Was experimenting with different mixes from the last concert recording
I did.

Tracked straight from mixer inserts. Vocal mic was a 58 (her own mic
- my preference would have been my AT AE5400, but she had a bit of a
cold and didn't want to get germs on the main mics as she was the
opener for Kasim Sulton).

All Paris - all EDS inserts. Put NoLimit on her vocal and just
spanked the meter - voice just got fuller and ballsier the harder I
pushed it. Now I know what you guys were talking about. Final mix was
run through the Wavelab multiband.

Piano was a digital - the one thing you need to remember is that she
called me in a panic on the Tuesday before the gig because the two
guitar players she normally uses both had medical emergencies, and she
was without an accompianist.

The piano player she finally found had one day to listen to the mp3's
she sent, and 20 minutes before the doors opened to run through the
songs with her. Had never heard them before.

Damn, it's fun working with real professionals.

Anyhow, tell me what you think. A few extraneous noises, but it's a
live recording.

you back off spanking the NoLimit a bit?

Betcha that's the 58.. man, that 3k boost is a killer on those things.
Multiband limiting or de essing before no limit is probably gonna be the fix
there.

Well, de-essing would be the obvious thing, but her voice
sounds so good, I'd hate to mess with any of the freqs at ALL,
and you know how sibilance can get worse with
compression/limiting...

....just a thought.

Yeah, when it gets that ugly it's a retake or I back the comp/limit off and
do a fader ride. Still, pretty nice vocalist and kudos to the player for
swaggering up to the trough with that amount of practice time. Aren't too
many cats like that left in the world.

I like her voice A LOT... and I can't imagine that song with
a guitar or two - it's perfect for piano just the way it is; or
at least a piano-based arrangment, not guitar-based.

Paul did she write that? That's a a great song, too - I must've
listened to that clip like ten times.

She co-wrote that one with Jim Peterik.

Actually the original demo of the song I have was done on acoustic
guitar. After hearing it on piano, I realized that was the only way
that song should be heard. Maybe throw a little light percussion
in...

I emailed Jim that I'm almost ready to pony up for studio time to
re-record it with him on a real grand and her on a real studio mic...
