Haven't seen it in person yet. The big news is the new case
construction. If it's even more rugged, great!
But I'm glad I didn't wait to get my 17", since, for now, that model
hasn't changed (except for some new drive options).
As for the 15" model's other changes, on the one hand, black around the
display could be an advantage, perhaps less distracting for graphics
work. OTOH, it looks weird on first glance since the body finish is
still metallic. They also dropped the matte option for the display,
which is my preferred option.
Dropping firewire support for the non-pro MacBook is also a surprise,
and not a good one.
So I'd have to give today's announcements a mixed reaction.
Cheers,
-Jamie

Hi Jamie,
Will also have to see how the no firewire on the mac book plays out.
Sense it does not have an express slot there will be no chance of adding one.
The 15 MBP 15 only have the 800 firewire port.
Intel is pushing them away from firewire i think for USB and for the upcoming USB3.
Virtually all of the new mid-prided and low priced PC notebooks which what the Mac Book and Mac Book pro are made do not have firewire on board.
Intel has actually made it so that on the new chip sets you would only be able to add firewire via express slot device.
Much like the internal wireless cards.
At least the 15 MBP like the many of the PC notebooks have a express slot so you can add a express firewire card.
The new LED screens are fricking cool.
Can't wait to see the new LED LCD Cinema Display/docking station they are making for the notebooks.

True. Which means I wouldn't be able to use one of those with my current
studio audio interface. But I could use it with my portable interface
which is USB.
> The 15 MBP 15 only have the 800 firewire port.
It can do firewire 400 with an adapter. But I gotta say having both
ports on my 17" MBP has been useful.

Here's my armchair quarterbacking (disclaimer, I'm not a quarterback and
I don't actually have an armchair): It can't cost that much to include
it. If I were Apple, I wouldn't make the change before USB3 is
available. I could see making the choice when they could include USB3,
but dropping FW altogether now is an odd choice.
Unless they want to push Final Cut/Motion people toward the higher
priced MBP now that the graphics are improved in the MB. A blatant
marketing decision if so.

Yep. And they also have onboard FW.

Have you seen one in person yet? The LED screen is decent on my MBP.

Hey Chris,
Speaking of Firewire, my new Dell doesn't have it. Any 'gotchas' about PCI-X
firewire cards? That's what seems the most logical giving the various other
slots that are already filling up.

Looking at the MacWorld quick review -
http://www.macworld.com/article/136063/2008/10/macbook_first _look.html?lsrc=top_1
- I noticed a very cool improvement in the MBP. The hard drive is easy
to access and easily user-upgradable. That is something I wish my
current MBP incorporated. Glad to see that change.
CNet has a pretty good description of the new trackpad/button design:
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39030092,49299367,00.htm
I'll have to try it but it sounds like a good idea. The way the trackpad
and gestures works on my current MPB is also well thought out.
Cheers,

HI Thad,
Do you mean PCI-x or PCI-e for a firewire?
This a desktop or laptop?
Here are the ones we use that seem to be compatible so far.
PCI-e cards

Yes that is very nice. But hop you never need to change or upgrade you ram. It is located underneath the keyboard.
You need to dismantle the whole laptop to get to it.

Yeah the track pad does look really slick. I'll be curious to see what new hand a wrist injuries come from using it. :)

Not there choice to make. It's Intel's choice. They see no point probably in spending time on some thing that 0.5% of the consumer/business market use.
If not including means low power and cost then they will ditch it. Of course Intel is one of the main people behind USB so who knows what their motive is.

Yes they do want the "Pro" to use the MBP and I think they want them to just use the 15' and then buy that the LED display for it to edit with so they don't need to bother with a 17" model.
Apples market growth is in the consumer world so expect to see them paying less attention to the "Pro" market. Those people only buy computers every 3 to 5 years. \
Apple would be out of business if thats the only market they had. :)

Apple is at the mercy of Intel as much as any other computer manufacturer.
If you go the local Best Buy and look at all brand new l;ow and mid priced notebooks you will that they are basically the Mac Books sans the fancy touch pad and LED screen.
Apple's computer parts like everyone else are made buy a handful of Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers.
Quanta and Foxconn being the main ones that work with Apple.
Apple has a fab plant that they got from HP to make the MB and MBP but that is for machine the snazzy cases and assembling the parts.

Not sure if I would say it's Intel's fault. Probably a smart business plan for them who ever buys their stuff.
Remember now people have to come out with USB and express card based video and audio devices to replace firewire ones.
Which people need to buy now if they want a new Apple and for that matter Dell system.
Isn't capitalism neat.. :)

Not the new ones and the ones that do are using extremely shitty ones.

I mean PCI-x on a desktop. I know, it's weird, but that's what I'm stuck with.

The MBP hard drive's not that hard to replace..
I did it to mine, (put in a 250gb) and it only took an hour...if I knew what
I was doing it would have been under half an hour..

That's good to know. Do you have have a good link for instructions to
follow?
I expect to do it eventually, either to put in a bigger drive or perhaps
a solid state drive. Won't need to do it for a while, though.
But with the newest MBP design it looks like it would take less than a
minute. With that setup, I would consider changing out the drive much
more often. For trips, for shoots, for gigs. That's a useful improvement.
Cheers,

HI Thad,
Oh ok. Its an old Dell Xeon system?
The only direct PCI-x firewire card I know of is this one.
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegro800.html
Not sure if it works well of not.
Most current 32 bit PCI firewire cards should work in the PCI-x slot.

Not 'old per se, but yes a Dell quad core Xeon system. It was cheap and the
chipset is reported to play nice with my Pulsar card. And I got a deal because
I'm an educational buyer.
I've never tried the PCI card in PCI-X thing. It just seems backwards to
me as a geek, but I probably shouldn't think that way. God knows there are
enough 32 bit PCI firewire cards out there.

Is this in express card format or a solid state version of an internal
SATA drive?
What I'm wondering about are removable solid state "drives" or flash
cards that plug directly into the express card slot. Express card media.
Here's an example I found (32GB), but I don't know if it's fast enough
for direct video recording on the laptop (camera connected via Firewire):
http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/ItemDetail.asp?ItemID=TS3 2GSSD34E-M

True, and that may be an option. The drawbacks are that external hard
drives are bulky, make noise, require connecting with cables (possible
points of failure) and are somewhat fragile for on-location use. Which
is one reason I'm curious about the current state of solid state express
card drives.
This would be used for video recording via Quicktime Pro or with
dedicated video recording/monitoring software like Scopebox. One
situation where direct laptop recording may make sense is when doing
interviews.

Dropping FW was a very bad decision IMO. I have no use for a laptop with
out FW.
