Have you seen a price on JazzMutant? I'm thinking Lemur was $6k+ (but could
be wrong), so I'm guessing $5-10k.
Actually, in place of a control surface (if it fully suffices for one) it
could be a viable alternative to
an ID or Euphonix MC, though I'm still jonesin' for an MC.... :-)
One day we'll be using these things for mixing and people will wonder what
the heck
one did with a hardware console that couldn't change views, layouts,
screens, or customize
faders, throw length, etc. ;-)

I don't know the prices but they should come down over time.
I'm currently comfortable mixing using a mouse, with no control surface
needed. I can be very precise that way, and Logic is already
configurable to group and show channels onscreen as I like. So I
vacillate on whether a control surface would be a worthwhile improvement.
The MC looks interesting, if you get one I'll have to come check it out.
Multi-touch interface ideas are flashy and intriguing. Maybe even moreso
for graphics work than audio. The demos look like fun!

I dunno, I've spent a fair bit of my life practicing how to use bash and
Emacs. Not sure if I need to be able to push around stuff with my fingers
to use a computer.
Also, this is yet another attempt to make a computer act unlike a computer.
It's not going to make mistakes, need updates, recognize things incorrectly,
and so on. Maybe this is Microsoft's Newton?

But the high end places already have things the smaller studios don't, like
SSL/Neve desks, big fancy monitors, vintage mics and instruments, hot secretaries,
coke dealers on speed dial, and so forth. But they're still getting their
clocks cleaned.
I'm wrong a lot, I thought the Colts were nuts for passing on Ryan Leaf (no,
really, I did), but I wouldn't bet a dime on the Surface getting traction
in the market.

I would. As a security guy, the applications I see for this thing are wild.
Casino's have lotttsa money and like toys that allow quick and accurate
access to visual information. Both visual and proximity information. Imagine
one web page to control all entries, cameras, motion detectors and audio
groups as well as routing what video to what viewing device. That web tech
already exists as an overlay, but with 'this' thing on top of it the
possiblities for speed and accuracy go way up.
Will it dominate? Not unless the price gets real reasonable. Consumers are
cheap.
