| Cue Mix Headphones? [message #73028] |

I'm thinking that it's getting to be time to replace my trusty old Fostex
T-20s w/ new and better sounding headphones. The great thing about the T-20s
is that they seem to be almost indestructable. I've had to replace the occasional
cable and other bits and pieces, but I've never blown a pair, and God knows,
I've tried!
So what do you guys use? I need phones that can get LOUD without crapping
out. I run them w/ a Bryston 3B into custom made breakout boxes. I have
a pair of Sony 7506s that I sometimes use for cue mix, but I'm afraid they
can't take the abuse that the Fostex 'phones can handle.

Hi Gantt
I used to use the T-20's in my old studio, but when I started to do location
TV audio,I bought the V6 /7506's, and I swear that you can't kill them with
an axe.
I've had 2 pair in the 21 years that I've been doing location sound,(all
around the globe), and they've taken everything I can dish out to them, and
they're good sounding 'phones.
BTW, they're pretty much the location recording standard these days.

I hate the 7506's hyped low end and brittle high end... we have 5 dead
ones in a box around here somewhere... blown elements. But I know many
people that swear by them.
If you like the Fostex, check out the T40. Also for *loud*, try to
find a used pair of AKG 270's... the dual element ones. You could
almost use these things for nearfields! :-)

I have 7 pair of AKG K240s and only once took a driver out
thanks to a 1k sign wave at ludicrous speed. I don't love their
boxy/cloudy sound but they do take a beating. Shattering RnR levels
from a 175 watt amp.
20 years and counting.

Man! You guys are nice to your talent! My T-20s are $80 apiece... less
on sale. If I'm going to begin replacing my 6 pairs of them I need to stay
in the $100 or less range.
By the way - I use Sennheiser 580s in the control room. I read the thread
about Grado RS-1s with gear lust in my heart. What do the rest of us use?
