Dj, just stop! That Apple software will seep in to your brain and corrode
it; )
I'll first say I hardly use iTunes, but I do use it on occasion. I'll point
out some things that may or may not be obvious. The price is right! It
will do encoding and audio file format conversion. You can create play list
and organize you music for quick access, and you can also burn audio CDs
with it.
I've used it to dj weddings, parties and camping trips. A true story. I
was at a wedding doing video and the bride was literally crying at her wedding
because, the dj the company sent out didn't bring the bride and father song
he was supposed to. I used the dj's windows laptop and installed iTunes,
down loaded the song and saved the day. I guess I could have used something
else, but it was a long time ago and iTunes worked.
I've used it to search an artist content to find a song when I didn't know
the song title, by playing the snippets. I've listen to a new records to
get a sampling of what's on it before I buy it. Some times I'll check out
movie trailers. Some times, I actually use it to listen to my music while
I'm on the tube. Just drop you CDs in and hit import. You can also do drag
and drop. I also use it to listen to the net radio shows while I work.
There is a lot of cool stuff on iTunes that is free. The thing I find coolest
about it is the Pod casts. Check it out, if you go to the store and click
on podcasts, there is a bunch of categories. select a category and pick
some thing your interested in and subscribe. It will down load the pod casts.
It is mostly audio and some videos. There are a lot of radio shows, instructional
videos. There is all kinds of stuff, like real-estate, investment, business,
comedy, music, motivational speaking, news, learning video production, cooking
to learning spanish. The best part is most of it is free.
There is a lot there. Have fun with it.

I should have mentioned that you don't have to subscribe to the podcasts,
if you just want to listen or watch one of them, just click on them one at
a time. If it's video, double click on the video to open a larger screen.
There are PhotoShop quick tips video podcasts there. You can also create
your own podcasts and up load them.
There is one screwy thing about itunes. If you add original music that has
no meta info, iTunes will try to figure out what it is based on song length
or something, and it will sometimes give it a wrong name. So you kind of
have to watch it, and correct the name if it does that.

Aaaaa!! I hate when I do that . . . What I was about to say, before I
accidentally sent that empty message was: Yeah, I think iTunes is a lot of
fun, and I don't even have an iPod, or any other such player. I've added a
lot of interesting things to my collection from there, but I also think it's
fun just to browse the iTunes store.
Sarah (a fellow curmudgeon)
PS: and don't forget . . . "Wayward" by Sarahtonin, my favorite band, is
now available on iTunes. :D

itunes is great. In a pinch, it great for a "quicky" mastering app for listen
backs for the artist and record company. Just adding a pinch of their eq
will usually do the trick..
For the last 3 years, Itunes has been our studio standard MP3,wav file player.
BUT..Ms new Media Player 11 is great as well. The search function is stellar,
as is the playback engine.

Allen, I'm sure you know this, but for those who don't, you can switch the
encoding type and quality in Preferences. There is AAC, AIFF, WAV, Apple
Lossless, and of corse MP3.

Umm, before we go down the road of extreme assumptions that Vista is a
bloated waste of bits and bytes (or rather for any PC users interested):
http://www.rainrecording.com/vista/performance
Scroll down for the graph. Cubase 4 was used. Pretty big jump in plugin
count with Vista over XP32. Vista 64 and 32 will be the same as Cubase 4 (I
believe) is still a 32-bit app.
Hard to say how reliable this report is, but no reason to doubt it. I'm not
an early OS adopter, but at least this is rather encouraging. Maybe then we
can put an OSX version of Cubase 4 against a Vista version and see which OS
is bloated the most instead of subjectively guessing. ;-)
Not exactly what I call requiring 8 cores just to open. :-)
BTW - I had iTunes running on one PC today playing some Elgar and Win Media
Player 11 on the laptop with some Dvorak - one screen on each side. They
cancelled each other out to absolute silence. Cool. Dvorak and Elgar
weren't too happy about it though.

Cubase SX was ported to the Mac as I understand it. so I doubt it would be
a fair contest, besides Cubase isn't the only game in town. If Steinberg
were to do a ground up rewrite and optimized it for the Mac, then we might
have a fair contest.
Vista is such a blatant rip off of Mac OSX look and feel it's Pathetic!

