Hi guys and gals,

Unfortunately, I still need my Paris rig as a multi-use computer. Maybe by
the end of the year I will be in a position to have a WinXP Paris rig stand
alone. So for now, I require to use the internet via external cable modem,
run Norton and quite a few other apps. My rig almost performs flawlessly.
P4 duo core, 1gig ram, two 80gig drives, two DVD drives, 2 EDS, Nvidia and a
400 or 500w PS (I forget) upgrade.
..
MS has just release WinXP IE 8 as a high priority update. I know we prefer
WinXP SP2 and IE7. Recommendations here have mentioned to avoid SP3 so I
have. By now the bugs may be worked out on SP3. Is anyone running XP with
SP3 and has anybody installed IE8 without any problems with their XP Paris
rig?

Thanks,
Wayne

IMHO IE 7 and IE 8 both are unstable, and I don't like either. Pages don't
load right, or at all, sometimes on multiple machines. I admin 150-ish
computers and 5 servers, plus my 6 home boxes that are on a lot (I have over
10, but not always running). I'll not be putting IE8 on the work machines
just yet, except my desktop - it gets the 'test' work done on it before I
subject users to it.

However, the recommendations I've given in the past about staying off XP SP3
has more to do with hogging RAM than anything else.

The first recommendation is to get rid of Norton in a fast major way.
You think Paris runs well now, wait till you remove Norton.

FWIW, McAfee is the new Norton. Avoid it. These days I'm running AVG free at
home and I've kicked McAfee to the curb at work and installed Kaspersky
after much testing. Way cooler app, protection rocked everything else into
the dirt and it is SO configurable it's crazy.

OK. I'll remain as is for now. My intention is to end up with a clean system
once I get my second home desktop to do all the other stuff. Thanks.

Please please please do yourself a major favor and download the free version
of one of the following:

Virtual PC 2007
Virtual Box
VMWare

Set up a virtual machine for all the non music related tasks and you can
keep the base machine squeeky clean.

and get yourself some extra RAM. VPC's are addicting and they like memory.
