I've noticed that the power around here is a little unstable, but of course
that shouldn't be a problem for the news-server as it has a wonderous UPS
on it... ;o)

Well we just got a power glitch here an hour or so back, and when I went
to look at the server, "Uh oh!", out of action. I know the UPS does it's
job at times as, for example, last night I shut down the mains at the meter
box for a few seconds and the server kept running fine. This power glitch
today was only about a second, so I can't see why it would make a glitch...

....but between the server, the UPS, and the power here in this house, the
combination isn't happy. Something in the constant power glitches that seem
to haunt this area manages to get through this particular UPS enough to effect
the server. I'm suspicious changing any one ingredient would be enough to
fix it.

Looks like I'll be shopping for a new UPS shortly...

UPS SUX...well it did for me and i don't know why i still have the
dead one in the studio. i need direction in my life.....sigh

Make sure you get one with automatic voltage regulation and
enough range of compensation to deal with sags and spikes.

That could be your problem. We put them on the DSP processors
in our sound installs and they save a lot of service calls.

And of course, make sure there is enough current capacity.

Frankly, we should all help you buy this.

I'm pretty sure that is my problem with the current one. It's got plenty
of mumbo to do the job (it's rated at like 700 watts and I must be using

power fluctuates enough to hang the server, but not enough for the UPS to

more fussy about what it lets through. Unfortunately the software is around

it up. If I do need to buy a new one I would be happy to accept donations
though for this one off expense. Apart from anything else it will help guarantee
that we have the funds to get a good one. I imagine, given the number of
respondants already, that just $10 a peice or something would probably be
enough, but we'll wait and see if I can tweak the current one first.

Hehe, indeed. ;o) Exactly what I'm afraid of. ;o)

I already have a paypal account. I'll let you know where it is if I find
I need to go get a UPS on the weekend. Though Rick has me wondering with
all these different account types whether I have the right type for people
to pay me. Do they all do that? Surely I chose a type which allowed people
to pay me. Oh, it's so long ago, and so many brain cells have died... ;o)

have software available for download (free) on their site. I'm in if
the solution is a new one.

Yeh I checked the site already. It's some rebadged Asian thing which came
with custom software, and the guys who's badge it carried no longer do UPS's,
and I can't find anyone else who does this model. Serves me right for buying
some dodgy cheap thing. ;o)

If the solution is a new one I think I'll be going APC. There's nothing like
a decent brand.

are like 1250.00 Aus.

Holy Cow! The exchange rate is about 1.35 Aus dollars to USD,

Yeh, well there is that also. You should see the way music gear is priced.
I remember way back in the late 90's when I was looking at monitor speakers.
Event 20/20Bas's were $350 on the shelf in the US, and on the shelf in a
music store here the tag said $1799. I don't quite know why. Someone's making
a killing I expect.

I'm going to have to look into it. I'm pretty sure the old Sola brand was
Australian made, and they've apparently merged with Powerware who I beleive
are also Australian. They seem a little cheaper. I'm not going one of the
Asian imports again after the effort of this last one... unless I can get
it going with software tweaks.

Mind you I can get an APC CS 500VA for $139. Sure, it's only going to last
20 minutes, but at least it should be good enough to stop the spikes. Power's
only going to go off for longer than 20 minutes once a year anyhow.

I'll check to see what it would cost to ship APC to AUS. A good friend here
owns a UPS store and has other shipping providers as well. We've got a
CompUSA here and I've got 4 x of these unit powering my MECs , computers,
monitors, clocks, converters and anything else that would bite me if I had a
power issue.

The problem is that we're on a different voltage down here. We run 240V,
whereas you guys are on 110V, or is it 120V? Doesn't matter. Your gear wont
run down here...

....unless I was to get a 240-110 Stepdown transformer (which are about $100
I think), and you were to ship me a 110V PC power supply to put in the server,
but even then I need to run the router as well. I guess you could ship me
a 12V 1A plugpack as well.

Much as it sounds good in theory I think by the time you added up all the
extra bits like shipment, stepdown transformer and all the other bits and
peices that would be needed to cater to the voltage difference, it wouldn't
really be worth it.

I'm sure I can find something for under $200 down here...

Yah, my first thought was to zip down to Fry's and send you a
nice APC1500. That's what I use and it is super.

Spend the extra though and get both a good brand and one with AVR (automatic
voltage regulation) Let us help you pay for it,
it is the least we can do.

Tripplite is another option and while they don't tell you the aus.
price on the site, they do have a rep assigned to you all.

I can get an APC (RS?) 1500VA for $569:

Or the APC RS 1000VA for $469. That would be plenty of mumbo, but I assume
the 1500VA would keep it running for longer if power dropped out for a while.

Or we can get a Powerware 5110 1000VA for $219, which is more the price range
I was thinking. Of course I want one that works properly. AVR sounds good.
I'll check some specs when I get home.

Obviously it's not such a big deal if 20 people put in $20 each instead of
$10, as opposed to one person (me) forking out $500.

....and of course every $10 you guys put in becomes like $13 at this end.

Hi folks,
While residing in the US, I had been using UPC1250 with no problems. I don't
use the thing anymore since I've switched to 240 volts. If anyone is interested
in trading the Power Conditioner/Stabilizer for the V.3.0 authorisation (Mac),

A UPS simply replaces power when lost, it generally won't do anything
about "brown outs". You need a box that will also switch between
transformer taps to maintain proper voltage at all times... even when
"shore power" is still up and running.

Kim,

It sounds like the duration of the low power condition is too short for the
current UPS to detect. In this case, an "online" UPS may be necessary.

The difference is that an "online" unit provides power from the battery 100%
of the time compared to a "standby" unit that kicks in a power inverter when
a brown or blackout condition is detected. Online units are more expensive
though.

Yep you need an online UPS - that's what we use here at Northwestern Mutual
(I'm on the systems team) for severs in area's were power is not clean.

OK, I'll keep that in mind also.

Whether it's like you say and the outage is too quick, or whether it's like
others have suggested and the outage is not big enough to cause the UPS to
kick in (but big enough to effect the server) is still a question...

Why couldn't I just live somewhere with better mains! ;o)

Within limits. The unit's specs will tell you what the voltage
range it can correct for is. AVR works well for us, but the
fluctuations are usually within 15% or so. Again, it depends on
the unit. Consider the range of voltage correction when you pick
a unit.

One of our clients tried to run a new, rather large sound system off
one 15-amp circuit that had other stuff on the same circuit (!)
We warned them, but they didn't want to spend any more money.
One day they turned on too much stuff at once and the speaker
DSP manager lost its program file and put out a spike that blew
up all their HF drivers. 4K later, they upgraded their mains power
and we put a good UPS on the processor. No problems since

Here, if you suspect fairly large voltage drops or spikes, the power
company can often be prevailed upon to put a monitor on your line
to diagnose what is going on. I don't know if your power co.
provides this service, but it might be worth a call to find out.
It would tell you what ranges you need to correct for, and you
never know, the sparkies may find a bad local transformer.

Don,

That's a great idea about the power company. I'll give them a call tonight.
If we're lucky, as you say, they'll find a fault in the street and will be
able to fix it and we wont have to spend a dime. (not that we have have dimes
down here ;o) I've never heard of anyone getting monitoring gear put on,
but then I've never known anybody with a problem like this.

Definately worth a shot. Fixing the power is by far the best way to fix the
problem.
