Unfortunately I'm in the middle of renovations and can't access Paris - hell
I have no idea where I put the damn rig anymore

hehehehe

Now for reasons best left untouched I am considering adding PT to my arsenal
of goodies and of course I would host it on my second computer.

As I can't afford an HD rig, my options are limited to PT M-Powered,
using the M-Audio Profire Lightbridge to fly audio between the computers.

Now as Kerry rightly pointed out there is no ADAT sync port on this puppy
and according to M-Audio tech support Pro Tools M-Powered will recognise MTC
for it's transport control.

Now for the dumb Q

Paris is supposably able to generate MTC but where does it output as there
are no midi ports in Paris?

Bottom line here is if I have to jump through too many hoops to integrate PT
into my setup well Digi can go "F" themselves

Hi Don,

You'll need a hardware midi device for Paris to output it to PT.
If you put PT in the same computer as Paris (do you dare?)
then MTC can stay inside the computer and route directly to it.
Maybe....

I've seen it done with Paris and Cubase. I'm planning on it here too.

Tom

Paris should recognize any MIDI interface that is hooked up to the
computer. The word clock out from Paris could be sent to the BNC word
in on the Lightbridge to facilitate clocking. Paris will generate MTC
from the timeline I believe (it's been a while) that PT could follow.

Getting the M-Audio interface would also allow you to integrate Cubase
at some point (more useful than PT IMHO) which would get you mixing with
full PDC.

David.

If you remember this sync business has me completely befuddled so correct me
if I'm wrong

are you saying that MTC will be passed along the BNC cable?

I have Cubase2 / Nuendo2 / Reaper and Saw Studio on my second rig and they
work flawlessly with my Dakota Card but but I'm trying to integrate PT into
my setup but it looks like hoop jumping 101 will be on the agenda if I
decide to proceed

No, separate cables... BNC for word clock sync, and a MIDI cable to
transmit MTC for "position" information.

It won't be as bad as you think... just remember that there always has
to be ONE clock master for everything. Do you have a separate word
clock generator? You may want to invest in one... it will simplify
things greatly.

Okay now I'm confused...where's the midi out coming from

remember this lightbridge is supposed to replace the Dakota card which does
have midi in and out.

Are you suggesting the Dakota and Lightbridge can coexist on the same
computer and play nice together?

As I said this sync stuff is a mind fuck to me

You would use a separate midi interface for MTC if the lightbridge has
no midi i/o.

Any midi interface should work with paris for MTC, I've used midisport
usb uno's and midiman interfaces, and other soundcard midi ports with
Paris over the years. You are just connecting midi cables to the midi
interfaces on each system for the MTC sync side of things.

With MTC, you are basically locking the position/transport of one daw so
it follows the positioning of the master daw, as David said.

The midi time code will sync the positioning/timelines, the wordclock
will sync the digital audio signals so you don't get clicks/pops etc.
with multiple digital devices.

Cheers,

TC

The Dakota should work also.

The lightbridge does have midi in/out as does my Dakota card which generates
MTC internally from the ADAT sync send from Paris, The lightbridge doesn't
(as far as I know)

So now do I have to purchase something like a midisport to interface
between Paris and the Lightbridge?

My problem is not "not" understanding the basics, it's trying to put
together workarounds because Paris and the lightbridge do not have the same
digital i/o ports

Paris has SPDIF, wordclock ADAT sync and Toslink

Lightbridge has SPDIF, Wordclock Midi and Toslink

and from my understanding transport control is done via either SMPTE or MTC
and Paris can generate it but not output it directly

except via the SMPTE card - I think

The Lightbridge has MIDI I/O on the supplied breakout cable.

You would get a MIDI interface for the Paris computer and connect from
the MIDI OUT on the Paris computer to the MIDI IN on the Lightbridge.
PT would see the MTC arriving at the Lightbridge and lock to it for
"position" (via Midi Time Code). The word clock is required to keep all
SAMPLES aligned so you don't get clicks and pops during transfer.

Once you have a MIDI interface connected to Paris, you can set the ports
in the setup menu located in the project window.

PT will only see the M-Audio interface, where as Cubase et-all will see
all the interfaces... you simply tell Cubase which ASIO driver to use
and it will use the appropriate interface.

David.

So to clarify I'll need to purchase a MTC interface and a wordclock
generator as well as the lightbridge and PT

You interface the "audio" with Toslink or SPDIF

You synchronize the "position" (bar 1, beat 1 etc)using a MIDI
connection on both machines

You Synchronize the "sample rates" using the word clock connections.

It takes all three to complete the transfer IN SYNC.

An in-sync transfer is only required if you need to make multiple passes
to achieve the required track count, or, you will need to transfer back
and maintain sync after doing some work in the other software.

David.

Aside from PT and a compatible interface (like the Lightbridge)... You
*NEED* a MIDI interface for Paris. You *SHOULD* buy a wordclock
generator to save what little hair you have left... ;-)

It *should* see the USB midi driver and use the attached interface...

I thought you'd say that

I think I'll put this on hold until after the new year when I can actually
access my rigs and do some testing.

I wouldn't use a USB midi device to sync the comps, pretty sloppy timing.
This "lightbridge" unit your talking about...does it have 9 pin adat sync?

ADAT Sync is definitely tighter but I believe DOn said it didn't have
that. Don, I have been able to MIDI sync between two comps (one running
Acid/ Cubase, one Paris) using a midisport UNO on the first and a
midisport 4x4 on the Paris comp. Worked fine but definitely not sample
accurate. Depends on how lined up you need things on multiple passes.
I used it to multipass midiparts in cubase/acid and then fly them over
later. It was noticably a little loose, but to most people didn;t sound
out of sync.

Unfortunately with no 9 pin ADAT sync port I'm stuck with using a MIDI
interface to pass along MTC from Paris to control PT's transport

As I would be using this setup for mixing only I can't see how this would
have and effect on the real time transfer of audio between the two machines.

Maybe I'm wrong

Comments?

So what do you folks recommend for a MIDI interface

Absolutely nothing fancy - one or two ports as I don't do much midi
recording anymore.

Tom mentioned this near the beginning of this thread and it got me thinking
(uh oh)

What are the chances of my Dakota card and the M-Audio Lightbridge
coexisting on the same computer and (god forbid) playing nice together?

I didn't think this was possible?

I have had Paris and Nuendo running simultaneously and in sync on the
*same machine* before... so it is possible. And that was on a PII-450.

Don,

Two DAWs can work as long as there's room for all your hardware interfaces
and the irqs are sharing nicely. The Midisport is a good low budget
midi interface. 2x2 is more than enough. They probably have a
smaller one. They are USB but that will do well enough except for
sample accurate transfers. That's almost never needed here.

I personally have been using SMPTE from Paris (free from BT).
It will cost you an audio track in paris and a analog out.
This however will need to be converted to MTC with hardware.
I have been using a Midisport 8x8 in my Cubase rig to do this. There are
less
expensive devices though I'll bet.

WinXP & AMD 1900+, have internally synced an old program called Master
Tracks Pro. Much, much tighter than using external MIDI/MTC for transport
IME. However, Vegas version 1,3 & 4 all sucked bad trying this. Like, BSOD
crash bad for version 4. MT Pro was shaky, but worked most of the time and
when locked it was right on target. FWIW and probably 4 or 5 years ago.

Aaron and Kim,

Maybe there's something better about 'in the same box' with Paris?

Paris DEFINITELY sees a USB midi interface.
I was using one all the time, (and I mean "all the time") when I was using
Paris.
I was locking to Digital Betacam for post production, and Paris was the
slave...all through a Digi SMPTE slave driver....always worked.
