This is unbelievable. I have friends who did grad work at Va Tech and
probably
know staff there. It did seem like one of the safer campuses - Blacksburg
seems like a quiet, cool little mountain town, but I guess insanity knows
no bounds anymore.

I don't think anyone understands it, Aaron. We may learn that the shooter
had a history of mental problems. We may learn that alcohol and/or drugs
were involved. No, I don't understand how anyone can just randomly kill
people. I also don't understand why idiots, psychos, drunks, or drug
addicts need to have the right to bear this kind of arms.

I think we need to seriously change the way we raise our male children.

Sad, very sad.

" I think we need to seriously change the way we raise our male children. "

Sarah - I realize that the majority of shootings are probably male, but this
is a silly sexist thing to say - isn't it? I have no doubt that a girl could
do a similar thing. Our society gives us example after example of this
destructive behavior with guns (what else are guns for?) and women are no
exception to shootings or destruction.

There is also no guaranteed way to stop this kind of violence. Sad but true.
It is, unfortunately, one of the very high prices/possibilities that comes
with our liberties in the US (guns, guns rights, etc..). At very minimum, at
least this particular person won't cause further damage.

Here's my personal edit to your quote.... "I think we need to seriously
raise our children."

I know you have good interests at heart Sarah - hope you don't take offense
to my post.

Peace be to all the VT family.

rock on,
-Carl

Dammit Sarah, that's just like saying, after the next psycho kills her
children:

Oh, we need to raise our female children better...

I'm sorry, it is despicable to use this as an excuse to attack "men"....

I gotta call you on this one.

Oh, and let me say this on the gun issue.

Read this:

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/printer-friendly.asp?ARTIC LE_ID=55226

Now, how many of those poor dead people would have given anything,
anything to have had their own gun at the moment just before they
died?

Now, show me a proposal to take guns away from only criminals
and psychos and I will show you a thousand laws already on the books
that have all failed because psychos and criminals do not follow laws.

"Gun control" only applies to the good guys. The ones who would
have stood up and saved lives today. The ones that died because they
had no effective way to do so.

I'm not anti-gun, in fact, I own a gun, but guns have no place
in school, so unless you'd also pass a law that said concealed-
carry laws preempt school policy, then what you're saying would
be irrelevant in any case. Tragic as it is, the risk of
something like this happening once every fourty-something years
is much less than the risk of a bunch of students toting around
firearms & one guy seeing another guy hitting on his chick
on the way to study hall, and... hey, fucker, get away from my
girlfriend or I'll pop a cap in yo' ass"; "oh yeah, you just try
it & you'll hafta answer to my two buddies... Smith, and
Wesson", multiply that incident by the hundrends of times each
day in this country that something like that must happen (sans
guns) and and well, you figure out the potential stats.

What blows my mind is that this guy just starts lining people
up in a lecture hall & no handful of guys decided to rush him &
take him down? Fuck, if you know that you're not necessarily
next, but you're 5 or 6 down the row, what have you got to lose?

Er.... um... I think I'd feel better if guns weren't legal. Kinda like the
British... the penalty for being caught with a gun is something like a
mandatory 10 years in prison. I realize this will never be the case in the
US, and I'm not arguing to try and take people's guns away - I would,
however, just feel a bit better knowing that guns weren't around. That's
all. I also don't like mosquitos and brown recluse spiders.

I'll agree with Don on this one, Sarah. Besides, we've been
letting our boys cry tears since the flower-power era, so
who's to say how this kid was raised? Then there's always those
people who go bad no matter what you do - you think every
single person who's in prison for a serious crime had shitty
parents? What are the odds of that being the case?

England is a sh*tstorm of crime compared to the US. It is an
epidemic. BTW, crime went up immediately after they banned
guns many years ago and has gone up ever since.

You need to get your facts straight and stop blaming the tool instead
the evil f*ck who used it.

Well I always thought Countess Erzsébet Báthory was a little wacky. But for
favorite punishment, I have to go with the Marquise de Brinvilliers. She
was forced to drink sixteen pints of water, then she was beheaded and burned
at a stake. Maybe it’s just me but it seems gentleman mass murderers outnumber
the ladies about 10 to 1. Although I had a girlfriend once…

It's simply not the case. Concealed permit holders commit so
close to zero crime that they have to be considered some of the
most law-abiding people on the planet. Concealed carry permits
have lowered crime about 20% everywhere they have been tried.

The myth of people just "snapping" and waving guns around is not
factual.

Would you? Me neither. No one I know would do that, and criminals
and gang members do not apply for permits and usually break the law
by owning guns with a felony record anyway.

I'm with you on that one. Too many of us have been raised to be
what some woman thinks men should be and so are weak when we
need to be strong and brave. Women are no better at telling
men how to be men, then men have been at telling women how to
live for all these years.

In the world, there are sheep, there are wolves, and there are sheep
dogs. No one likes sheep dogs until you really, really need one...

I'm not offended in the least, but I don't think what I said was sexist.
I'm not blaming "men," in fact, I'm not really blaming anyone, except maybe
our culture for making violence cool. However, I don't think you can solve
a problem if you pretend that an obvious aspect of that problem doesn't
matter just because it pushes buttons.

