so what's it do that the ll67, or the fairchild, or the Neve won't do? I used
to have one of these (got it somewhere around 78 or 79) but sold it for $150
I think. It was the first compressor I ever owned, so I didn't have anything
to compare it to.

You own a kick drum.....right? ;) I like the way this snags a kick better
than I like the 1176. It's just so fast. There's a contouring you can do
with it by just noodling around with the settings that keeps the attack just
right without oversquashing so that it really thumps in the mix. You can do
just a little boost and still meld with the bass guitar without needing to
cut so much bass info at 400/800 Hz.at least on the material I am working on
right now.
It's very retro and "alive" sounding. DL the demo and play around with it.
It's worth the trouble. Nice on snare and bass too.....but on kick, it
rules.

I think I used to have a stereo version of that. It had a shiny black
plastic face and a kind of beveled metal border around it. Might have
been a 165 or 166? I remember it did bass really well.

Bass is probably what it's best at, IMO. I adore what it does for my basses,
and kick directly behind that. I'm not much of a snare 'squish' dude, but if
you're into that it's good at doing that to a snare.
I find, for my tastes and how I work it to be best at lowered fundamental
instruments/sounds.

166 is the one rack space stereo thing. I see them at clubs alot Sort of
prosumerish, but still usable in my opinion. I touch overheads with mine.
I have a couple 160X's. Mono one space rack units..I use em sparingly on
Kick and Snare in to paris. Not bad on bass either.

Yeah, I had the 165, which is 2 space and older than the 166.
