Hey boys and girls, when considering all the other places I could have taken
this, I always came back to "these guys pretty much tell it like it is." So
I am here for some evaluation of the kneejerk variety. I've had this notion
to set up for doing guitar tracks across the net but haven't been able,
until now, to approach it with any due constent infrastructure despite
having 20GB of server space. And before I do all that (okay, I confess, I
bought 4 domains - www.hotguitartracks.com, .net, .org, and .info - it was
cheap - 25 bucks for the first year - nothing hosted yet) I wanted to get
some feedback from the hood about the main ingredeint, the guitar playing,
styles, tones, etc.
Yeah, I know, your friends are almost always the wrong folks to ask but
which day was it that this group didn't collectively hold a high degree of
objectivity when the thread wasn't a political one? Well, this ain't
politics so I'm comfy soliciting your grumbles, applause and mediocre
fanfare so long as it does not include the words "suck" or "dribble" or
"awsome" or "great."
By no means is the sampling as broad as it could be and the presentation
here is on a lone, previously hidden page of an existing site which was
quickly mocked up in the wee hours of a sleepless AM two months ago.
No holds barred, no bars held... go at it... comments solicited without
construct.... directly to me or here on the group... I don't care so long as
it is informational and critical. My email is "mark" at the domain below.
http://www.avidrecording.com/audio.htm
Thanks in advance.
W. Mark Wilson
Oh, ps... ANY guitars you hear on these clips are me despite the focus of
the individual clips and please, please... no comments about my vocal chops
or I'll, I'll...I'll clip your toe nails really short. Some bass and keys
stuff on there too but not a focus.

I think that's a pretty good demo, FWIW.

Ditto. Little to criticize that you haven't already spotted yourself
(broader range of styles is always good).
You wanted critical input, so with that in mind I'm looking hard for
things to criticize - you might consider some "streetier" or
"grungier" sounds, ie the "less slick more sick" side of dirty geetars.
Signature oddball sounds can capture folks - got a baritone? A
Danelectro for jangle? Slide/Dobro? A ukelele? Something odd that
sticks in folks' minds and says "this guitarist over that guitarist"?
Good work.

Yeah, that makes sense. I've been doing internet tracks myself as a
bassist (on a smaller scale and mostly for local clients) for years now
and I'm probably going to kick it up a notch after January. Best of
both worlds; make money having fun making music... no clients
underfoot... open the studio door, pet the dog, have lunch with the
family...

Same concept here... it's usually a stereo file they've send me to cut
to (some folks have sent MIDI tracks; that can be various flavours of
hassle).
A drummer I've worked with for years is quite organized about this (he
does five or six internet sessions a week, some multi-song). After he
tracks he does a quick mix and sends the client an MP3, but with
spoiler beeps inserted. Once the client listens and signs off and the
PayPal's deposited, he ships the full-resolution tracks (mixing
optional and extra). http://www.e-studio-drummer.com/ if you're
interested.

That was AWSOME! it totally failed to suck, and was so great and mouth watering
I felt saliva starting to dribble down my chin!
Seriously, I was really impressed. There's no reason you shouldn't have an
online thing going. Thanks for posting that stuff, it kind of inspires me
to get a web presence up for the same thing.

From what I've heard, and from your online presence here, you'd be a
natural for it. All the ingredients are in place, and if your main
infrastructure costs (recording facility and hardware and instruments
etc) have already been absorbed, then the expenses needed to take it a
step further are trivial. It's mostly a time investment if you're
web-handy (if not, the market for web development's pretty competitive
nowadays) and from a business perspective the potential leverage it can
add to those previous investments is just phenomenal.
On a related side note - looking at this thread, I can't help but think
that a "PARIS collaborative project" might be a fun thing to take
another stab at some day. There's a formidable talent pool here.
[hehehe - I just had an image of a twisted-21st-century-update cover of
"See it My Way" as well and laughed :D]

Yes, that's pretty much what I thought.
It isn't "actual", it's "intent".
I must say, when I saw the name at first, I immediately thought of "Avid"
(Digi), so I can't have been the first, (or the last).
Have you had 'Top shelf" legal advice on this?