Women aren't "better" than men, or vice versa. Men and women are "equal,"
but you may have noticed they are very different. One major difference
related to aggressive and combative behavior is testosterone, which a male
typically has 7 to 10 times as much of as a female. Testosterone levels
rise rapidly, sometimes drastically, with threat, anger, and competition.

Just as girls are taught about their special hormonal differences and
reproductive cycles, boys should be taught about this special aspect of
their physiology, and the emotions it can produce. Instead of thwarting
their natural aggression and energy, we should teach them to channel it into
creative, constructive activity. We should also teach them that empathy and
compassion are not "gay," and that having brain and a heart are more
important than having "balls," so to speak. I bet most of the men here
avoided violent behavior in part when they were growing up by beating the
shit out of drums or guitars instead of other guys.

Of course we need to discourage violence in all our children, but it's a
bigger problem among boys, and I think some special attention is needed
there. Does this make sense?

Oh gimme a break. I'm not attacking "men," I'm attacking a culture that
makes heros of killers.

I love men. I think I have more male friends than female. If I hated men,
instead of hanging around here all the time, I'd be exchanging recipes and
hair tips over at iVillage.com. (See? Now that was a sexist remark).

It's just a fact . . . the problem of human violence is primarily a problem
among the males of the species. What's wrong with recognizing that and
trying to understand it and change it? I don't believe men are "bad" or
inferior.

Now don't make be come over there and kick your ass nine ways t' sunday. :)

Unless you are a child, huh? Then it is "women" you are in danger of..
Oh, and lesbians, those most female of people, according to many feminists,
have the highest partner abuse on the planet...

It's bull. All of it.

Men are also most likely the ones to stand up and stop the killer.
You are reducing pure, poisonous evil to gender and biochemistry
Making young men into a womans version of themselves is not the
solution. Teaching men to cry more??? What?

Unbelievable.

The problem is evil, not how we raise men...

And there you have it. A nearly complete version of a "man" as
determined by women... One problem, it's all wrong.

I avoided violence, as my daughter is, by years and years of martial
arts training. Oh, and shooting... Oh, and my relationship with Jesus
Christ.

In short, by becoming a better man, not a womans version of one.
Ironic huh?

Traditional martial artists are the least violent people on the planet,
as are shooters. As were the real people of the old west, not the
Hollywood lie that has replaced them.

Well, in order to escape that, you'd need to become part of
some entirely diffeent species. Prior to our current, "evil",
modern culture even being on the horizon, the ONLY heroes were
killers - you didn't become leader of the tribe or a kingdom or
the Roman Empire a Mongol Horde if you didn't "kill your way
there" one way or the other, either by proving your self in
battle, or murdering the hated bastard that was in your way,
earning some applause & respect for awhile, until YOU became
the bastard & someone killed you LOL!

Yeah, pity our modern society that produces pop art that
glorifies guys that protect the weak, whether it's with mad
kung-fu skilz or guns... we'd be much better off without all
the influences our society produces, like comic books, movies,
running water and vaccines.

We teach Jesus, Karate and Guns

It takes bibles and carbines
to help form their young minds.
And we throw in a Black-Belt for fun.

Just kidding.

When the world has failed us again
we teach kindness to women and men
It takes Bibles and virtue
to make a good life
and respect will rub off on our friends.

Some of y'all might be surprised by this, but I'm mostly with Don on this
one. I have a concealed carry permit (though I don't carry all that often)
and if I ever had daughters they'd be little Annie Oakleys with their own
pistol as soon as they could legally carry and any asshole who tried to hurt
them would get one through the brain. The asymmetry of rape and abuse visited
upon women is in large part simply that they can't physically defend themselves.
A small clip 9 mm in her purse levels that playing field in a hurry.

Hmmmmm........ there seems to be a few online training films that specialize

I wouldn't mind if idiots, psychos, drunks, or drug addicts didn't have the
right to bear these kind of arms.......and in the process of disarming these
folks we would probably cull a few of them from the population, along with
quite a few of the "cullors". I think it would be pretty easy to identify
the drug addicts and drunks and we should legalize them in order to make all
of these folks more identifyable. If we did, that would probably cover about
40% of our national population (a conservative estimate....sorry, for the

which often happens when they are drunk and/or on drugs. so this would
accellerate the process .........Yeah!!! that's the ticket!!!............and

But this ignores the fact that tens of millions, maybe hundreds of millions,
of people play violent video games and don't shoot anyone. And also doesn't
explain the billions of people who are occasional users of drugs, ranging
from caffeine to chewing coca leaves to ecstasy to heroin, and live normal,
well adjusted lives, again without shooting anyone. And, to go further, how
is it that the Romans could enjoy entertainments that other ancient societies
(far more tolerant of blood and gore than we are) found so disturbing they
would be physically ill at performances?

It's not video games or pot smoking that's the problem. The problem is a
tiny, tiny, microscopic, so small you need a societal electron microscope
to see them group of people are really messed up. They're tough to identify,
and no amount of denying the rest of us who aren't nuts access to things
we may enjoy (video games, drugs, guns) will change that. So we need to get
better at identifying those people.

