Back in 98, I was thinking about getting a 480L. Stephen chimed in and
posted to the NG that he had one for me, with ullet holes. He had been using
it for target practice and it was subsequently being used as a doorstop. He
recommended Quantec. I subsequently bought a Yardstick and have been very
happy with it but I've always wanted one of the original QRS units but have
been hesitant to buy one due to the age of the units and not knowing wo did
the maintenance. Sort of like the old Roland R-880, once it's toast, it's
likely to remain toast. I would imagine that Stephen took good care of his
unit and I'm thinking that if I don't have his QRS I might die. It's not up
for auction yet. I don't even want to think about the Helios console because
I know I can't possibly afford it.

In the meantime, I need a pair of Horrortones

;o)

First item on the list... Midas Recording Console. I thought it was a
Midas, not a Helios...

Deej,

After mixing for years on various pairs of Horrortones, you don't need or
want them, trust me on this.

Only if you have a set of Urei Time-Aligns up in the soffits.

Oh, and then you have to EQ the mains with a pair of White
Graphics in a curve that looks like this...
- -
--- --- --- --- ---
--- --- --- --- ---
--- -

.... and if you're gonna go that far, then make sure your
recording room has walls made completely of Hemholz resonators,
but you also have a 16'x9' jesso-coated trapezoidal echo
chamber.

Then you'll be rockin' 70's-style!

lol

More Stephen Stories

Way back when he used to call me once a month or so (who would have thought),
in the first days of the NG...

We were talking about oberheim stuff, and I was recalling how much I liked
this oberheim drum machine I used to use 'back in the 80s' because it was
so easy to program, had decent sounds for electronic music and 8 outs. He
said, yeah it's a DMX, I have one if you want it. I never took him up on
it. Lo and behold there it is on the equipment list.

I loved that box too.

Little known fact:
The DMX (and DX) had each sound burned to a PROM chip and after it was out
for a few months a small company started that offered alternate samples available
on chips the user could swap (I think they also offer Linndrum chips). I
picked up some of the chips offered. The company went on to become Digidesign.

The DMX came with a killer snare sample.

Speaking of EPROM drum sample chips, ever use the Wendel Jr.?
Those worked pretty well, actually!

Yup, this NG was a really odd (in a good way) place a long, long time ago.
You're talking about even before I was involved, but I think I got a taste.
I post a question, lil' ol' me, and get an answer from SSC and/or Edmund,
and then Jason Miles tells what and idiot I am and how many Grammy winning
records he's worked on. Lotta fun, them days.
