I feel like there are a few misconceptions being posted about apples market
share:
1. Apples Q2 2007 US Market share for NOTEBOOKS was 17.6 percent, placing
them third behind dell and HP.
2. Apples overall market share of the US market as of Q2 2007 was/is %5.9.
To put this in perspective, dell, the market share leader is @ 16%. I believe
this puts apple as the overall number 5 PC maker in the US
3. Apple owns the personal audio player space, they have devestated all potential
rivals.
4. Apple dominates the online retail music market in real numbers, not to
mention *mindshare*
5. Apple moved 1,000,000 iPhones domestically since launch, a feat that took
the iPod 2 years to accomplish.
6. Margins on all apple consumer goods, computers and accessories are insanely
high. Analysts estimate that the typical gross margin the typical ipod are
approximately 40%. Dells box margin hovers between 3-5% on the box.
7. Apple derives revenue from the hardware and software. Think about it,
there's no 800 lb gorilla waiting in the wings to collect OS licensing that
is potentially more expensive than the computer itself. They have an aggressive
upgrade schedule, with features people actually want and are willing to pay
for.

Chuck,
As you know, I consider Apple and Microsoft to be essentially the same thing,
giant corporations who expect _me_to pay _them_ to restrict my freedom. I
was only commenting on the 'Apple is dominating' rhetoric. You correctly
point out in the music player market and the buy online music market they
do. Outside of those markets they are and probably always will be niche players.
Maybe phones but Nokia might have a few things to say about that as well.
Think Debian.

Who else do you include on that list? It could go far beyond the
computer industry.

But with no computer hardware maker above 20% market share, it looks
like they are ALL niche players in that respect.
> Maybe phones but Nokia might have a few things to say about that as well.
Apple will need a lower priced phone to gain a bigger market share
there. I think they are currently targeting only a few percent market
share, but cell phones represent a huge market and they've already made
a noticeable impact in a very short time. You're right, there are some
established players who won't take that lying down.

That's a good thought.

Just need to tell RME, Steinberg, Cakewalk, MOTU, et al (I doubt Digi would
ever get on board). Perusing through an xml export from Cubase 4 got me to
wondering if this isn't in the developers' sights already though: there
were 3 OS formats specified - MacOS, Unix and Windows.... hmmm - either OS9
is MacOS and Unix is OSX, or Debian/linux may not be as much of a long
stretch now - esp. given the lack of love RME and other developers have
shown for Vista.
Jamie - what would you do to replace Final Cut?

Thad,
Two things
I guess I'm just not that down with the whole freedom thing :-) I definitely
understand your view, and respect it. Computers are appliances to me. Infinitely
configurable appliances.
I also don't understand your use of the word "niche". Based on experience,
you will always have the linguistic upper hand, but... The tech landscape
of the past 30 years is littered with thousands of dead brands. I fundamentally
don't understand how 4th or 5th place in a consumer market translates to
niche. Niche to me, in the context of this conversation, means things like
NeXT and Silicon Graphics. Apple is making consumer goods. People like the
goods apple produces, and buy them in large quantities. In fact, if you
took the business boxes out of the equation, and looked at the numbers from
a consumer appliance perspective, Apple would look insanely good in market
share.

It'd be great to have some commercial choices join the open source apps
already available on Linux.
> Jamie - what would you do to replace Final Cut?
I don't think that level of capability is available on Linux yet, either
commercial or open source. Look at the open source list at the bottom of
this article for a few to keep an eye on:

Makes me wanna go out and buy a Mac.
Wait a minute. I HAVE a Mac.
In fact, I have three Macs, not counting my old Quadra 950 ($2000 used in
1994 - 40 MhZ w/ a 40 megabyte HD) and my old G3, both of which are retired.
But I still want to go out and buy a new Mac! And Logic and an Apogee Symphony
system w/ 24 in and 18 out... All I need is a pile of cash!

Hey Chuck,
I'm with you. Computers are appliances, and not even very interesting ones.
The problem I have is that when someone sells me a car or a crockpot or a
lawn mower it's mine. I can do stuff to it, modify it, make it fit my needs.
I just want that same level of control over my computers, 'cause I'm a digital
grease monkey.
About 'niche,' I think as a _computer_ company Apple is a lot like SGI. There
is a small set of specialists who use their gear. They pay a premium for
it, for good reasons. Put it this way, my professional skills are in networking,
perl programming, and network security. Those are all platform agnostic things,
Macs, Windows boxes, SGI servers, and Sun boxes all need that stuff done.
If I'm looking for a job is it better for me to know how to set up a DNS
server on a Windows box, a *nix box, or a Mac? That's what I mean by niche.
Think Debian.

In the business world, making a living, I'm with you. In the consumer electronics
world, as an appliance in the home, Apple has made all the right moves.
In a world with multi computer households, what makes more sense? A focus
on business with home consumers as an afterthought, or a focus on the home
consumer.
The business desktop, and the business core room is not their goal. They
don't care about you and me, and what we need to run the world :-)
