I was just pondering renaming the groups. We seem to have two active groups
now, so I was thinking...
(*) Rename the main group to Music Technology - EMUEnsoniqPARIS
(*) Rename the "General" group to "Paris Social Club - EMUEnsoniqPARIS"
....or something like that.
Or not. What do you guys think? Might help ensure that we stay on music stuff
on the main group, as well as encourage some more general social chit chat
on the other group.
That was my thinking anyhow.
Cheers,
Kim.
Cheers,
Kim.

Hey DC -
Have a look at these options and see if they do it for you. They have the
advantage of being free (which is a good thing because some things may be
coming up on the horizon that PARIS users just might want to *cough* reserve
their cash for), feature pretty rich feature sets, good access control
including moderation, and one-click installation.
PHPBB: http://www.phpbb.com/
PunBB: http://punbb.informer.com/
bbPress: http://bbpress.org/
Here's a feature that could be added easily if people were interested in
reviving the old chats:
PhpFreeChat http://www.phpfreechat.net/
The resources nowadays are going nuts. Free on my server is Drupal,
Wordpress, Joomla, photogalleries, chats, forums, calendar, webmail servers,
survey tools and a ton of other things, none of which require a particularly
high degree of tech savvy or maintenance.

Man, you are way ahead of me on this stuff, so I can't comment.
I would sure like to see us on a more practical app though.
And yes... we hope something will be forthcoming in Pareee
SOON
did I say that? did I say SOON? Ok, shoot me, go ahead...

Man, those do look fantastic.
What has always held us back has been NNTP with a web client attached. Lots
of users here still use NNTP.
It is also possible to reconfigure how the web interface here works to an
extent.
I'd love more features on the web side though. Indeed I'd be really happy
if we were hosted in more than one place, but it's linking the two together
which is the issue. Indeed if other options were around which support both
NNTP and web then we could even have two servers running, as they could use
NNTP to hang off each other.
Cheers,
Kim.

Hmmmm - not that I know much about NNTP, but - how would something like this
fit?

At a glance it's perfect. I'd have to spend a few minutes reading up, but
I'm assuming that you'd be able to choose an NNTP server which wasn't actually
part of Usenet. We're effectively our own mini-usenet, but I can't see why
it wouldn't be possible to run that thing, and hang it off this server, which
would give us:
(*) Two web interfaces & two NNTP servers
(*) Redundancy
Or I could update here really, but I'm loathed to tough the thing given it
seems to just keep working.
Which reminds me, I'd best go run a backup. :o)
Cheers,
Kim.

I'll keep researching and post what I find - maybe there's a perfect
solution out there.
My my my - the features are getting very cool nowadays.

I thought we went around about this in the past, and the majority liked the
NG the way it is. Kim, I think it's fine the way it is, but your driving
the bus, so...

I think what Kim is talking about is to have *both* so those that prefer the
NG can post to the NG, those that prefer web-based can post to the BB, and
posts to either show up in both - rather like what exists now, but far more
refined and structured and feature-enriched on the web end.
There's technology that could make that a possibility now. That could be the
best of both worlds, to my way of thinking.

I'd ideally like to see the current setup stay, but with additions. I'm not
adverse to alternatives, and a wider Paris community that's not simply revolving
around this single portal. There's heaps of websites dedicated to C64. I
don't think we can probably generate loads more chat simply from better technology,
but there has long been talk that the web interface isn't a fave with some.
The main thing holding back change has been:
(*) Many prefer NNTP, which I understand and appreciate, and there are few
options which do both NNTP and web.
(*) Some prefer this interface.
If we can find an app which has a better web gui but also NNTP support and
is free, we can hang it off this group. People can continue to use this portal
if they wish, via either web or NNTP, while some could hang off the mirror
site, via either the new web gui or NNTP. Posts would transfer automatically
between the two and, depending upon the configuration, probably could be
up on both groups seconds after the post was made. Hence we'd have everything
we currently have, as well as a new web GUI and a second server offsite.
If a server goes down you simply use the other URL. Indeed we could set it
up so that there are multiple IP resolutions on the group URL and hence your
machine would switch servers automatically if one server went offline.
Indeed you could even do that with the web interfaces. You'd have two URL's,
one for each, but if the IP couldn't be resolved it would just point you
at the other server. Hence NNTP users wouldn't even know if a BOX went down,
and web users would simply be automatically switched to their non-preferred
web GUI if their preferred GUI went offline.
(*) No Interruption of service
(*) Complete backup of posts if either server goes down
(*) Two web and two NNTP hosts to choose from
(*) Automatic transfer of posts between all access points within seconds.
This is all if we can find the right software, but the stuff we're currently
running can do most of this on its own so long as we find something which
has both a better web gui as well as NNTP support.
Then we simply need a host. There are options. We could rent a machine somewhere
which is maintained, as that can be cheapish. Or somebody, perhaps Kerry,
might have access to a host machine. Also, I have a backup machine here already
which could be reloaded with different software and possibly do all we're
looking at here, but we'd still only have a single internet connection.
But this thread, in fact, was started to talk about simply changing the titles
on some of the group headings to better represent their usage so that people
know what to expect and where to go for tech support if that's all they want.
Cheers,
Kim.
