I'm only discussing audio here, not politics, OK Kim. ;^)
Suppose you crank 30hz on a graphic EQ and pull down ALL other
frequencies. Does that sound good?
Nope. Pretty annoying
Now crank 20,000 hz. Did that fix it?
Nope. Annoying and scratchy.
Lack of middle frequencies produces a terrible mix.
The idea that we need more liars on one extreme to balance liars on
another extreme is crazy. IMO.
We need to locate and raise the middle frequencies if we want a full
sounding, complete mix.
Cheers,

PS. You could pull 30hz and 20khz completely out of the mix and it would
still sound decent.

Have you ever received a project to mix that was tracked with hi/lowpass
filters engaged on every track? I have and inevitably there is some
information there that has been lost that may be critical to making the mix.
IMO, intelligent use of filters to achieve a wholistic and comprehensive
result is preferable to not having as much missing info to work with as
possible, even if much of it is rumble or hiss.

You're right, I don't generally track with filters on unless there's a
significant problem, such as excessive noise on location from a highly
windy source.
In a mix I only add filtering after due consideration of the entire
spectrum.
I sometimes wonder about engineers who rely on highly filtered sources
and assume there's any fidelity there. I hear way too much mud in their
politics, er, mixes.
