Do you need to have an interface connected to a card for the submix to
work?

With my new setup, I may track, say, 24 tracks on the mobile rig.
When I bring that mix home, I don't have two MEC's in the studio rig
because I've never needed it. I just got a second card for the studio
rig -- since I'm only mixing down, and not using any external efx, do
I need to have a second MEC or 442 connected to the second card in
order for it to work?

Does this make sense? Sorry -- I'm on call at the hospital and just
got woken up (4:20 A-freakin'-M to unlock a user account, because our
new owners are too freakin' cheap to pay for a helpdesk operator
between 2A-freakin'-M and 6A-freakin'-M), so my brain ain't completely
wired in yet.

no, 1 interface is fine for multiple eds cards just the cables to
connect the two cards is needed. you can use the 1 mec to control
both cards by switching between the 2.
