I was just looking at the Nuendo-post newsgroup and who should turn up there
but Max Howarth.
The oldies of the NG will remember him...he had a few Paris setups in his
production facility in Edinburgh I think writing jingles and posting
commercial spots
Looks like he is Nuendo now....
Wondered where he got to....

I've chatted with Max via email a few times recently - seems like they are
doing really well - pretty much the lead audio post facility in Scotland I
believe. He's on the Nuendo forum quite often also. Derek and Brian T are
also on the Nuendo forum. Good to see past Paris users around and about.

I agree wholeheartedly Neil, although I think their previous one, (when they
had Paris) was more interesting and fun.

Martin, on a completely different topic, I can't recall if I
asked you this before, but did you ever work on any Little
River Band stuff (another Aussie group, yes?) back in the day?

Not with the band as such, but I certainly recorded with them for some

Was just wondering - every now & then one of the radio
stations that I listen to will play one of their songs & I
always notice how good the vocals sound (not just the
performance thereof, but overall sound of the vocal track).

In fact, one day they played a LRB song, followed by "Midnight
Train to Georgia", and I was thinking "DAMN, both those songs
have great-sounding vocal tracks!", then they played another
tune right afterwards that had actually quite a bit of
distortion on the lead vox track... it was not a hard-rocker,
it was a R&B-type tune - can't recall which one, now - and all I
could wonder was how they let that go... was it the first
performance, before they really got things dialed in & it
turned out to be the singers best performance on that song? Was
it a scratch track & the engineer just said f--k it, but they
ended up using it as the real take? In either case, the mic was
definitely a bit too hot going in, because on the louder vocal
parts you'd hear it breaking up. Wish I could remember which
song it is, because I know everyone's heard it. Sure didn't
stop the song from becoming a hit, though.

My cohort here, Ed Stasium engineered Midnight train to Georgia. The gold
record is on the wall in his studio. I never got around to asking him about
his signal chain on that song.......think I will though. I like the LRB too.

;o)

You damn well BETTER ask him what Gladys used! Yeah, yeah, it's
partly her voice, but it comes across so well in that tune. Find
out - that is your mission.

Well, the Air Supply stuff you did sounded good, so I was just
wondering. Certainly helps to have good singers, but part of
the art is figuring out what works best for their voices!

I was fortunate enough to cut some vocals with Gladys for her #1 "Love Overboard"
single (which won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Group in '88). She was one
of the easiest singers to work with--a killer voice with killer control (not
to mention a delight to work with, as were the Pips...), We used an AKG
C24 into a Trident TSM Preamp and an 1176. She did know how to work a mic...:)

I have a gold record on my wall for that one, too... :)
