OK guys, I just have to ask this. The 02R was a painfully bad sounding mixer.
Ditto the 01V. One of my best buddies in the DSP programming business and
I once listened to a bunch of different digital mixers at the Frankfurt Messe.
Yamaha, Korg, Tascam and a few others, all in the high end project/low end
commercial studio range. We just took a CD around and listened through headphones.
The EQs were the personification of bad digital EQ--might look good in the
textbook but it sounded awful. The compressors were decent, no character
but a fair degree of control. The reverbs sounded as digital as pretty much
anything I've ever heard.

So, does the DM2K sound _completely_ different than their previous digital
gear?

Yes, the current crop of mixers are not the same as the older stuff.
All the newer units are based on the R&D that was done for the PM1D...
comparing the DM2K mic pre to an O2R mic pre is like comparing a
Millenia to a Peavey....

Yes. Completely.. But, it does not imprint a sonic color like the Sony Digital
mixers (DMX-1000/Oxford).. They were programmed to give a color.

OK, the enthusiasm for the board makes a little more sense. I'd literally
pass on an 02R if it were offered to me for free.

I hear you... sonically the O2R was VERY lackluster, I wouldn't use
one either. The new audio circuitry, the remote layer, and all the
monitoring and control functions make the DM2K a pleasure to use. I
was actually surprised to find that my rough monitor mixes through the
DM sounded better than the same rough mixes summed within Nuendo.
