IIRC, Fletcher had a hand in the design of the NV, so they're
effectively ALL Merc Editions.
I have a "2-NV", and sound-wise, I can give you my opinion, FWIW,
compared to some of the ones you mention:
>1 UA LA610
The thing I keep hearing about UA pres is that they're "dark" -
the NV is not dark... it's warm, and with a nice high end, but
not hyped up there. if you select the "load" button to unload
the Transformers, then it gives you a slight high end boost, but
adds a bit of distortion (not a ont, depends on the mic, too...
try that with a TLM-103 & you probably won't like it, try it
with mellower condensor or a dynamic, & it could be just the
ticket).
>2 x API 512c
I haven't a/b'ed these, but I'd say the API's are probably a
little "faster" - not that the NV is a slow, mushy preamp, but
the attack doesn't come across as fast as the API stuff, I'd
also say the API's are a bit more midrangey.
>GT Vipre
Can't tell you, never heard one.
>Avalon 737sp
Both can be described as "warm" preamps, and they both have x-
formers in them, but sound-wise they're different enough to
where you wouldn't be duplicating something you already have
if you got the NV.

Yes, it's phat phat phat. Quite an amazing plugin.
Sorry, it's called the SVX, not SVT.

If you take a good DI to begin with, this is the cat's meow IMO.
Cheers,

For nearly as much as you can buy an actual Ampeg amp for, it
had BETTER be a good plugin!

Yes, but I've got a U5 also. Actually, everything here has a di on it, so I could track a bass sextet, no problem!
I think I'll keep the 737, get the Babyface mod and use it for mixing to run key mono channels back through for extra warmth and eq.
I'd still love to check out the Great River though, I think that would cover all my preamp needs for years to come.
Cheers,
TC

I sold my original "white" Great River MP-2MH, and I regret it. Awesome
preamp, and they've stopped making it for a while. They claim they'll
reintroduce it with the NV-style controls, but we'll see.
I have an NV now, and it kills on everything. Great River makes awesome
gear. The EQ is also excellent.
