Hey guys, I need some major help here. Recently one of my audio drives crashed.
I had not experienced any difficulties with this drive. I was importing new
files to an existing project. All went well with this. Once I started to
play the project, I received a "system overload" error...never saw that before,
but the project had a huge amount of files, so I figured I'd just restart
Paris and remove the unneeded files.
Upon restarting Paris, the system froze and I rebooted. Upon rebooting, I
received a notification that my audio drive had to be defragged. I did notice
that there was a limited amount of space on the drive, which I felt might
be a contributing factor. Once I started the defrag process, the performance
slowed to a snail’s pace and then I received a message that the defrag process
could not continue and the system froze. Upon a reboot, I was now told that
the audio drive had errors. Even though I back-up religiously, there is always
new data that may get missed. after several reboots. I was able to get into
the drive and copy the few files that had not been backed up.
A bigger problem arose today. When I booted up, I forgot that the failed
audio drive was still inline. Despite opening yesterday, I heard several
clicks and then received the Blue Screen" message, (paraphrasing here) "A
childlike device was connected to your PCI..." I have seen that message some
years ago and it is typically very bad news. Now it seems My "system" drive
no longer boots...full crash, though the problem I had was initially with
the audio drive failing. At startup, I'm receiving "Insert Boot Disc" messages.
I'm hoping that I do not have to reformat the "system" drive.
Any and all assistance greatly appreciated!
Oh Specs:
ASUS motherboard running Windows 98SE

How old is your system? Is it time to change the battery that's feeding the
bios alive? Normally, the life of the battery is 4-5 years. If you have some
partition utilities that can start the machine in Dos-mode, you can see if
the boot-partition is lost. As I understand, you have not a Ghost copy that
can save your day if you have trouble with booting. If it's just that the
partition will not start, you can try a repair install with the original
CD, if it's WinXP you're using.
Hope there's something to use here and good luck.

Hi Erilio, thanks for your response. I spoke with Chris Ludwig (always willing
to assist the needy :), and it seems my OS drive was a bit confused after
I removed the audio drive from the configuartion. I removed the jumper designating
"master/Slave" and was able to boot the OS drive again.
New problem though. I opened Nero to do some critical back-ups and it says
my Win-ASPI file is now missing. I am a bit confused by this...it removed
CD drive icon as well. Any thoughts?

Here you can download the ASPI driver:
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/scsi_soft/ASPI/ASPI-4.7 0/
Hope this will help. If not, try to reinstall or update Nero. I believe Nero
install it's own driver.

This sounds like an old Roxio EZCD creator problem...

Hey Dave, I did have one of the old Roxio players...noticed it still existed
in my hardware profile, so I removed it. Still don't see any sign of a CD/DVD
drive when I boot up. I had this problem a number of years ago and can't
recall the sollution. I'm gonna look back at my NG posts to see what i can
find.

Are they both on the same IDE bus? If so, I'd pull those drives and put them
in another computer to make sure it isn't your mobo IDE contoller.

Hey AA! Sorry...it seems I was not clear in my response about Roxio. The physical
drive has long since been removed. System has HD primary, slave and 1 CD/DVD
burner. I just noticed that Roxio was still listed under hardware profiles
listings so I removed it. Reboot ans still no go on the system seeing a
CD/DVD drive. When I try to launch Nero, I get the following message.
"The Win-ASPI file '?.?' cannot be found, therefore you can currently select
only image recorders.
This missing file is one of the Windows 95/98/ME files. Please fix the problen
then restart Nero.
(Error 12 Init failed)"
Does this help any?

Try to take the powercable off the CD drive inside the computer when it's
shut down. Start up-shut down the system and set the powercable back, to see
what'happening. If the CD drive will not show up now, it seems to be
corrupt. They cost not much now a days. I believe about 50$.

Seems I've learned a few things from this "self induced" circumstance. I think
this all was primarily caused because the audio drive was full to capacity.
My problem started there and then worsened because I was trying to scandisk
a drive with no space which then snowballed.
Question for any of the "ole fogies" like myself using Win98se. What, if
anything works for Ghosting the drive?

Always leave at least 25% of the drive free for best performance.
