3 cards in a 32 bit magma on a g3, os 9.? to XP or W7? what benefits can i expect? Sounds like paris is becoming more usable. Suffered long enuf, time to make a move. What benefits would 64 bit offer? thanks.

That was just a tad too cryptic for me, care to elaborate? Smile

Gotcha - think of the FUDForum software we're using here as the forum software equivalent to PARIS. Balky and quirky and bound to throw you a WTF? moment now and then, but there's tons to love, and hey - the price is right. Smile

Just got a sec right now but basically:

1) XP has been solid as a rock for the last couple of years on even the most modern multicore systems thanks to Mike's reissue drivers

2) Win7 32 bit has a shorter track record but the results so far have been stellar, with user Philip reporting it runs very stable and solid using the XP drivers (you'll find the thread stickied)

3) Win7 64bit drivers: Mike's working on them. It's pretty cheeky to be trying to make stuff this astonishingly old work in a state-of-the-art modern OS, but he's had nothing but positive indicators so far. Mike came up with an elegant "double buffering" solution to work around some key issues and it works well enough that he's grafted it into the XP drivers. There is a *lot* of ingenuity being applied here, and we're quite hopeful about the outcome.

4) That looks like a good system, rather like my own. Not blazing by today's standards but compared to that G3 you're absolutely going to need seatbelts on your computer chair.

im using a expansion chassis im assuming nothing will change. I have paris 3.0. will i have to get a new response from ID or is there a workaround since its a pc? Will i be able to use asio to port out of a paris card when using a mastering suite like PEAK or similiar? when i started using the magma, i lost the ability to use the paris asio on bias peak. Dont know if its because of 3 cards or if its a expansion issue. I have been using paris on this G3 since day one of G3 availability and know nothing else. Thats been a while lol. I found my paris 3.0 disc so i may try it in the xp box and see if it will do demo mo0de.

Don't think you'll b e able to do any ASIO on the PC side. I used to run Waveburner on
my G3, then G4 867 running OS 9.2.2 However, apparently there has been some progress made on the ASIO front...

The 3.0 disc should run fine in demo mode, and ID is still issuing response codes. In fact the last time I switched - a year ago - they responded faster than any other time back in the day.

Take care

Ted

No ASIO isn't a Mac thing. I was just saying that it wasn't up and running well on PC, tho' I understand great progress has been made with it by Mike A. I could be wrong about it not being up and running for at least a 2 track program (like Wavelab). Maybe someone else who knows more can chime in...

ASIO was a Mac thing in the days of OS9 and earlier. Nowadays it's primarily PC, with OSX Macs using Core Audio instead.

There have been three total versions of ASIO for PARIS. The first shipped with PARIS and was basically not very useful - high latencies, 16 bit only, limited I/O. The second versions were written by Matt Craig in 2004 and were an improvement but still limited.

The current state of play is that Mike's got a version of the ASIO driver in alpha that has a mere 256 samples of latency and allows all MEC card inputs and outputs, albeit only at 16 bit. But it's an alpha so it's expectedly rough around the edges and certain things cause instant crashes. For example, trying to open its driver control panel, probably because that hasn't been written yet. Very Happy

Try one of the first two, depending on your needs there are those who've found them unobjectionable. If you talk nice to Mike (and promise not to complain about the rough parts) he might let you have a peek at his snappier alphas - I've used them and they were actually quite stable once I learned "what not to do".

Both Mike and I have hosting companies that "changed the rules" on us suddenly without notice. In his case I remember it really screwed up the e-commerce thing. Drop him an email at that address I gave you, he'll have you sorted out in quick order.

This is just weird; it sounds like the "Crash On Exit" bug but I was under the impression it had been killed a long time ago (like - 2004).

I think what's making it hard to help are 1) we don't really have a lot of info to go on and 2) Mike Audet couldn't sort it out??? I dunno, nobody knows the PARIS drivers better than Mike, if he's stumped the problem must be very stubborn and deep.

About the only thing I could suggest is a complete OS reinstall and then a careful reinstallation of PARIS making certain to tick off every step as I went. This has fixed even the most stubborn problems for me every time.

Dunno if you've seen this page, but although it's more relevant to the old drivers it might spark some thoughts too.

i went through it with mike for a few hours on the phone. i did a fresh install of the os on a brand new harddrive and carefully installed everything as per mikes instructions. he has sent me several sets of drivers to try to sort it out. i am not sure what is what at this point and i think mike is finished helping.mike sent me a dbug view app and i installed it and it ran for a day on 1 set of drivers but only if i ran the dbug view with it.Yesterday i got here and ID had sent me the responce code and i used it and then paris started being a POS. I think i somehow pissed mike off although i cant see how as he suddenly told me he had reached the limit of his support even though on the previous day he was offering further assistance to sort the drivers out?? I dunno. Mike has been really helpful but at this point i am not sure which drivers are which but i found a set which work without dbug view although they have the EXIT problem and sometimes lock the machine up. Since the new trouble began i have done a clean install of paris and the related files twice.????????? Someone suggested i get windows 7? Why cant xp get sorted out is my question.
