Help,

I just finished the first demo track for the next Sarahtonin CD, and
when I convert it to mp3 (in Wavelab), it sounds awful, kind of like what a
cassette tape used to sound like after it got eaten by the player. It's a
16 bit/44.1 khz wave file, and I'm using the same settings for the mp3 that
I've always used. I even installed Wavelab on my bedroom computer and tried
doing the conversion there and got the same result, which makes me think I
did something weird to the .wav file that's messing up the conversion
process somehow. Any ideas?

Sarah,.............did you.........

Import the individual .paf's into a stereo file in WL (go to
File>Open>Wave>file type>Ensoniq PAF then shift+right click on each one and
then click on open?

At this point, the L & R mono files whould open as a stereo PAF in Wavelab.

Then did you process/dither the files using the render function and save
them as a separate file? did they play back OK? Then did you set a directory
path to save this as a 16bit/44.1kHz .wav file? Did it still play back OK?

Next, did you go to File>Save Special (wave)>Encode MP3>Save as Type>MPEG-1
Layer3 (MP3) and below this there should be an active bar that should say :
MP3/Stereo/44.100Hz/LameEric-128Kbs/Attr

Then you name the file and directory pach and hit OK. this works for me
every time.

I'll be out for a few hours. I'll check back in later on. If you're still
having trouble PM me a animix-at-animas-dot-net and I'll try to help you get
this going.

Regards,

Deej

That's the standard method for rendering and dithering in Wavelab, if you're
a total control freak and want to make sure you don't end up saving your
file to a temp directory that you'll never find again.

I'd prolly hurry it up. I'm not too sure I'd feel very good about having you
squirming around behind me squeezin' your lizard in a bathroom.

Well, I tried 192 instead of the usual 128 and got the same debris. Didn't
try any other rates.

There was a miniscule DC offset in one channel, but correcting that didn't
change the problem.

Well, not exactly, but I followed the same process I used for all the tracks
on the "Wayward" CD, and those mp3's are all fine (
http://www.sarahtonin.com/wayward%20back.htm )
I tried converting some other files just as an experiment, and it seems this
distortion only happens on tracks that have the Alesis DM5 drum module, and
it seems like it might be related specifically to the DM5 hi hat hits . . .
but that's crazy. I don't know. I'm still experimenting.

If you want to hear what I'm hearing, I put a couple 14 second snippets of
the mp3 and the original .wav file here:
http://www.sarahtonin.com/music/Survival%20bit.wav
http://www.sarahtonin.com/music/Survival%20bit%201.mp3

Pretty ugly . . .

Anyway . . . thanks DJ, and everyone else for your help.

Shouldn't do anything with the sound, as far as I know. Have you heard about
creating optimized audio file headers on wave files? I think it's a form for
exstra non audio informations. But Paris hate to import wave files with
these kind of things, so there is a little program that can strip this
header things. You can do this thing inside Wavelab too, I think it's in the
Option/Preferences/File folder.

Good luck

Erling

Sarah,
And the problem is?

It's an mp3. Sounds okay unless the hat was
supposed to be more straight than it sounded on 3+.

Try burning a disc and listen on another system to see
if it still sucks. =20

It sounded okay here. Nifty actually!
T.

Did you try compressing a mix with no hihats? And did the wierd little
glitches go away?

Looking forward to your next CD.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm hearing anything other than what sounds
like a regular mp3 conversion, excpt for one thing... I heard
what seemed to be some clicks on the bassoon/sax-sounding thing
that I didn't notice in the wav file... nothing with the hi-hat
though, so I dunno if the DM-5 has anything to do with it. This
is just on my PC speakers.

I'll have to do some more experimenting, but I needed to get this to the
band so they can start practicing, so I finally got a good mp3 by using the
"variable rate" and "highest quality" settings. It's a bit larger file, but
it sounds good. If you want to hear the whole demo, it's at
http://www.sarahtonin.com/playlist/Survival%20demo.m3u The section after the
second chorus will have some kind of solo, not sure what yet . . . violin?
slide guitar? gritty blues harmonica? kazoo? I don't know . . .

Thanks

Sarah
