If you guys know of better and/or less expensive products please tell me.

I have a usb mouse, keyboard and midi patchbay.
These all need a 25'-40' run. I also plan to eventually
run 4 DVI about the same distance.

These are the products I'm looking at for usb:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-det ails.asp?EdpNo=2893288&CatId=444

or if that won't be stable, this is lots more money:
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=2218

These are the long run DVI products:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-det ails.asp?EdpNo=2815509&CatId=79

or:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-det ails.asp?EdpNo=1643055&CatId=1163

I was hoping for a less expensive alternative. My existing USB extension
($30) is suspect. I lose
my midi patchbay within Cubase at least once in an 4-8 hour session. Often
times the computer
locks up too.

Any other ideas folks?
Tom

Tom,

Not sure what you're using right now. I use these.

http://reviews.cnet.com/networking-and-wi-fi/bafo-usb-2-0/45 05-3243_7-30613791.html

I've never had a problem with them. I have daisy chained 2 of them along
with a 15' USB2.0 non active extender and it worked fine to get a Frontier
Alphatrack happening about 45 feet from my computer in my tracking area.

Hey Deej,

That looks simular to what I've been using with less success.
Maybe mine isn't USB 2.0? I bought it about one year ago.
I'll have to check. Maybe that's the problem.

Maybe my problems aren't USB related but wireless
USB key/mouse related?

Thanks,
Tom

Active USB "repeater cables" work great, even when daisy chained. we are
using 30' (two cables) for several things with great success.

Hi David,

I think that's what I'm using here now with my
Midi Patchbay. Maybe the mistake I am
making is using only one repeater then a regular USB
cable attached to that. I'll get another and see if
that doesn't solve my problem.

I read that USB 2.0 shouldn't work with repeaters.
Everyone says it does though.

Good info!

Tom

If you get a USB2 rated repeater you should be fine. These are the ones
we are using:

http://sewelldirect.com/Gefen-Active-USB-2-16-ft-Cable.asp

Not from that supplier mind you, that's just the first link google
turned up.

USB extension.....Try this. I have them at work to use on audio amps so I
get feedback from some USB intelligent amps as far as 1/4" (maybe more) away
from my office. I've just begun the testing phase, but they seem to do just
what they say they do.

http://www.iogear.com/product/GUIP201/

Haven't tried this, looks cool and I've had pretty stable products from this
company so far.

Doesn't say.. are you 'sure' these are USB 2.0 and are they using TCP
ethernet or just using that connector (RJ45) type? I might also question
latency on these, since you're talking about running a hardware app through
them that is definitely sensitive to that kind of problem.

Same thing as above... check compliance and latency specs. I would say this
to 'any' device you insert in your path.

Less expensive usually means more hassle I've found. Consider what is your
time worth, and base your decisions on taking chances or not. Only you know
that answer bro :)

Jeez... multitasking ...

1/4 *MILE* !! We have a 1/2 mile deep and about 3/4 mile wide facility.
Old habits, talking audio, typing that connector... duh...
I can reach the pre and routing stage with Soundweb, however the amps
require a slightly different method so I'm improvising. It's all going to be
CDi or XTi, and every building will be a Venue on the main network if I have
my way about it.

We've had mixed success with the XTi... lots of failures. Also, the DSP
is after the input level controls, so the noise floor of the DSP (which
is substantial) can't be attenuated.

Most of what we're using it for is not musical production, it's paging in
buildings/barns so it works out fine for that. The CDi-1000 is the model
most used at this point. I've seen some failures here on that but it's
mainly due to being subjected to a nasty environment and heat. The K1's and
K2's have been pretty solid, but have no USB control. They're getting up
there in age though, so what would you recommend as a replacement there that
has USB interface feedback and control? Those are mostly in our main
pavilion and are a music production setting. (
http://www.exposquare.com/es/facilities/pavilion.asp )

The XTi I've had personal experience with using it for my live band, and
it's been pretty bullet proof so far. But then again, a noisy club wouldn't
show much noise floor issue really.
It's good to know though that they have that issue so I won't try to use
them in a more critical environment.

I'm actually in a similar dilemma. Unfortunately, I need just the box
without any cabling attached. Does anyone know of such a product?

I'd hate to have to open up a wall - really hate!!

If you have a laptop with wireless, you might be able to use a wireless
router and remote desktop into your paris box. Don't know enough about your
situation to say.
