OK,

My talented young music slaves have convinced me we should leave the
safety of the studio once in a while and do some "shows." (I guess they
call 'em "shows" these days?)

Aside from needing a bass player and a living violinist, we also need
some kind of little PA system to rehearse with. Ideally, we'd like
something that would also work for small venues, like coffee shops, record
stores, parties, etc. The all-in-one package systems are tempting (was
looking at a Yamaha EMX212S), but I want to make sure it sounds good and has
feedback control in a small rehearsal space, etc. You know.

Ideally, we'd like to spend less than 6 or 7 hundred, but I'm pretty out
of touch with the gear world, and we'll do what we need to do.

Thanks,

Sarah

Oh......so you're wanting a PA system that will allow everyone else to hear
what you're playing........but you? You gotta have wedges or in ears, or
both. Seriously Sarah. there is nothing worse (at least IMHO) than getting
up on stage for a gig (show..what's a show??....are you guys going to
flash??? ;o) and not being able to hear yourself and/or each other. I'm
totally obsessed with this........crazed I tell you.......absolutely gotta'
have it, or I'll die.

Sarah Exactly "what" do you need the amplification for, besides
your voice? By what, I mean which insturmens will need to go through it.
What instruments will be in the band totally.

For an all-in-one I would look at Carvin
http://www.carvin.com/products/group.php?CID=SYS1. They are good and
very reasonable - not hi end at all, but it will get the job done.

I would agree with DJ that you need one monitor for every vocalist,
unless they are standing very close to each other and can share one.
Some of the Carvin systems have power for mains and monitors

Hey Sara,
I've been out of the live world for some time, but I'd agree with some of
the comments thus far: I stay away from all in one solutions -as noted
you're not totally out of luck if one component dies, and I'd consider used
gear. As with buying all things used you have to thing about the gear's
history -how much use has it had, and what sort of music was played through
it. This is of course especially true for speakers. Where the gears been
used seems to matter too. My repair guy tells me that cigarette smoke does
for circuits boards and electrical connections favors similar to those it
grants to our lungs. (I always thought it was just an issue with ordor -not
so apparently.)
I've listened to some of your demos and I gather you'd be playing with
more than a few players. So, I'd also agree that some sort of monitor
system would probably be helpful. However, I would note that our trio, if
the club was small enough and the crowd noise was low enough, could often
play without monitors. Of course those are two big if's that can change
pretty quickly. If I was going to go out again I'd really be looking at
some sort of in-ear system. Wedges can certainly work, but feedback can be
a real issue. Another thing you might consider is a wireless mic system. I
say this not because I'm familiar with them, but I AM familiar with running
mic cables ...and coiling them, and storing them, and cleaning them, and
color coding them, and tripping over them, and hiding them (to make the
stage look less cluttered.) Maybe someone will chime in and correct me that
wireless system have sonic or setup problems that make "wired" mics a better
choice. Just a thought.
Gear aside, it sounds like playing out may be a new thing for you? If
so, even if you're playing through the most basic of setups -its an absolute
gas.
Cheers, MR

If you were closer to Colorado I'd come play violin with you!

Good luck with the PA search. If it's just for vocals you can probably
get by with that budget.

yeah, and I'd play bass and sing backup!

Folks around here with long memories might remember that I tend to the dirt
cheap end of things. I now live by Craigslist. I picked up a 30 watt Roland
monitor the other day that has an xlr in as well as three channels of line
and instrument in, and the other day I had two keyboards going through it,
playing bass on one, and it sounded stunning.

I do a duo thing with a singing guitar player, and we both have Ibanez amps
(did you even know they made them? I didn't until I went to the local guitar
shop to check out cheap Fender bass amps) -- I have a bass amp and the other
guy has a guitar amp (with an xlr in) which he sings and plays through. I
have a tiny mixer which I use to put my vocals as well as bass through mine.
Everyone in a small cafe we play in says it sounds great. No monitors needed
- we just set up with the amps somewhat behind us. On the lastest of these
gigs I used my new monitor instead of the mixer, and it sounded even better.

Both these Ibanez amps were under $200. Astounding.

Well, come on guys . . move to Portland. It'll be a nice tropical island
off the coast of Oregon in a few years. :)

And thanks everyone for the advice on this. Our lovely and talented lead
guitarist works in a local music store, so we'll probably go with whatever
he can get us the best deal on.

ok, Jamie, by no popular demand whatsoever, here is an example of that very
bass playing through that very amp, just last Saturday:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=K6NKYdwhE90

which happens to showcase the one point, in two hours of performance, where
not only the singer forgets the words, but the guitar player and I drop a
beat.

I'm proud. And you see the shiny forehead where hair was last time you saw
me.

(there are two other videos posted there, too, but they are from a video
camera and the sound and video are unaccountably about a second off.)

Cool. :) What is that? Looks like a relative of that Paul McCartney type
thang. Love that song, by the way.
