I am toying with getting a new CPU.
If I am just using Paris, by itself, OR running simultaneously
with Cubase, do I need a dual processor??
I am thinking AMD 64, but they do sell those as a dual of course.
Thanks for the advice as always!

***The newer ATI/ULI chipset based boards seem to be working

work well with a Paris card.***
I have a new Gigabyte Mobo with a Uli Chipset, and am having a
fucking hell of a time getting it to recognize my RME
Multiface... I don't know what exactly the problem is, but this
PC was working perfectly before, and the only variance is the
CPU & mobo... my last mobo was an Epox with a Via Chipset;
based on this experience, I would kinda tend to warn everyone
away from Uli - at least at this time.

Hi Neil,
Haven't used that board so couldn't comment. I have use the ASUS A8R-MVP
and it works great with UADs, Powercores, RME, Lynx or any cards I put
in it so far. Of course only 3 PCI slots are on the board but thats the
most you'll get on a current one. The other version of the MVP only have 2.

Hey Chris...
OK, check out this rant, and considering the timing of this
thread, it's pretty relevant:
I decided recently to upgrade my mobo & CPU, because I
purchased CubaseSX v3, and apparently that app is more CPU-
intensive than the v1.xx I was running (a couple of projects I
had going were pushing the limit already, but when I tried
running them in v3, they started to glitch & have playback
problems - you could see the CPU meter in the "VST Performance"
window, go up a little more than it had in v1.xx - apparently
just enough to cause problems). So I get a new mobo/CPU combo -
an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ sitting on a Gigabyte GA-K8U with a ULi
M1689 chipset.
I install the new stuff, and expect the usual - a few glitches,
a handful of reboots, and we're off & running, right? Nope.
This thing has been a nightmare from day one - lots of issues,
including getting stuck in a boot loop that took me half-dozen
attempts of having to boot into "safe" mode in order to undo,
and finally, getting stuck in another boot loop, at which point
I even brought it to a service tech - never had to do that
before... ended up having to wipe the hard drive clean,
reformat, and reinstall WinXP.
OK, so now it should be OK, right? I try to install the drivers
for my RME Multiface, and no luck, the PC is not recognizing it.
I e-mail Synthax (the folks that do RME support for the US),
and they tell me that it might be my card - which is an older
version and has been known on some systems to have problems -
but the good news is for $40 and a return of my card, I can get
a factory refurb which addresses these issues. So in the
meanwhile I decide to buy a new card, since I've been wanting
to go to 16 inputs anyway & I have two of the Multiface i/o
boxes.
I get the new card, install it, load the drivers, and after
several hours of trying every combination of possible drivers,
flash updates to the firmware, clearing out extraneous entries
in the ASIO portion of the system registry, and another e-mail
to Synthax just to make sure I'm not missing anything, I
FINALLY get it to work... what worked was to reinstall the
chipset drivers, THEN reinstall the RME drivers, then reboot.
Why the chipset drivers? I dunno, I just figured I'd try it.
I have major suspicions about this chipset by now, so why not
give that a shot?
So now we should be OK, right? It works, right? Nope, I install
CubaseSX v1, which you have to have residing on the PC before
you can install the v3 upgrade), install the update to v.1, and
that all works fine, USB key is recognized, etc... everything's
cool. Set a system restore point titled something like: "OMIGOD,
SX V1 IS WORKING!", and proceed to install CubaseSX v3...
everything's cool, USB license key is recognized, I open up a
project & it plays fine... open up another project, same thing,
everything's working (I'm missing some plugin's of course,
because I haven't reinstalled any of those yet) then all of a
sudden I get a glitch.... an error msg that spews out a bunch
of numbers, and I didn't have time to grab a pen & write it
down. Hmmm... SX won't re-open. OK, reboot. Now my USB License
Key isn't being recognized... and neither is the key for SX v1.
Shut down, cycle power, try again... same thing - neither
license key is being recognized. I try to reload the drivers
for the USB key, and the PC's not seeing it. ARRGH!
So, tonight I'm going to de-install SX v3, go back to the
system restore point where v1 was working, and see what I get,
but I am really suspicious of this Uli chipset now... what else
could be causing this with a clean installation of WinXP
sitting on the hard drive, and hardly any software installed
yet? Nothing that I can think of.
Makes me want to switch to a Mac & you-know-what.

Hi Neil,
I haven't seen anyone but you so far using this model board so far but I
assume you wanted to be a guinea pig for it..:)
It sounds to me like you more than like have a flaky motherboard which
may be just that board you have or a piece of hardware that just doesn't
like that motherboard i.e., Ram, hard drives, video card. Do you have at
least a 450 watt PS? Most all the new board need allot of juice. Are you
using an ATI X series video card?

Hi Gene,
Not to far sense they are close to the end of the silicons tolerance.
You might try a Operton 165 also they will even higher than the 3800.

It's a 600-watt power supply, so that shouldn't be a problem...
anyway, I finally got it to work... had to reload the USB
drivers this time, then reload the license control drivers.
I'm almost tempted to just go get a new mobo since this has
been so flaky from the start, but now that it's working, I'll
give it a shot for awhile & see if it's decided to settle into
some level of stability... I hope so, becasue with this kind of
work, we all know that the only thing worse than "slow"
is "unstable".

HI Neil,
If you do decide to get a new board I would suggest the A8R-MVP. Yes I
know it has ULI on it . We built appox 50 of theses so far and have had
no problems with them. I think maybe 1 or 2 bad boards which believe me
is really low.

Thanks, Chris, I'll kepp that one in mind if I decide to switch,
but all "seems" to be well at the moment, at least - I've been
mixing a few cuts, and no glitches, etc. The only weird thing
that's now happening is that I have to unplug & reinsert the
dongle if I turn off the computer - which before I didn't have
to do, but I dunno if that's amobo thing or a Syncrosoft newer
driver version thing.

HI Neil,
MOre than likely the board suffers from the same issue as some of the
NForce 3 and 4 boards. They have under powered USB ports that the
syncrosoft does not like. TRy pluggin it in the a powered hub and see if
it works right.

Hey Chris...
I had actually heard about that issue with some boards awhile
back - I do have a PCI card with 2 Firewire & 3 USB ports on it
laying around & was thinking about trying that, but then it
occurred to me that if low-powered USB ports were the issue,
then it's unlikely that my wireless network adaptor (for my DSL
connection) would be working properly, since that's strictly
USB-powered. I'm sure it takes more juice to run that than it
does to run a USB key, and I'm getting a full-strength signal
over DSL adaptor.
I think I'll live with it as it is unless it gets too
inconsistent or annoying. Now if I were Deej...

.....huh???.........whaaaa????........sorry, I've been remiss in my
attendance to this thread. I think it's the Uli chipset...........I mean,
after all, Uli is Mr. Behringer's first name. that should tell you
something.
