Here's the deal: I record myself in Paris alot playing my trumpet. I use
a Beyer 260 ribbon mic that was worked on by Steve Sank. He put a 77-DX
ribbon in it to make it sound more like the vintage RCA 77-DX. He also modified
my Apex 107 preamp to sound much quieter and beef it up (but not the gain).
It all sounds really good.

One of my problems with recording myself though, is I really can't just close
my eyes and play. I watch the input levels in Paris and move myself back
a little from the mic when I am going to play louder, and move closer when
I play soft and whisper. Watching the levels guides me so I not only don't
get too many overs, but gives my low level whispers more natural gain ( and
a little proximity effect to fatten the low levels).

I never used a limiter or compressor, since I have read that they pump and
breathe and inject too much unnaturalness to the sound......... but ...........I
have no experience with this so I don't really know.

I am starting to get a little tired of having to watch those levels and was
wondering if I did put a limiter or compressor on the mic, will I really
get all that unnaturalness and unwanted noise? You guys are engineers and
record a lot of people and I don't. What is your experience and opinions
with this?

Also, in searching for a decent, yet inexpensive compressor/limiter that
might fit the bill, I came across the FMR "Real Nice Compressor." They
also have a $400 mic pre that seemed like it might be real good for a ribbon
as it has a lot of gain.'

Do any of you have any experience with the Real Nice Preamp or Compressor?
They both got very nice reviews from magazines on line. I have not seen
them mentioned here before, but I could have missed it.

Thanks
