Soon you will be able to run Windows applications on Mac OSX without Windows.
The day Apple does this it will change a lot of things.

Jeremy White, President & CEO of CodeWeavers talks about it on the Tech Night
Owl Live Pod cast July 13th.

I've been watching this as well as Parallels. Key things for me are:
1) Will it run the Delorme GPS/Mapping software?
2) Will it run the Adobe stuff, like GoLive, InDesign, and such. I
have that stuff in Windows flavor.

If both of those are a "no", then I'm going with Parallels on my
MacBook Pro when I get it late October/early November-ish.

Hmmmm..........now it this codeweavers bunch would figure out a way to run
Steiny software on Linux, that would be fun. One of the *other* reasons I
don't like Macs is the OS and all of the bloat that I can't get rid of..

Well Deej, I think if we could take your PCs away for a year and you could
only use a Mac with OSX, I think you'd be hooked. If you had one of those
Mac Pro machines, we'd have a hell of a time getting it away from you. I
don't think you'd be talking about bloat. Like they say, once you go Mac
you never go back!

If we're back to the UNIX carnal thing, it's a moot point for Mac users,
that never slowed us down. If your talking bloated operating systems, Windows
is certainly more bloated than Mac OSX. Both systems can be stripped down,
the key is knowing how to do that.

Apple should give more options when installing. I think the language libraries
in OSX are bloat. I sure don't need five versions of Chinese, much less
one version of Chinese. However, they can be stripped out in minutes.

One thought would be if you could run the XP version of Paris on Mac OSX,
for the Mac guys. It might be more convenient, but I'm not sure that it
really makes any sense though.

Anyways, I just wanted to mention the Crossover Mac software for anybody
that would be interested. There are other companies that are working on
similar things that will be coming out in the next six months.

But basically I'd be running PC software on a ridiculously overpriced piece
of proprietary hardware with ridiculously overpriced replacement parts and
peripherals on an OS that wouldn't really give me any advantage over windows
other than the fact that if I *wanted* to use OSX rather than Windows (which
I don't) then I could........on a ridiculously overpriced piece of
proprietary hardware with overpriced replacement parts and peripherals.

Wow!! This is even greater news than Bootcamp. I hope they get this thing
out to market. Having the ability to tun Logic Audio-OSx, Nuendo(Pc Version)
& Samplitude . As well as the some of the other cool Mac OS-x features, on
the same Machine, makes for better work flow..

Note: Apple should lift the Apple OS-x only version of Logic Audio if it
is to survive. As it stands today, they are losing groud big time when they
made that move. Cross platform compatibility is the name of the game. And,
while they're at it, make all of their apps (including OSX) PC compatible..

Let's run OSX on a DELL..???

Actually, Mac replacement parts (Since the G4) have been the same parts as
the PC..Execpt for the CPU, the parts (video card, Hard Drives, CD/DVD drives,
USB,Firewire) are al compatible..
Same cheap parts.. It's only the Cases & OS that proprietary.

On the pro computing side, A Mac Pro is comparably priced to the Dell, but
you can run Windows and Mac O/S, on the Mac. Many guys have dropped faster
processors in the Mac Mini. The MOBO is the only thing that you can't upgrade
easily on a Mac. You could always replace it with a PC MOBO, though. If
a company put out a cheap Mac compatible MOBO that would sure change everything,
but that is not likely to happen. If a company backwards engineered the
Apple ROM chips like Compaq did with the IBM ROM, they would make a lot of
money.

The one area Apple is missing the boat is the cheap mini tower with PCI slots.
If you could buy a Mac Mini tower for $499.00 that could run Widows and
Mac O/S, would you? Or would you still complain that you can get a PC for
$299.00? You see no matter what Apple does, people will still bitch and
say Apple sucks.

Until you use both platforms for some time you won't really know.

If you were holding my MacBook Pro with the RAID running and you saw what
it can do, you would be forced to remove at least one “ridiculously” from
your comments.

Hey,

At least you know that this is just WINE :-)

For those who don't know, it's a windows API emulator, and outside of the
list of tested, "approved" applications it doesn't run much else (of any
complexity) reliably. Since it's an emulator it's definitely not for multitrack
audio apps :-)

Of course it can't run anything that needs direct hardware access, and that's
not likely to change soon. But it _does_ run 90% of the Windows software
someone might need. For example, my workplace is a hardcore Windows shop
except on the server side where I've snuck in some linux and Apache. So I
have to use Outlook, and the entire office suite installs quite nicely via
winetools and wine. Also, it's possible to assign the M$oft pptp protocol
only to Outlook, so my entire work network isn't exposed to my home network
when I want to check my email. For other software that works under wine,
most of the Adobe apps, development IDEs, web design, even some games reportedly,
though I don't do any gaming.

My point was only that Windows emulation is alive and (fairly) well over
here in the _real_ alternative OS, and it's GPL'd and getting better all
the time.

Don't get me wrong, it's great for most office apps, and I run it under suse.

Certainly useful to have for those couple of apps that don't have good counterparts
in the linux world, or which are really picky about file types.

I've used SuSE some myself, mostly when a) the user had a preference for
KDE and I think SuSE does K by far the best, or b) it was a laptop. Until
Ubuntu got their laptop work up to snuff (Dapper really, but Breezy was a
big step up) I'd almost always try SuSE first and if that didn't work then
I'd dig in my heels and fight it out with Debian. I think I even have our
mail relay running on SuSE because every now and then I want a package and
I type apt-get and the little bastard gets all confused ;-)

If you down load the MP3 Pod cast and fast forward to the inter view it's
a lot more telling than I can describe. They claim that it is not emulation
as we know it. It works like direct commands or requests. Of corse I'm
speaking of the Mac version that is not out yet.

apt-get install xen-system

Doesn't quite do what you're claiming yet, but neither does the CW stuff
yet. It will get there.

