Well... I haven't merged midi since about 1991. Something about it
just....seems....well, wrong. ;-))
If you are returning midi from a lot of outboard gear to a limited number
of midi ins, it can be useful. Likewise, if you are controlling a single
device from two sources (midi control surface and keyboard both to a single
sound module), merge can come in handy. I found splits, and routing a
single in to multiple outs more useful as a keyboard player (layering), but
that was back in the Geoff Downes-envy days. :-)

I think midi-merge was useful prior to multi-timbral synths/
sound modules, but nowadays it's kinda like mastering to DAT...
IOW, you can do it, but why would you want to?
