OK,
My talented young music slaves have convinced me we should leave the
safety of the studio once in a while and do some "shows." (I guess they
call 'em "shows" these days?)
Aside from needing a bass player and a living violinist, we also need
some kind of little PA system to rehearse with. Ideally, we'd like
something that would also work for small venues, like coffee shops, record
stores, parties, etc. The all-in-one package systems are tempting (was
looking at a Yamaha EMX212S), but I want to make sure it sounds good and has
feedback control in a small rehearsal space, etc. You know.
Ideally, we'd like to spend less than 6 or 7 hundred, but I'm pretty out
of touch with the gear world, and we'll do what we need to do.

Personally, I think yamaha consoles on the whole are under featured and =
over priced. Mackie has gone to the dogs on the whole. peavey has =
stepped up their game (just picked up a PV series 32 channel.... =
impressed thus far), and if you don't mind dealing with ethics, =
behringer makes some decent stuff for the money given that you may we be =
returning some of it / exchanging over QC issues. I have not been =
impressed with Fender pa stuff, basically since they bought out Sunn =
many years ago.=20
On the whole, all-in-one pa systems are bad because if something fails, =
you lose it all. But if you're wanting to go that direction: Soundcraft =
has the Gigrac with adequate built in power. A friend had one and tied =
it into some EV's on a stick (pole mounted 12" w/horn).. think those =
were a sx300 model. Bright, but for your description, probably just =
about right. You won't get much kick or bass in these, but sounds like =
it's going to be mostly vocals?
Have you thought about used gear? Hit the local pawn brokers and =
newspaper ads, see what's out there for the money.

Sarah Exactly "what" do you need the amplification for, besides
your voice? By what, I mean which insturmens will need to go through it.
What instruments will be in the band totally.

For an all-in-one I would look at Carvin
http://www.carvin.com/products/group.php?CID=SYS1. They are good and
very reasonable - not hi end at all, but it will get the job done.
I would agree with DJ that you need one monitor for every vocalist,
unless they are standing very close to each other and can share one.
Some of the Carvin systems have power for mains and monitors

Hey Sara,
I've been out of the live world for some time, but I'd agree with some of
the comments thus far: I stay away from all in one solutions -as noted
you're not totally out of luck if one component dies, and I'd consider used
gear. As with buying all things used you have to thing about the gear's
history -how much use has it had, and what sort of music was played through
it. This is of course especially true for speakers. Where the gears been
used seems to matter too. My repair guy tells me that cigarette smoke does
for circuits boards and electrical connections favors similar to those it
grants to our lungs. (I always thought it was just an issue with ordor -not
so apparently.)
I've listened to some of your demos and I gather you'd be playing with
more than a few players. So, I'd also agree that some sort of monitor
system would probably be helpful. However, I would note that our trio, if
the club was small enough and the crowd noise was low enough, could often
play without monitors. Of course those are two big if's that can change
pretty quickly. If I was going to go out again I'd really be looking at
some sort of in-ear system. Wedges can certainly work, but feedback can be
a real issue. Another thing you might consider is a wireless mic system. I
say this not because I'm familiar with them, but I AM familiar with running
mic cables ...and coiling them, and storing them, and cleaning them, and
color coding them, and tripping over them, and hiding them (to make the
stage look less cluttered.) Maybe someone will chime in and correct me that
wireless system have sonic or setup problems that make "wired" mics a better
choice. Just a thought.
Gear aside, it sounds like playing out may be a new thing for you? If
so, even if you're playing through the most basic of setups -its an absolute
gas.

bass playing through that very amp, just last Saturday:

which happens to showcase the one point, in two hours of performance, where
not only the singer forgets the words, but the guitar player and I drop a
beat.
I'm proud. And you see the shiny forehead where hair was last time you saw
me.
(there are two other videos posted there, too, but they are from a video
camera and the sound and video are unaccountably about a second off.)