And here for a second, I thought you were talking about that dumb-ass John

Sigh. You'll never learn to appreciate anything that isn't a Mac will you?
Okay.... so we'll pull up the same tracks and plugins in Logic (Mac) and
Nuendo (PC)....or better yet, I won't bother since you will just say what a
ripoff of OSX Vista is. Not that a Fischer Price-grey semi-translucent GUI
vs. a black translucent GUI has anything to do with getting work done with a
DAW, which was the point of my post to begin with.... That and dispelling a
bit of FUD about Vista in case other users are considering it to run Cubase
or Nuendo with at some point.
> Vista is such a blatant rip off of Mac OSX look and feel it's Pathetic!
Again? Well.... the obvious answer for you is .... don't use it! Please,
enjoy OSX! We know you hate PCs/Windows already.

Dedric,
And your trying to tout Vista, which is a blatant rip off of Mac OSX, but
then again, what's new? Just remember, the "new" features your seeing in
Vista have been in Mac OSX as far back as six years ago.
Have you payed attention to how big the Vista install is? I'd say it's Bloat!
Hey you want to keep supporting an unethical monopolistic company that steals
every thing they can get their hands on that's up to you. There is an alternative.
I'll go with the innovator, the originator, not the copycat.

No James, I was showing that Vista actually runs more plugins on Cubase 4
than WinXP in early tests, which
can be of interest to anyone considering upgrading from XP to Vista, and use
it for actually getting music and audio
work done.
OS's aren't a political statement for me. They are just a means to an end.
The post about Cubase 4 performance was just useful info for PC users.
Anything wrong with that?

Other than the DRM and the fact that you're locked into their hardware, it's
not bad. Which is kind of like the famous, 'Other than, Mrs. Lincoln, how
was the show?'
For higher quality audio, check out FLAC.

What's your take on the idea that DRM is being foisted on all online stores
by the
respective rights holders/publishers?
FLAC is very good. If anyone's on Mac, Amadeus will play FLAC files...

Well, my main take on it is that I don't care, I simply will not buy things
in a format that treats me like I'm a criminal. My secondary take on it is
that Esteban Jobs is wicked smart and managed to brow beat the record labels
into using his store precisely because of the DRM it had. Now that he's cornered
the market he's campaigning for the removal of the DRM because, surprise,
customers don't like it.
I'm also quite sure that some day in the not too distant future when you
buy a car you'll have to sign and EULA that says, 'This 'motor vehicle' is
licensed, not sold, to you . . .'
BTW I'm putting my money where my mouth is on this one. I'm trying to convince
the Mold Monkies to release our upcoming second CD as both .ogg and .flac
files into the file sharing universe. I'm hoping to include a note pointing
people to our web site and saying only that if they like our music it would
be really cool if they would buy a sticker or a T-Shirt or pick up my bar
tab some night. I haven't completely convinced the guys, I don't write songs
for this band so it's their copyright not mine, but I'm getting closer.

