all this sounds good BUT..WE all have been down this performance path before.
CurrleyM there is no Pro audio app that can prperly handle all these cores.much
less the whole 64 bit thing..

Naw, I'm sitting this one out..Untill all the players get on the same page.
The Os Manufatuers, cpu manufacturer the daw app...

No

So how much for the board, 4 quad cores, and a minimum memory config (I
assume 4G min, with 8-16G required, and of course XP64 or Vista 64 (ugh)) to
run it?

Nice board. It won't be long now....

I've got my eye on the Tyan S2915 mobo. Right now it would probably be =
enough for my needs with a pair of 2800 dual core Santa Rosa CPU's. The =
reason I like it is that all of my hardware is PCI form factor. The =
S2915 has a legacy 32 bit PCI slot for the Magma that is holding my =
UAD-1 cards. These cards seem to like the standard PCI bus better than =
PCIX. It also has PCI X slots which would work nicely with my RME MADI =
and AES 32 cards. Between these two busses, it would have plenty of =
pipeline for my needs and is comparatively inexpensive. It has been =
rumored that this mobo will eventually support these Barcelona CPU's. No =
word for sure yet, but if this does come to pass, a pair of Barcelonas =
in this mobo would be a sweet system for my purposes. Even if the =
Barcelonas aren't compatible with this mobo, the Santa Rosa CPU's will =
be dropping in price and a pair of those running at 3GHz per core would =
probably keep me happy for a while.

I'm more concerned about Vista than I am about hardware. I'll probably =
be one of those who tries running Cubase 4.1 on (unsupported) Windows XP =
64 or Server 2003 before I subject myself to Vista.

I was over at a friends place today that I had been helping try to put =
together PT LE system a while back using a Digi 002 on a Macbook. He had =
been having a hellacious time with the FW bus (this wasn't the Macbook =
pro) so he shitcanned the Macbook and bought one of those new Intel =
Coreduo iMac machines. This is basically a match made in heaven. A very =
elegant combination and it sounded absolutely great. If I wasn't such a =
tweakhead with such delusions of grandeur, I'd be all over a rig like =
that. It's just sooooo cool and i t was very bulletproof as far as =
stability and having plenty of =
horsepower...........uhhhh........wait!!!.....what were we talking =
about???........O'yeah......16 CPU's in one machine???

Just FYI Deej, I've run Live and SX on a laptop with Server 2003. This was
the 32 bit version. It spat at me a little getting the hardware set up, but
once I did it worked great. I think Server 2003 is the current 'sweet spot'
in the M$oft line. It has most of the really good new tech and not much of
the horror show that is Vista.

I still run Debian on all of my non-work/non-music computers, but if you
have to run Windows it's probably the way to go,

Hi DJ,
Gone thru 3 of the those 2915s so far with none working.
Also it still does not have quad core support. I got a pair of quads
sitting here and no board to use it on.
:(

Here are the 2 boards we've been eyeing as possibilities.

HI Thad,
What is server 2003 32 bit offering over Xp Pro for audio/multimedia?

Wow!!!...not working???....as in just DOA or not working as in suckage on a
scale so massive that it's not even worth jumping through the configuration
hoops?

Inquiring minds.....as usual......

Well, in my case I had to have it to do work while I was on vacation but didn't
want to give up music making.

I think if the audio cards have drivers for 64 bit XP then server 2003 could
be an improvement over Vista, which I think is pure evil. Deej is obviously
thinking of addressing far more than 3GB of memory so will have to use either
64 bit XPish something or Vista. But I agree that for most people who don't
have to deal with server side stuff there's little advantage to Server 2003
over XP for recording.
