Hey, I have this older Olympus digital voice recorder that
cannot download the audio as a file, sooo, using it for
interview transcriptions is a royal pain.

Then I had a flash of insight! (I get those every 14 months)

Use Garage Band to transcribe! Now I don't know about you,
but I cannot type fast enough to keep up with a conversation,
and this article I am working on is a long interview. A little
voice recorder will sooner or later lose your place and then you
are in hell finding it again, so I dumped the whole thing into
Garage Band (used 4 tracks becuse GB, like a certain other
app we know, does not like 1.5 hour tracks!) and simply used
GB to play back the interview. Worked pretty dang well for
a free app.

Now, if I could just find a transcription app... One that you
can import an audio file into and it will spit out text...

Is there such a thing?

Yes there is, but I can't remember the name of it. I think it's a shareware
app. Do a search for mac audio apps and start reading you'll find it.

Hey Don
Sounds like you don't, but if you DID have a PC laying around you might find
an older version of Dragon, install it on the PC and put the mic up to the
speaker from which GB is speaking ...so to speak. Dragon has to "learn" the
way the operator speaks, inflections etc.. but once it is able to do this,
it may be able to work from a speaker source rather than a human-speaking
source. I do alot of report writing in my biz and I once had this fantasy
of recording the words onto a dictophone -Olympus style thingy and then
letting that dictate into a mic hooked up to Dragon. Don't know if this
would work, but seems it should.

Could be worth a try. What would be coolest is an app
that could translate the audio file to text without playing
it in real time.

Probably doesn't exist.

That was my next question. Man.the time this would save me is incalculable.
Get a little hand held digital recorder.dictate your stuff to this and
upload separate files to a folder on your HD.........then you could just go
to Vegas and when you got back.......

I watched Dragon Preferred working with a drop folder. The results were excellent,
even getting some homophones correct. I was quite impressed. I almost bought
it even though I have absolutely no use for it!

What no one makes is an app that you can just drop an audio file onto
and text comes out...
