Hey all - Rick brought up the issue of "who the development rig was going to be destined for" over in this thread. Since the circumstances have changed significantly since then and there's no remaining need to keep things under my hat I thought I'd take a sec and explain what that was/is about - and why that hasn't turned into a formal reality - or at least not yet.
Back at the time I asked, we didn't seem to have a visible game plan regarding drivers, so I decided to tackle finding out what would be involved and who might help (I had no inkling at the time that Mike was quietly gearing up to tackle the drivers himself - nor did I have any idea of how well he'd succeed).
So I set out on a hunt for driver developers. I talked to quite a few, including some of the bigger names in the business, and I got some great help and cooperation. To make a long story short, during that process someone gave me the cel number of the head of Creative's driver division and suggested that it might be a very good time to present our situation to them. I called and we had a good discussion (which I was asked to keep under my hat at the time) about the possibility of Creative's driver labs supporting a PARIS driver initiative. It was important to be certain we could provide a development rig to Creative if needed.
Then Mike started into the driver work, and when I saw how serious he was about getting this done, it was obvious there was no need for external driver development. The community had already solved its own problem.
The second potential destination for a development rig was - and IMHO still should be - the Reaper folks. I contacted them privately last summer in pursuit of PARIS/Reaper convergence. I got no direct response, but I'd rather expected that they'd prefer to be contacted through the Reaper community anyway, which is in fact how we got the PAF extension recently. I've put the more ambitious steps on hold until the ASIO drivers are further along (and they are indeed ambitious steps), so the question of a PARIS rig to support this development may well be raised again in the summer.
Just a FYI in case anyone was interested!
