OT: Mac networking hardware [message #93180]

Hey guys,

I volunteer at a neighborhood charity that teaches kids how to read. This
is the most selfish volunteering in the world, because I live in a ghetto
and I hope the kids learn to read, go to college, and don't mug me. Anyway,
they had an iMac donated to them. It's a 'looks like a lamp' iMac, with a
round bass and a swivel kinda display thing. It has no wireless card installed.
Are there decent 802.11 USB devices with Mac drivers? If so, which ones?
If not, how do I make it wireless capable short of an ethernet -> 802.11
box?

Google "imac airport card" - it looks like there are some possibilities.

You could also check into a USB-based wireless adapter.

Yes, you'll either need to use a usb wifi adapter, or pony up the
premium $$$$ for an original Airport card.

When Apple upgraded from the Airport (802.11b) to the Airport Extreme
(802.11g) cards, they simply stopped producing the original cards.
Cold. As a result, they are now worth their weight in platinum on
ebay. I know - I tried to find one for a friend's G4 that I was
upgrading. I paid more than a new Extreme card for a used Airport
card....

The slots are not backwards-compatible. You cannot put an original
card in an Extreme slot, and you cannot put an Extreme card into an
original Airport slot. Yes, it's annoying as hell.
