I'm desperate to get Paris up and running again. It was working great until
I got a new 20" widescreen LCD about 6 months ago...
The new display meant a new graphics card that could drive the native resolution
(1680x1050)... sounds simple.
First some background, my machine is a PIII-600E, 512MB RAM, Asus motherboard,
etc. Old beast really but more than adequate for my Paris needs (2 x EDS1000)
cause I primarily use the Paris DSP and not many plugs. Win98SE.
Problem: find an AGP card with Win98 drivers that can do 1680x1050. I bought
some Asus card with GeForce but it's HIGHLY unstable. Machine freezes (fresh
install of 98).
I could move to XP I guess, but them I'm up for more money than what the
machine is worth!
Or, I'd consider a whole new machine. But i'm so out of touch with paris
compatibility etc, and not even sure if there's still any manufacturers making
PC's with the right PCI voltages for the EDS cards? If there was a cheap
Dell I'd probably jump in, and give my PARIS a boost of a long life yet.
Other than PARIS, I've been using a MacBook running Ableton Live. Nice workflow
for fun projects.
So, am I dreaming or ? Worst case I could put my old graphics card back (a
G400) and run non-native resolution to the LCD :(

Some Aussie users have reported success with the Gigabyte K8Ns Ultra 939
mobo and an AMD 64 3600 CPU. I'm getting ready to test one of these with an
AMD 62 4800 x 2 processor and 3 x EDS cards. the voltage is compatible and
it would likely support your video card.
Here's an Aussie link.

I have e-mailed a couple of them tonight because I want another one of these
boards and they are no longer available in the US.
Don't give up hope mate.
Cheers,
Deej

Thanks DJ - I'm onto it now - none of the local computer shops sold this board
any longer when I tried last year!

Pete -
If you see some of my recent posts, you will see I am battling the
same thing. I picked up a pair of Acer 22" widescreens (also
1680x1050) here a month or so ago, and have been trying to get them to
work on either of my systems - my general purpose PC and my studio PC.
The first is running WinXP with a Matrox G400 card. I can manually
enter the 1680x1050@60Hz resolution, but there is a weird fuzziness to
the display. It's as if vertical bands of distortion occur about 1"
wide and spaced every 3 inches apart. Still things are readable, and
my ancient eyes have their own random fuzziness, so I am not spending
money to upgrade this card yet.
In the studio, I am running WinME for Paris and using a Matrox G450
card. I can't dial in the 1680x1050 resolution with the ME drivers, so
I settle for 1600x1024. Text is much fuzzier there, but the Paris
mixer and graphic components look pretty sweet. Also I have an Acer
19" normal LCD as the main display, so I just drag windows over there
if text legibility is an issue.
One benefit of the Matrox is using the Quickdesk virtual windows. I
have to dial in the Paris window placements each time I run this app,
but it is not too bad and you can easily set up each submix in its own
set of windows then hotkey around. Real BT-land!
FWIW, my current research indicate there are no obvious cards that
have current WinME/98 drivers and support the widescreen resolutions.
I even got the idea of trying to imbed a WinME virtual machine inside
a WinXP install and seeing if I could get full Paris support but have
the display work with WinXP drivers. However, I just don't have the
time right now to experiment with this.
Good luck with your efforts. Using Paris is like living the 90%
solution, so why should using these wonderful, new monitors be any
different.