Two years plus and not a word from Digi. No top shelf legal advice. Just

An understanding of the law can come in very handy. You've seen this, I
suppose? Funny stuff.

Hi Mark,
I just got back home, saw your post and checked out your samples. You ask'd
us to be critical so don't even think for a minute that I'm diss'ing you.
This is some good music. New, exciting, authentic and more. I'm not a pro
studio engineer. I'm your average Joe, trying to make a go of performing
and recording at home. I favor rock and blues, pedal steel county and old
motown. Our tastes may not coincide. I do have good ears, but what I comment
on is my taste. You may have a need to cater to a specific audience or
customer.
So, with that said, hear is what I heard.
1st great performances on every sample. Nice recordings and mixing chops
too! Great variety.
Wonderful rhythms and patterns. Tight performances. Perfect stereo
assignments. Very open mix's. These are quality samples. The musical
genre sampling is superb. I dig your funk. Your classical is interesting.
Your gtr leads are excellent and your strumming is tight with the band. The
bass player and drummer groove well. Your musical samples capture me.
But, without further ado . . the other side:
Acoustic samples - nylon tone is totally real with perfect reverb, but, if
real critical, just a touch over. Steel string leans towards a more
electric than acoustic tonality. I'm not sure why. The lower strings and
middle register sound more electric than a sound hole tone. However, the
upper two strings sound real (B and E).
Bass samples - on the rockin' and funky tunes the bass is tight, clean, fat
and perfect in the mix. On the mellower stuff I think it could be a bit
rounder. You know, the type of sound you get with brand new set of round
wound strings. A clarity and fullness that surround you. On "aint" it
sounds like the snare is gated off too quickly.
Keyboard samples - B3 is awesome. I'm not a fan of that particular electric
piano keyboard patch on the lead. It's got a strange attack and to me feels
brittle. I hear it a lot in R&B and some jazz, but I still don't care if. I
feel as though a true piano patch would fit in the song just as well or
maybe something more in the lines of something Billy Preston or Ray Charles
might try.
Lead and Rhythm samples - Your mix's are very open. I feel as though you
have room to thicken the electric gtrs, both lead and rhythm. I also heard
this on the above samples too. Although everything is clean and clear, a bit
more low end would warm them up some and give them substance. And you are
playing great stuff. Your drums and bass sound huge. Great tone on the wah
in all instances and that's tough to do.
Vox - nice placement and levels. The background vox's really surround the
mix.
So that's it. My kneejerk reaction. Keep doing what you are doing. It's
great stuff.
Sincerely,
Wayne Carson

Wayne, my thoughts exactly on the acoustic and bass stuff. The truth about
those acoutstic and nylon clips is that a couple of years ago, frustrated
that despite haveng been asked for over 20 years "when are you going to do
your own album" I had never done one, I sat down on a Sunday afternoon in
the control room with a single SM57, an acoustic guitar belonging to a
friend, my nylon, nothing more than a coupe or three 8-bar phrases in my
head that I would gravitate toward when I would pick up an acoustic. I
wrote/recorded those tunes sitting in that chair in one day with almost no
attention paid to the computer running in the background, my playing
technique, mic position, mic selection or any of the usual clinical kinds of
things one does when recording. No punching, no doubling, no tempo maps,
none of that. Tracked bone dry, mixed bone dry, compression only, one
setting for every title. Mastered back to PAIRS through my old Ibanez
SDR1000 with one verb setting for the whole record. I had my first 500 CDs
within 7 days of beginning the project. In other words... didn't spend
any time on it. There are some 'embarrassments' on that thing but
interestingly, all my musically inclined cohorts like the realness of the
thing and threaten me when I use the words "remix" or "redo" so.... it is
what it is. And I agree with you totally about the sound.
Great comments on the bass stuff.... Peavy Cirrus and yes, I think it came
out a bit undefined but it was an artist call as to tone. In fact, all that
bass stuff was recut after the entire album was done. The band, IC3, lost
their basis mid-project at another studio. IC3 decided to recut bass tracks
and I got the call. Nothing like jacking up a house and trying to pour a
nice new smooth concrete foundation under it.
I got some more stuff I'll be putting on shortly... getting my site up and
trial running meantime.
Totally dig ALL your comments Wayne... exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks man! Mucho appreciato
