I assume you're keeping the cost down purposely. Celeron will be slower, get
2 GB of RAM on it, and stay away from Vista anything... go WinXP.XP home for
well, home use and Pro if you need to join a domain. For basic house/small
biz you should be good for 2~3 years. Oh, get a DVD instead of CD because so
many things are going to start shipping their installers on DVD now/future.
Besides, for the price difference these days it makes zero sense to limit
yourself over $30-$40 between the two options.
No gaming, video or audio production for this puppy, but it'll do the above
well enough. Don't buy into the demoware crap Dell loads on it with McAfee
or Norton. Instead use AVG for AntiVirus, Zone Alarm for a free firewall and
Microsoft Windows Defender for Anti Spyware. If it doesn't ship with
internet explorer version 7, get the free upgrade to that at microsoft.com
and make sure you install Microsoft Update at the same place (or more
directly, at update.microsoft.com).

It's a charity thing for my teenager's youth room at church. They have
NO money and want to do Power Point for lyrics and that sort of
thing. A dual head vid card would be a nice thing, but anything is
better than what they have, as long as it doesn't break. Being that it will
be paid for by a donor who has little money themselves, cheap is really
important. I just want to avoid it if it is a hand grenade...
BTW, I could not for the life of me figger out how to disable AVG Internet
Security! I liked the product, but I had to connect to a DSP box that
uses static IP addressing and antivirus programs almost always won't
let you do that. Being that I was offline, and only using the box, I
needed to disable AVG and could not find out how to do so. Ideas?
I am trying the demo of Eset Nod32 at the moment, and it is easy
to disable, runs fast and seems to slow down other app less than the
others I have tried. Do you like that as well as AVG?

Sounds like you got a demo, not a free version. I.S. is not free, only the
AV. Firewall should come from Zone Alarm. Anti Spyware from Microsoft. Make
sure you get AVG Free from http://free.grisoft.com and uninstall anything
else you have.

free version. Be sure to read the EULA but it sounds like a non profit

find a work on how to disable the app?

There's menues in XP, with different things to do popping up, when
using a rightclick on the mouse. Have you tried it on the antivirus
icon down at the right corner? Haven't used AVG but have used a lot of
antivirus programs up against the years in XP and all had a rightclick
menu, as far as I remember.

A very savy IT guy I know recommends Nod32. It uses a different approach
to anti virus detection. I believe it looks for behavior that would
indicate presence of a virus.

First place I looked. No disable. Spent quite a while, even read the
manual, and no disable I could find..

Hit control+alt+delete. That's windows task manager. Go to the processes
tab. Find:
avgamsvr.exe
avgcc.exe
avgemc.eve
avgupsvc.exe
End process those, and avg should be off. Restart AVG from the all programs
menu. That being said, I've never had it interfere with operation (my
serious recording pc's never touch the net except for updates if that is
necessary) on my net boxes, so I've had no need to kill it. However, if
you're happy with NOD, stay the course.

Thanks. I spoke with the DSP manufacturer and indeed, AVG does
interfere with their product. Once I uninstalled it, all was fine.
We wish that manufacturer would go to DHCP like the rest of the
universe, but noooo...
So far NOD is doing well.

It was a musician friend of mine that said it was the only
antivirusprogram that didn't interfere with any of his programs some
years ago. He is also a good programmer and knows really well what
he's talking about. Some years ago he was involved in great problems
with Symantec Antivirus products and his Nuendo software, so he
tested different antivirus products and ended up with Avast. Me too
and most of my family have now used it for years with it's problemfree
behavings with our programs.
