Not necessarily. For example if someone feels they are doing better as
an illegal alien than they'd do where they came from, it doesn't matter
how much better they'd be doing as a legal alien, IF they feel they have
no chance getting in legally. The comparison would only be between what
they see as realistic choices.

I was just following one of your links. Looks like it's
AmericanProgress.org and the National Research Council as sources.

Perhaps faked ID sets include stolen SS numbers.

I don't know if the numbers are solid from any of these sources. But
from what I've seen around here, it's not just migrant farm workers.

We're talking people who work long hours in construction. There's money
in that. I think they pay OK in slaughterhouses. Not so much hourly pay
in restaurant work but lots of hours available. Some folks could be
working multiple jobs. Motivated people can make money over time.

I grew up on a farm also, although a very small one. Now doing the city
thing, too, and like a lot of the aspects but not all. Still love wide
open spaces!

Hi DJ,
You wrote:
I think that in the white community there is a mindset that for 40 years
the same level of education and opportunity has been offered to minorities
so that they can learn "the system" because the "system" is what works for
the whites. You can argue that this is not correct and you would be right
to some degree, but a big part of why is that children in urban public schools
often aren't expected to perform at exceptional levels and a welfare system
has contributed to the utter destruction of the "family unit". this seems
to have happened to urban blacks in disproportionate numbers and that, my
friend, is in large part due to Ted Kennedy and "his boys". You don't see
inner sity youth invited for a romp on the lwan at Hyannis do you? You didn't
see chelsea Clinton attending public schools in DC, did you?"

I see your point: But, I think what's missing, especially today, with the
urban hip-hop community, is that they saw My generation go thru the proper
process of doing what "the system" deemed necessary that a peron o do to
get ahead in America.. Well, they saw get our Degrees but, they also saw
and heard the frustrations that we encountered wih corporate america..

Subsusquentaliy, they (GenX & now Gen Now)african americans do no really
buy into the so-called system. They view it as rigged. More about "who you
know", then What you know..They see corporate america as the ultimate "Set
Aside" program there is. Set asides not for them , but for others..

Who can blame them? I have 2 in college now, with my son(U of M) graduating
next spring. My Daughter is a sophmore @ Columbia. It ahs been very dificault
for thier mom and me to convience them that gettign their degrees is very
good choice. They have a real disdain for corporate america seeing wha heir
parens have gone thru in the past 24 years..

I said all that to say. You have guys like Ice-cube, Dr Dre, who from good
homes, but did not want to go thru mainstram way that they saw their parents
go thru.
Blacks in america no longer want to second -class citizens. But, they do
not trust or want to play the rigged(america) game either..
All in all, right now, I would say that we, the African Americns are lost.
Searching for and identity .Because everytime we have tried to "assimulate"
we were not welcomed..

So, you the gov ask us to go to war, there is almost a 95 percent resounding
answer of no. Why?

-We, african americans have fought in every major war since this country
inception, and still enountered bigotry, lynchings, muders, hanging, beatings...etc..

See, in each war, we were promised full cititenship and freedom, and simple
equall american liberties.. We're tlaking from the 1700's to 1964 passage
of the civil rights act.

Then, lets not even talk about the Bussing problems that once again caused
a wide gap in the education btw whites and blacks..

Then the Cia/FBI under hoover decides place to the Black american race under
survalence when it became evident that we would rather die off than to be
subjected to the treatment we getting from america.. Then the CIA dispersed
drugs...Guns....And started these gange called Crips and Bloods..

CIA...Introduce "crack in to the black community in 1984..Then, started imprisioning
the very Drug Junkies they got hooked in the first place.. Get them hook
on drugs...Which removes the fathers from the home...No male role models....Single
family homes...Welfare.......You start getting a clearer picture that's not
widely told no taught..Then by the 80's again the Gov passed the 1 crack
gram =25-30 years, 1 pound of cocaine= 4years tops...

It's easy to see that the junkie (Black) in most cases will be caught with
the 1 gram and the person (usually) white with pound is not punished as hard..So,
you almost have an entire generation in prisoned from the 80's who are serving
25-30 years for possesion of 1 gram of crack!! Is i a coesidence that most
are Black? So, then form the 80's we have black sons and daughters fatherless
whcih equals ruderless, with only the young mom to care for them.. A Spriraling
situation as you can see..

All because Hoover an others deemed that we were a threat..