For example, the main thing that stopped copycat Columbine events was that
kids started telling parents and school officials when they thought another
kid might be about to go off the deep end. In essence, they were 'human intelligence'
for the authorities.

In the same way 'human intelligence' operatives are the best defense against
terrorism, other random acts of violence, suicides, and a lot of other things.
Banning shampoo on airplanes, in case you're wondering, is not.

Well....shit!!!.....Thad, I didn't say that we should ban video games now
did I? If you've ever paid attention to the bottom line of any of my
environmental rants, it always comes down to global population control. Even
the tiniest bit of help we can get, from video games and from legalizing
drugs in order to identify the latent psychos, works for me..........and if
they just happen to get wasted during the *disarmament process*, well, shit
happens now doesn't it???.....and I used to have a carry permit when I lived
in Texas. Street violence was significantly reduced once these became legal.
Up here in Colorado, people just do it anyway (though I probably should get
one here as well) ................. but I still get dibs on being able to
make the call on who's an idiot.

Here's one look at how concealed carry affected crime statistics for a
three year period:

http://www.startribune.com/462/story/1089112.html

"Between 2002, the year before the law was changed, and 2005, the most
recent year for which state figures are available, Minnesota's violent
crime rose 13 percent.

The 174 crimes committed by permit holders, according to a recent state
report, represent only a tiny fraction of the surge, which experts say
owes more to demographic trends and gangs.

Only 23 of the crimes by permit holders involved a pistol.

Meanwhile, the single "lawful and justifiable" use of a firearm reported
among Minnesota's 42,189 permit holders over the past four years did not
involve self-defense or efforts to stop a crime, but rather a Wabasha
County man who drew complaints about target shooting near someone's
property but faced no charges.

"There was an awful lot of hype on both sides before the law passed,"
said state Public Safety Commissioner Michael Campion. "It just hasn't
materialized. I never believed there'd be a decrease in crime because
people carry guns."

Sheriffs, who are issuing hundreds of new handgun permits each month,
agree that the law's impact on public safety, which ignited intense
debate for years leading up to its passage, has been negligible."

Cheers,
-Jamie

So - guns *are* banned in England? Then... didn't I have my facts straight?
I simply said that *I* would certainly feel better without guns around.
Don't put words into my mouth man.

Deal. You get to decide who we get rid of for being and idiot, I get to decide
who we bump off for being an asshole. I believe that will leave you and Amy
(and Crash) as the new Adam and Eve (and Fido) 'cause I'm sure no idiot but

Nobody carries a gun because it's statistically a smart thing to do. At least
if they're being honest with themselves they aren't. In fact, we're far more
likely to hurt/kill ourselves or a family member with it than a threatening
stranger. We carry because in the incredibly unlikely event we need one at
one point in our lives--probably a 4-5 standard deviation event--we have
it, and that unlikely event usually involves the carrier's imminent death.
Also, there are ways to mitigate the risk to selves and others, not eliminate,
but mitigate.

If one of those kids at VA Tech were carrying there might have been far fewer
killed.

Well OK then. I'm glad we've arrived a a logical, sane solution to all of
this. I do think that a few intelligent topless dancers should be spared
though.

Including the one I'm taking to see Son Volt tomorrow night in NYC? Who also
works as a bank teller and regularly causes multi-car pileups in Queens?
Who is obviously insane, blind, or both?

As the only Blacksburg (former) Paris user I thought I'd chime in here.

Yes thankfully my immediate family and close friends are all fine. But as
you can imagine the community is shocked beyond belief. Blacksburg is, as
many others have said in interviews, a small peaceful and safe place in which
to live. And now this...

This massacre was very very close to home ... It is amazing that not only
did this happen here in Blacksburg and at VT. But the shootings began on
the 4th floor of AJ .. the very floor where my old band buddies Jim, Dwight
and I lived and jammed back in '79-80.

My daughter Sammie is classmates with one of Kevin Granata's kids. Everyone
here knows someone personally effected by this senseless act of violence
.

Jamie Bishop, the German professor shot down was one of us. In addition to
teaching German, he was a technology guy, and an budding audio engineer.
Check out his website: http://www.memory39.com/

Unfortunately, way before all the facts are in, many in the media are trying
to blame VT Administration and police over not warning students for two hours,
yada yada... Maybe! but can't the debate on that and gun control, etc. wait
for the victims to all be identified, and families notified?

I have been extremely impressed with the actions, and interviews with all
the VT students and faculty. They are (for now) only blaming the shooter,
even with the reporters pressing them to slam the VT police and president.
VT students have classy attitudes and all instinctively seem to be on the
same page without being told what to say. The pride and unity seen weekly
in Lane Stadium runs deeper than I ever imagined. Check out the remarkable
Hokie experience of 70 thousand Hokies jumping in unison to Metallica's "Enter
the Sandman"!

As Nikki Giovanni just said" We are the Hokies and we will prevail."

Peace,
Steve
