Q1: What is PARIS?
A: PARIS (Professional Audio Recording Integrated System) is a versatile,
expandable recording/mixing/processing system. The core system consists of
ENSONIQ's EDS-1000 PCI card and a cross-platform CD-ROM containing software
that runs under either the MacOS or Windows 95/NT operating systems. The
PARIS software provides an intuitive and highly responsive graphic interface
for the system's integral automated 128-track digital recorder and mixer,
complete with four-band parametric EQ, aux sends and real-time DSP effects,
including dynamics processing and high-quality reverb. PARIS supports plug-ins
for additional effects and software features with an open software architecture
which will be available to third-party developers. PARIS also supports the
use of multiple cards to further extend real-time processing power and I/O
capability.
The EDS-1000 PCI card is equipped with connectors for an expandable input/output
system and a dedicated hardware control surface. External input/output options
include the basic two-channel audio external Interface 2, the Interface 442,
and the expandable mainframe Interface MEC (Modular Expansion Chassis). The
mainframe's basic configuration provides an essential complement of analog
and digital I/O, as well as video and word-clock synchronization. The mainframe
also provides expansion slots for a family of modules designed to allow the
user to fully customize the system configuration. Add-on Modules will include
Analog I/O (XLR and TRS jacks), Digital I/O (S/P DIF and AES/EBU), ADAT Optical,
Tascam TDIF, and SMPTE Timecode units.

Q2: Who will be selling PARIS?
A: We are now developing a network of ENSONIQ Digital Systems dealers. We
are looking for dealers who are best qualified to sell and support PARIS.
The official dealer list will be announced as we get closer to the launch
date.

Q3: What are the features of the Interface 442?
A: The Interface 442 is a 1U rack-mountable enclosure which connects to the
EDS-1000 PCI card. It provides four analog inputs, four analog outputs and
one stereo digital input and output (S/PDIF), as well as an external sync
input and output and a connector for an Interface 2 module. The front panel
has eight analog signal level indicators as well as sync and sample rate
status LEDs.

Q4: What are the features of the Interface MEC?
A: The Interface MEC comes with four analog inputs, four analog outputs,
one stereo digital input and output (S/PDIF), external sync input and output
connectors, and a front panel headphone output as standard features, and
can accommodate up to nine additional expansion modules. The expansion modules
typically contain two, four or eight inputs or outputs, depending on the
function and type of connectors used on the module. For example, when XLR
connectors are required for analog outputs, there are four per module. Another
example is the ADAT interface, which will provide eight inputs and outputs
on a single module. Each EDS-1000 card can be connected to one Interface
442 or Interface MEC, providing a total of up to 20 inputs and 20 outputs
per card. The maximum system configuration will be three to four cards typically,
and is limited by the number of available PCI slots as well as CPU speed
and power.

Q5: What are the minimum computer requirements for PARIS?
A: As we get closer to the release of PARIS we will have more specific information
on computer requirements and compatibility. Based on preliminary testing
we feel that PARIS will work efficiently on a computer with a 120 MHz or
higher PowerPC or a 133 or higher Pentium. Compatible computers must have
at least one available full-size PCI slot.

Q6: What file formats does PARIS use and support?
A: PARIS supports Sound Designer II/Pro Tools, .WAV and AIFF file formats,
in addition to the special optimized native PARIS 24-bit format.

Q7: How will PARIS implement automation?
A: All standard mixer controls, including faders, panning and effect returns,
will be automated.

Q8: Will PARIS have good plug-in effects?
A: The quality of our plug-in effects is very high. The same superb effects
that are available in our new fully professional DP/Pro 24-bit Effects Processor
will be available for PARIS, and we have received inquiries from numerous
third-party plug-in developers about providing support for PARIS.

Q9: Can PARIS accept FX plug-ins?
A: We have also been contacted by many of the 3rd party plug-in manufacturers
and are working with them to ensure that there will be many plug-ins available
for PARIS as soon as possible.

Q10: Will PARIS be compatible with Intel MMX processors?
A: PARIS will be compatible with MMX processors, and we intend to provide
specific support for MMX capabilities as well as multiple processors. While
this support may not be available in the initial release, it will be implemented
as soon as possible.

Q11: How many channels can you include in a submix?
A: The submix of the current 16 channels being mixed is invisibly computed
and updated continuously while you are working, and should never take longer
than one pass to compute. Depending on the number of EDS-1000 cards in the
system, the speed of the CPU and the capabilities of the disk subsystem,
more than one 16 channel submix may be computed in real time (as opposed
to using the "invisible" submix tracks).

Q12: Will PARIS provide QuickTime support?
A: We are planning to offer support for QuickTime in PARIS, but more detailed
information is not available at this time.

Q13: Which digital sequencer software program will work with PARIS?
A: ENSONIQ has been contacted by almost every software sequencer manufacturer
on the market today regarding this subject. We believe that compatibility
is important and are developing a program which will allow other software
programs to use our hardware. At the recent Frankfurt Musikmesse, we had
meetings with several leading manufacturers including Steinberg and Emagic,
who expressed interest in adapting their products to support the PARIS hardware.

Q14: What are the MIDI capabilities of the PARIS sequencer?
A: The PARIS sequencer will allow MIDI data to be managed transparently within
the same editing environment as the audio data, and should prove to be a
viable and attractive alternative to other dedicated sequencer applications.
PARIS version 1.0 will include all commonly used MIDI sequencer features,
including support for Standard MIDI Files (SMF), sophisticated non-destructive
quantization, and both event list and "piano roll" editing of MIDI data.

Q15: How many simultaneous playback channels can PARIS have (8?, 16?, 24?)?
A: A single card system will support a minimum of 16 simultaneous real-time
playback tracks, and probably more, up to the limits of the disk subsystem,
the CPU and the cards installed. You are always working within one of the
eight 16-channel submixes.

Q16: How many inputs and outputs can each EDS-1000 card handle?
A: One EDS-1000 card can handle a maximum of 20 inputs and 20 outputs when
connected to an Interface MEC with the appropriate expansion modules installed.

Q17: How will PARIS handle dithering?
A: PARIS will be able to mix down to stereo master tracks which can be compiled
into a CD master image file suitable for use with CD mastering software.
It is possible that some of these features may be included in the PARIS application.

Q18: Can I do all my mixing and analog I/O through PARIS, without using a
mixer?
A: PARIS will have everything needed except microphone pre-amps, and we expect
to be offering them as another option in the future.
