/D conversion through
some of the extra audio jacks?

This will probably be a cleaner solution and more than likely more
reliable.

It will handle SPDIF signals with out the external format converter
boxes. You inly need to use the XLR to RCA adapters to make it SPDIF.

Add this cable to give you 4 ch I/O of xlr AES/EBU

Add some combination of these XLR balanced to rca unbalanced adapters.

The CDL 313 boxes are 16 bit. I've got a couple of them here and they work
very well, but if you want 24 bit word length you would need to go with 2 x
M-Audio C03 boxes per device (one for each spdif in and one for each spdif
out-they are not bidirectional like the Hosa CDL 313) and now you're talking
8 x M-Audio C03 units plus the Alesis box. So for a 24 bit signal path
you're talking 8 x $199.00 plus the Alexix box.........
soooooooo............... for $2000.00 or thereabouts, this is possible. I do
stuff like this all the time to entertain the people here so the idea really
appeals to me, but believe me, Chris Ludwigs idea is really the way to go.

Hi,
You can use Soundpals ADAT_3 which uses AES/EBU to adat and ADAT_4 which
is the oppositte.
I got both of them at ebay arounmd 50$ !!

It is what I use they are only 16 bits but anyways I only record 16 bits
inside Paris !
Don't get fooled with bits.
Rock'n'Roll lives inside 16 bits or maybe 12bits truncated ?

Doesn't the PARIS ADAT only support 20 bits?

Don't have the gear to make a comparison, but I suspect that the difference
between 16 & 20 bits is greater than the difference between 20 & 24...

Thanks Chris, I do believe you may be right. I'd initially looked at the
ADI44-DD. But that was when I first started and still believed I should
be able to find a straight ADAT --> Multi-S/PDIF conversion box. Of course,
I later found that I instead needed to go ADAT --> Multi-AES --> S/PDIF,
then never got back around to re-considering the RME. Go figure.

This is starting to creep further and further up into the $$$, though (especially
considering the routing solution alone is beginning to get as expensive as
any of the single units I was looking at hooking up).

I'm starting to wonder if the cash might rather be better spent by just grabbing
a used Digipatch, then dedicating the ADAT port for Dimitrios' Pulsar/SCOPE
scheme instead. ;)

Aha! So the CDL's *are* 16-bit after all. That's how Sweetwater lists them,
but when I visited Hosa's site they mention that they're 24-bit. I'd hoped
perhaps Hosa had upgraded them in a newer manufacturing run, but I'm afraid
what they're actually saying is simply marketing speak for, "sure, we can
handle 24-bit, and we'll even be happy to throw away those pesky 4-8 extra
bits for you." Ah well...

Yeah, I get caught up in little experiments like this too. Then I start
searching around everywhere until I finally kludge together a solution.
And by that time I've got so much effort invested in it that I just instinctively
pull out my checkbook.

Then, if I'm lucky, I stop myself to ask, "okay, now I know I *can* do this;
but the question is *should* I do this."

Erm, yeah. Maybe... (And that's on a good day when my wife's looking at
me with a certain look that clues me in that my GAS is getting the better
of me again).
