A fine example of why software patents are inherently questionable. Are they
patenting a new product, an actual 'invention,' or are they claiming the
ADSR envelope and a mod matrix + a computer GUI 'combines three or more signals
in a way that might be confusing to the user?' And thus everyone who makes
a soft infringes on their patent or owes a royalty to Apple. We can't tell.

Absolutely. I think it's dangerous ground to allow patents on combinations
of devices that simply create an outcome or function. I could combine
water, food coloring and a bottle and patent it as a light enhancing object,
but that's obviously ridiculous, just as Apple's claim is.

I think Korg and Roland might have issue with the GUI + computer + synth =
"invention". Since Apple didn't invent the synthesizer there are a few
estates of, and current, inventors that might have a field day with Apple
for patenting the software version as part of their system. This is
humorous, unless of course Apple somehow is granted the patent and puts a
few soft synth developers or perhaps DAW builders out of business enforcing
such a lame attempt at a "inventive" claim.

In the end, assuming this goes anywhere and Apple does anything with it, the
users are the main ones destined to pay the price, as always.

May it's time Apple and Microsoft were replaced with less desperate and more
consumer friendly organizations. :-)

Now I'm off to use my GUI + synth + computer patent-infringing gear to make
a living. Just let Apple try to stop me. I have a great recipe for Swedish
Apple pie. ;-)

Don't worry Thad. Microsoft will steal it anyway and they can just let Apple
sue them until Apple runs out of lawyer money........like the ocean breaking
on the beach. Then, once they integrate it into Windows, the hackers can
crack it and it will be freeware.

Gawd, I love Bill Gates.
