I've been an AMD buyer/user for a long time. Very comfortable with DFI and
ASUS mobos and equipment. But check this out.

A hopped up best of breed Intel chip beats the daylights out of the hopped
up top of the line AMD. I mean destroys it.

Chris - is there a dual dual core option for either Intel chip yet?
I had a hard time distinguishing the X2 color bar from the Conroe 2.66, but
(correct me if I'm wrong) - it looked like it beat everything on the Thonex
2 test, even the dual DC Opteron (except 1024 samples latency).
I have to admit, as much as I've been happy with AMD, this is great news.
Compatibility has been fine with my carefully selected AMD systems, but
there aren't enough options there atm. If my Asus A8V dies, I'll probably
have to move the UAD-1 system to an Intel dual core.
Forgive my lack of research, but what is the main difference between conroe
and woodcrest, other than the server vs. desktop generalization? Audio
advantages either way? e.g. price vs. performance?
Regards,
Dedric

HI Dedric,
Yes the Woodcrest Xeon chip.
If you look at the 64k buffer part of the list it is the ivory colored
bar. It has the best score of only 53% cpu at 64k buffer amd the Conroe
and Dual Opteron 285 tied for 2nd place. The X2 4400 score was 70% at
64k buffer. The most disappointing results are from the new AMD M2
processors but I think there is 3rd party chipset issues involved with
that.
AMD has quad core Opteron CPUS in the pipeline but of course so does
Intel. Thats Quad core on the single socket and dual socket boards. But
we won't be seeing this till after Vista is out I think.

Strange,
I just got back form Comp USA to test out a Dual core Imac(20inch) with dual
boot 9Wiin /OSX, and I'm very impressed with the Windows XP performance.
Simply put, the Macs run Windows better than some PCs out on the market.
Very impressed.
As for AMD. Wow!! My last new system I assembled (April 06) was a Dual core
Opteron/939 chipset. It did not run Paris, but, it's abest for ProTools (7.1)
and Nuendo.
It lloking like Intel is about to recliam the speed game. I really don;t
knwo how AMD let Intel back into the game ??? Since the Opteron was so much
ahead of Intels offerings.
Well, the ood new for me and others is the Higher speed Opterons price will
continue to fall!! That means setting up a a fast DAW for recoridng, VSti's
will alot lighter in the wallet$$$. I'll continue down the AMD path while
the prices are dropping.
No need for me and others to et caught up in the $$ expensive speed game.
Nope..I'll wait around like the Vultures :) and make due with the good O'l
Slow Dual Core Opterons. Oh woe is me!! :)

But DJ, just think about running a dual dual Intel with UAD-1s and Powercore
cards with more than one motherboard to choose from...and no compatibility
quirks to keep you up all hours trying to resolve.
As for Macs running Windows - why would anyone pay more money for
Apple-built hardware to run Windows?
It finally comes out - Macs really just wanted to be PCs. And now they are.
And now there will be no more reason to pay Apple more for the same hardware
you can get from 100 other vendors. Oh, and Mac users will just love having
to succumb to antivirus/spam protection now.

Yeah, that's what every Mac user wants, to deal with that debacle! This
is one Mac user that won't be loading Windoz virus on my Mac.

Or better yet, to avoid computing nastiness, don't surf on your music machine
and put Debian on it. Then do this following once per day
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and you'll never have security/virus problems ever again.

I'll never forget an inciodent a few years ago. There was a radio talk show
in Austin that dealt with consumer level computer issues. Geeks were not
allowed (and 'Austin is geek country). This was back around 1999 when I was
learning to build DAWs. I was using SCSI drives but ATA 66 was on the
horizon so I called in with a question regasrding potential throughput of
ATA66 IDE drives vs SCSI. It seemed to me to be a pretty innocuous,
newbie'esque question. All of a sudden there was this loud siren going off
in the background of the phone receiver (and obviously being broadcast on
air) and I was given the radio equivalent of being driven through the
streets under the lash and then staked over an ant bed.