Lamont, I live every day as a minority... where I live, the
population is about 70% Hispanic. So since I can (and do) live
as a minority, I guess based on your criteria I'm qualified to
chime in:

1.) If you're poor in this country, you get free healthcare...
period. Yeah it sucks that you have to sit in an ER waiting
room to get it, but said poor person also doens't get $5k's
worth of bills like us "rich" people do when their daughter has
to go in for an appendectomy, or tonsilectomy, or knee surgery
from a volleyball injury (yeah it's one of those sports
us "rich" people get their girls into in school - you know, the
ones where us "rich" people have to pay for uniforms & separate
sports insurance & stuff, while the "poor" people get those fees
waived... another way of saying "you 'rich' people are paying
for the poor people's kid's uniforms, too" What - you think the
school district absorbed those costs? LOL!!!). So even
though I've been fortunate enough to have decent insurance,
I've also paid into a LOT of deductible's & "20% patient
portions" over the years, too. Is it better than no insurance
at all? Yes, I will admit that it is. Is it cheaper than being
able to get free healthcare if you go into an ER as a person
who has no ability to pay? FUCK No!
This has no boundary - you can be black, white, asian,
hispanic, paisley... just because you cannot pay, a hospital
cannot deny you essential care.

2.1) I know of no "United White Persons College Fund", or
"Chevron White Persons College Scholarship Program", or any
type of government or corporate charitable tuition-related
assistance available to anyone other than a.) those that can
demonstrate true need, and b.) Those for African-Americans &
Hispanics & maybe a scant few for Asians.
2.2) I also know of NO government-mandated programs that audit
businesses to make sure they have an adequate amount of white
folk working for them. This all means that the educational &
employment opportunities for minorities are vastly superior
to those available to "non-minorities" (essentially: "anyone
who is white"). So why are you playing the race card?

And don't play the "400 years of opression!" thing at me,
either, because if it wasn't for your own brethren in the Ivory
Coast kidnapping & selling your ancestors off to whomever
wanted to buy them, there wouldn't have been a slave trade to
begin with.

Man - really getting tired of being blamed for every fucking
evil in the western hemisphere!!!

Hey Neil, I would only say this about the Ivory coast statements:
It did not start with tribal leaders "outing' selling of slave to the slave
traders. Rather, it was an the "Industry" or better, a need for the cheap
labor that prompted the the slave trade..

Those running the slave trade: were the Arabs, Jews, Spaniards..

Now, if you tired of being blamed for as you say "every thing wrong with
western blah blah"....hen I offer you this:

How do you think Blacks feel? It's 2007 and racism still exist in this nation
of ours. You say you're tire!! ha Lol!!.. You don;t know the meaning of tired...

Alllright. I'm done with this thread. I can't have family looking over my
shoulder at stuff like this. Any suggestions, retorts, rebuttals,
discussions anyone wants to send me. please do so via email.
Sorry LaMont, I'm concerned you're gonna have a heart attack man. Find a
Starbucks, please, and get yourself some Tazo and quality inner peace time.
Your probably a workaholic, like me. I do Starbucks almost every day usually
with a friend, has been wonderful for me.

as to the slavery issue whether or not outside forces entered the
picture, people have been more than willing to enslave others and even
their own. one only has to look around the world today and see that
nothing has changed about slavery. while it may be distasteful for
one to accepts what ones own can and will do for profit it does not
change the fact that they did and did so willingly.

I know more than you can imagine...

Look what you turn into when someone disagrees with you!

Look in the mirror, man, if you want someone to blame.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Hey LaMont,

Calm down and think about this for a minute...

Who do you think respects you more...

The folks who tiptoe around you, or get real quiet as soon as you
say certain words and bring up certain subjects, or those who
are willing to tell you the truth as they see it?

Who do you think regards you as an equal and who regards you
as still a victim? What will you forever be in their eyes?

Just a thought.

C'mon, Don, this is your MO. You push someone's buttons saying things you
know will sincerely anger and upset them, and then when they get sincerely
angry and upset you come in with a grandfatherly, 'Now, look what's become
of you.' I've seen it here a dozen times and even bit once in a while.

For various reasons involving mostly where I like to live, what music I enjoy,
and what kind of women I find attractive I've spent a lot more time with
non-white people than most white people do. The difference between them and
me is that while I can talk about racism and economic (in)justice and all
of that, they have to actually live it, day in and day out. So give it a
rest, Don, there are some things that we simply can't understand.

Drugs aren't the answer... ;^)

So far we've seen conflicting numbers about the impact of illegal
immigration. It would be best to have accurate data before condoning one
policy over another. This is not an easy issue, obviously. It can be and
is used as a wedge issue.

Cheers,
-Jamie

Don, come on. You're too intelligent to not be intelligent at all;-) If you
can't understand or will not understand things you can't understand, the
"YOU'RE WRONG" attityde can easily be a hard attacking boomerang on
behavings like these, as far as I have seen and understood up against the
years here;-)

Think of the "sincere anger" I could lay on LaMont for a bit.
Think of what an in-kind response to him would sound like....

My M.O. is what keeps this from turning into a complete shambles.

Man, you really are clueless sometimes...

It just isn't worth losing your marbles over. After all, it's just 1's and
0's
in cyberspace. All of us here have quotes around our names. If we had
met in person instead of here, we would all get along fine. We need to
remember that.

No one has to agree with LaMont. No one has to agree with me.
We should remain civil however and LaMont has failed at that goal.
Again.

Another reason we should keep off of politics and religion, or at least
banish them to the general list like Kim asked us to.

just a thought
