Greetings,

As my fancy new Quad core audio uber-boxen has only one PCI slot which is
my Pulsar card (still love that little bastard) it appears I have to get
a UAD-2 for all of my Roland Space Echo and Helios EQ goodness.

Universal Audio is running LIMITED TIME promo where they will oh so generously
not make me pay for the plugs I've already paid for a second time. Might
Microsoft of them if you ask me. Post 12/31 I'll have to pay for them again.

Anyone here have opinions about these?

Hi Thad,

I hadn't looked into the UAD-2 proposition yet. From what you're
stating I'd say jump. No question about it. I have to assume the sound
quality is the same. I'm in the same boat as you with a quad core. Too
few available slots in the PCI-e world is more the problem these days for
me.
I also love my Scope card. I am running Paris and Cubase together in this
box,
or will be soon.

I'll probably get the UAD-2 Dual. That will be way more power than I'll be
needing
with Paris as the mothership. I rarely run out of resources with one card
as it is.
The multi Neve setup must be great though huh? I have a couple of Neve pres
that
get most of my overdub tasks so I'm not itching for a lot more of that sound
here.

Are you feeling had by them forcing the new card on you? Get a Magma and a
few
UAD-1s then. Might cost the same but you won't have been had M$ style.

I'm a sheep all the way on this one.

Tom

Why would you try to screw your loyal customers by imposing a penalty ? fuck
Universal Audio on that note.

I couldn't remember when the "pumpkin time" was. Glad to know I still have
a month or so to dawdle and save up. I'm definitely getting one of these as
I have one extra PCIe slot. I'll go with the Solo version. I don't max my
UAD1 out as it is, but I like the peace of mind that 2.5 times the
processing power can bring. :-)

Well, I don't take moral stances when it comes to audio hardware. They write
good code, I want it, I'll pay up, right or wrong. I only have moral opinions
when talking to Deej about politics and DC about religion. Or maybe the other
way around.

I'm guessing I'll pick up a Dual card. Especially mixing the rock band I'm
in these days it seems like I never have enough compression and EQ.

The things I like about the UAD kit are the 1176 and Helios EQ models. And
the Space Echo but one only needs a few of those.

I'm still annoyed that uadio is acting like they're doing me a favor by upgrading
my already purchased plugs for free. But whatever, I don't really have a
lot of choice.

thad,

I'm running 4 x UAD-1's and a UAD-2 Quad here. The license for your existing
plugins will transfer to the UAD-2. Some of them just haven't been coded
for the UAD-2 yet.

Having a quad borders on the ridiculous. I haven't thought about running
out of DSP in a couple of months. You'd be surprised how you can muddy up
a mix by using 12 Neve 33601's.

;)

Hey Tom, I wouldn't worry about too much Neve sound with the Neve EQs
and compressors. I used to have a 3360 comp and its sound was very warm,
sweet and luscious. Using Neve pres and EQs and comps together is not
like putting chocolate syrup on chocolate ice cream (actually, that
sounds good). In fact they were designed to complement each other in a
console, by one of the best audio designers of all time - you won't get
a Neve "buildup" problem.

Hi Bill,

I don't doubt Rupert builds in a beautiful sound into almost
everything he touches. Oddly, I had a hard time liking the Neve
comp (UAD) when I gave it a spin. It seemed difficult to setup
for seemingly not a huge audio gain. I'm sure I missed something
there. It's cpu hungry tendency drove me away. I do like the Fairchild
although rarely and frequently use the La2a and 1176.

I have heard engineers complain of the Neve buildup issue regarding
consoles though. I like to use the hardware Neve pres as spice to bring
some
more attention to certain tracks.

If I get the UAD-2 I'll have the resources to try the Neve comp again
and understand it's use. Have you got any tips there?

Tom

Hey DJ, I thought Chris Ludwig stated that when you use UAD1's with UAD2,
you bring the performance of the UAD2(s) down to the UAD1 level.

HI Lamont,

The DSP power of the UAD-2 card is not effected other than the system host load get a little higher.
Wish they would hurry up and get the rest of the plug ins ported so people can get rid of the old cards.

LaMont,

I'm not having any issues at all running the 4 x UAD-1's in my Magma and
a UAD-2 Quad in a mobo PCIe slot. I'm running a PNY quadro video card which
uses two IRQ's and the UAD2 is sharing one of those IRQ's and it is still
running very smoothly. this is the first time I've ever experienced joy when
sharing an interrupt with any device and a graphics driver. I don't know
if it's just a well written set of drivers for both devices or having plenty
of bandwidth on the PCIe bus or a combination of both. Whatever's happening,
it's working for me nicely.

Hey.. No no.. He did not state that it would not run and run smoothly, only
that by mixing both cards (UAD1 & UAD2) the UAD2's performance will be "Idled
down" to that of the UAD1..

You mean as far as latency is concerned?