I really like SUSE. I had never touched linux in my life until last year.

I bought a boxed copy of 9.1 (including very useful manuals) and set it up
dual boot on my two laptops.

It took about 1 hour per laptop, including getting the wireless configured
and including all the major browsers, open office, and about 1000 other apps
:-)

I have to say that Open Office has come a long, long way, extremely usable,
stable and not missing any features that I use.

It took me quite a bit longer to get the MONO environment and compiler up
and running, that's why I got into SUSE first - as it comes with a mono distro.

I did however go on to research several other linux distros that are capable
of running off CF cards. This is for use in low cost public information display
system clients driving large flat panel displays in Airports, Train stations,
etc.

My favorite of that breed was Puppy linux. It can boot off a 128M USB stick
and creates a ram disk for temp files. We found that we can build the entire
client, including hardware for about $350 bucks.

Chuck according to the the wine website, it's not an emulator. It supposed
to be able to make OSX run DLL's.

So unlike Dell, Apple gives you a choice, you don't have to pay for their
3 year warranty.

Not so fast :).

You can kill warranty if you want to by calling Dell, and I'd be very
surprised if you couldn't kill it from the website too. The only time I've
seen Dell say no was in a prepackaged 'special offer' already discounted in
flyers/web ads. The warranty moves in one year increments. Last time I
talked with Apple they didn't offer that much option to move around in their
warranty.

The other thing that may not have been covered is that Dell usually offers
discounts and incentives - which I didn't see referenced by the AP writer,
Robert Weston.

Still in all, this is good news and I'm glad to see Apple and Dell going at
it, just means better and cheaper for us users.

At the bottom of the article the Dell clerk's surprise is noted.
Perhaps there are incentives he's unaware of. I share your view
on the benefits accruing to the end user.

Why would anyone want to buy a Dell for audio?

I understand what you're saying Aaron and I think it's great that a Dell
works for audio, but my point is that with a Win PC, you have choices.

Precisely-

Though I actually know 2 studios that run Dells (one does one level
below major label stuff, the other does Imax Post - one of the top
2 or 3 in the world-) the point in adding this article to the discussion
is simply to hilight that Macs aren't (anymore) ridiculously overpriced
hardware boxes requiring rediculously overpriced replacenemt parts
to repair.

Dells have the public perception (rightly or wrongly) of being decent,
working machines configured and tested to suit the needs of the mainstream.
Since Macs hace been labelled overpriced & elitist, it's significant that
they are now
less costly, or at least in the same ballpark as, such a mainstream
competitor.

I could care less which platform anyone chooses to use for whatever it is
they do, but when I went to price out "Audio" PCs for a Nuendo setup, comparable
configs to the Macs I had already for Logic (and on another box, for Paris)
ended up costing either just about the same, or (usually) more...

FWIW again

Ted

Well, my laptop is a Dell and I do audio on it. The Precision Workstation
series is also an excellent, high quality platform for anything.

And don't forget millions of kids around the world who have nothing but a
Dell in the house and want to make music on their computer.

I love Dell machines. And theyhave thee best warranties on the planet.ANd
I build Custom audio PC's.

See, it depends on What dell model line you're talking about. But, I would
say the even your run of the Mill 499.00 dell, with a secod Hard drive can
and will give you at least 100 tracls with loads of Plugs..

Now, there high-end workstations(That have been speced) by Digidesign, are
some of the best machines out there.

They should be made to suffer in hopes that they will give up and pay money
to *real* studios running Windows PC's.

I think it's nice to have the option to run what ever you need on a Mac.
For mobile computing it would be great to have the option to run Windows
software with out Windows. At home/office I would still prefer to run Windows
software on a PC.

If all things were equal price wise, do you guys think it would be an advantage
in the studio to have a computer that could run both Mac and PC software?

The cost factor. I don't think this Apple price advantage thing is going
to last. I think Dell will rob Peter to pay Paul and kick Apples butt before
too long on the price thing. Dell sells a lot more computers than Apple
does. Anyways, here is another article. I'm wondering how true it is.

http://www.architosh.com/news/2006-08/2006a0828_dell-v-macpr o.html

I was reading some where on the net, where their was a debate about the
cost factor. Somebody stated that they could build a PC with the same configuration
as the Mac Pro for about a thousand dollars. Another guy pointed out that
the processors alone are about $1500.00. Another guy pointed out that the
DIY guys need to add in $299.00 on top of their hardware estimates for Microsoft
XP pro to be fair, because they usually don't.

Another guy was saying that when he built a PC and had problems with components
working properly. He called the manufacturer and they blamed Microsoft,
when he called Microsoft they blamed the manufacturer. He could never get
either one of them to take responsibility and warranty the products. His
claim was that he had problems with multi components that were never resolved,
and he spent a lot of time on the phone and a lot of time trying to fix the
problems himself. I'm sure that this is only one guys bad experience. I
know I haven't had those kind of problems with my home built PCs yet, however,
the warranty issue is something to consider.

I still don't see any thing on the prebuilt PC side that is on the level
of the Mac Pro, as far as features / price. I guess the debate will go on.

I for one hope that Apple puts out a cheaper tower capable of doing some
serious A/V work.

James