So here we go again. Steve Jobs is the bad guy??? He went and beat up the
poor record companies and made them open up their libraries to Apple. Is
that the way it was? I can't believe that some people will stand right in
front of the truth and deny it.
The record companies have been pushing such crap music for the last 15 years
that they were in trouble. With the advent of MP3s and the increased use
of personal computers, the record companies could no longer maintain control
of their music. With P2P file sharing, and the huge salaries they were paying
the pimps to run the record companies, and the crap artists they signed,
they were losing revenue.
Steve Jobs came to them with a good BUSINESS MODEL/PLAN! It was a great
deal for the record companies. Apple pays them on average, $0.85 per song!
Apple had to set up the whole infrastructure and maintain the system out
of pocket. Many of the songs are remastered, and Apple has the task of encoding
all of the songs.
The reason the record companies signed with Apple is not because Steve Jobs
brow beat them. They signed because it was a good deal and because they
were on their asses! Record companies were mismanaged and were going out
of business, and were being restructured at that time.
Steve Jobs business plan worked, and has help save the record industry.
In order to get them to go for the plan, Apple had to agree to limit the
number of copies a user can have on a number of machines. It is a reasonable
number of copies! I believe it six. Unlike MS/Rapsody, where as soon as
you stop paying MS, the music stops being playable. At least you get to
keep what you buy with iTunes, unlike MS's DRM bullshit!.
The record companies are doing fine now, and now the greedy bastards want
more. They are trying to force Apple to raise prices. Jobs would like to
see them relax and open the market up more by dropping the DRM. The Pay
to play model sucks for consumers. It's MS's pay to play DRM that Apple
is fighting against. Yet you blame Apple, and accuse them of the pay of
play model.
Look at the record companies and the lock they have on music distribution
and Air play. Apple has tried to help artist and independent record labels
to get their product out there to the public. Apple has given the public
a place to buy music, a lot of music at a reasonable price. Apple doesn't
force you to buy the whole record to get one good song.
The greedy entitled record companies have tried to screw the artists and
musicians out of their fair share. They are trying to squeeze everybody
they and their greasy lawyers can. Look at how many people the record companies
and the RIAA have sued! They have their lobby group the RIAA which is a
gang of thug lawyers that pushes everybody around. Impoverished kids and
single moms! They don't care, pay up or else! Slime!
MS, look at the things they've done. They have stolen from Apple, netscape,
Sun, the list goes on, and the list is long. Look at how much they have
taken. They steal, then they turn around and prosecute people that copy
their software, when much of it was stolen by them. How many times have
you heard of Apple having people prosecuted?
Yep, it's Apple that is evil, and it's Steve Jobs that is the bad guy. It's
Jobs that wants to take your freedoms away, not Gates and his Pay to Play
model.
Get a clue!

Good heavens, James, did you read my post? I said I won't buy _any_ format
that restricts my freedoms. Not MSoft, not Apple, not anyone. Trust me, I
despise Microsoft a great deal more than you do, because I have to deal with
their hideous, bloated software all the time.
Lastly, Steve Jobs is a billionaire executive in charge of a corporation
with an $80 billion market cap. He's is specifically tasked with making as
much money for Apple shareholders as he can, in other words to be greedy.
That's his job. He doesn't care about you or me or small record labels or
artists one bit more than Steve Ballmer does.

Yes of course Apple is in business to make money. However, if what you are
saying is so true, then why did he open up iTunes music store to artists,
and independent record labels? Why take up time and space featuring and
spotlighting unsigned artists. I think he is trying to help the little guy
out. How much money and effort have the major labels and MS put out and
done to help the little guy?
Give the guy a little credit.

That one dollar a year CEO salary sure is greedy. I guess you'll say that
his salary is just for appearances. So how many CEOs take one dollar a year
for their salary? How about taking one dollar for ten years? I'd like to
have seen Gates take one dollar a year for ten years. I guess it will always
be some kind of wrong reasoning and a jab.

The $1 salary is a publicity stunt. He has options worth well over half a

I don't believe he has exercised his options yet. The company also bought
a 45 million dollar gulf stream for him to use for business. He doesn't
own the jet the company does. What did Gates and Balmer make last year?

I'm going to make a semi-educated wild guess that SJ's reason for this is
either some tax shelter
advantage, and/or the deal he cut with the board when signing on with Apple
this time - $1 salary
in exchange for stock options, etc worth much more. The $1 salary is likely
there so he is listed
as an employee rather than volunteer. I seriously doubt there was any other
reason
than the pure legality and financial advantages to him and the company. I
seriously doubt his salary
would impact the company's bottom line enough to be an act of charity. And
though it could
be a publicity stunt, that seems less than likely as well.
Comparing salaries isn't a way to evaluate greed or charity.
Gates and others have contributed a lot to education and other charities -
don't know about SJ.
I'm not impressed by extreme wealth, but even so, I think it's a bit
difficult to judge either Bill or Steve's
motivations from a sizable distance.
There are just too many examples of excessive salaries, stock options and
personal wealth in many
industries to point fingers in any one direction.

Dedric

I don't know and it has no more to do with the question than how much I made
last year. As the CEO of a publicly traded company it's his _job_ to do everything
legally possible to maximize profits or, in other words, to be greedy. If
he's not being greedy then he's not doing his job. And, from the standpoint
of shareholder value he has been a magnificent success.
