All,
I am in the middle of making my studio console and am
building a sound proof computer compartment into it.
I was wondering where I can purchase the foam that needs to line
the enclosure. I need something about 1/4 inch thick for the
ventalation maze, but something thicker could go in the main
compartment.
OH yeah.... Cheap please...

Dave, that stuff has no noise-suppressive qualitites - it's
just small pieces of scrap foam barely held together with one
another.
Brandon, try a craft store for foam rubber, like Hobby Lobby or
the equivalent type of store in your area. If you can't find
raw foam, look for something like plain table placemats with a
foam rubber backing & you can just cut 'em to size (made plain
so you can paint your own designs on them... you know, the
typical crafts store kind of base materials) my ex mom-in-law
was into that sort of thing, so I know they carry materials of
that nature. I also noticed one time that they have polished
brass tubing of a size & thickness suitable to make an LDC tube
mic body out of, so maybe one day....! lol
Mind what Deej said about the heat, though. Hope that vent maze
allows enough air flow.

True, but closed cell foam rubber won't have much either... In a
pinch, a person could probably use short pile carpet for a similar effect.

No the sides do not open.
I will might actually have two comps side by side in the case which will
leave no room for getting in and out quickly. I was going to put my audio
comp and my internet comp in there, but to reduce heat build up I should
only put the audio comp in there. I don't usually surf the internet while
I am recording anyway.
However, I do use a KVM switcher and will have to get some extensions to
make that work. That will leave room to get in and out.
Also, I am very concerned about dust build up on the insulation.
I guess regular maintenance will be required.

Would there be any benefit to making a plexiglass door?
Cosmetically I would like to put a wooden door, but thought
I should ask if there was something I am over looking. I got those cool glow
led fans that I wont be able to see. Other than that I can't think of a reason
to go thru the trouble of a plexiglass door. Will plexigalss disipate heat
better than the wooden door?

Unfortunately, the case is already built and that is not an option.
I am just going to put my audio comp in the enclosure so I will be able to
get to it no problem. I will pull the door off of the case and lay it on
its side so the heat raises straight up from the MB. I bought some case fans
that I will be installing in the enclosure with there own power supply. I
will be using 1"thick standard foam for the inside of the enclosure and the
exhaust maze.

The biggest caveat or potential danger with common store bought
foams to be used as sound attenuation
- Fire -
You need to think about fire retardant spray or treatment, whether
on you walls or inside a closed box.
