Anandtech puts two quad cores inside a Mac and reports performance v. normal
Core Duos.

I'm a littl surprised this worked at all. There's also comparisons to a 'benchmark'
XP system which finds interesting results.
Surprise surprise, mulitithreaded 3D tests show _by far_ the biggest performance
boost. Those apps work a lot like a well written audio app. Hmmmm . . .

This may be the first *really* good reason I've heard for even considering a
new Mac. I think what I like about it the most is that it is changing.the
Mac.

Nice. Bring 'em on!
I'll use two processor cores to run Logic with a gazillion plugins, two
to render animations, two to compress video for HD-DVD or BluRay, and
um, the last two to cook something tasty for lunch...

I will guarantee you that by the time that the Cloverton quads are available
to the public, Apple will have found a way to prevent the user from
upgrading the machine themselves and will likely have a quad version that
will cost more $$ than it would cost for the end user to buy the Clovertons,
install them and then sell the older CPU's to recoup his costs.
Hide an watch. They have been taking Digidesign lessons for year.

You may be right, Deej. Let's see what they do. It would be nice if they
didn't put any road blocks up to what's already seemingly possible.
My guess is if replacing the CPU works now, it'll work pretty much the
same way later - but the new machines out at that time might be more
optimized for the new chips. Just for fun I'll put a beer on that if yer
willin'.
What the heck, next time you're in Denver I'll buy you a beer anyway. :^)
How Apple handles CPU upgrades this time around won't affect me. I'm
fine with my dual G5. The current Intel towers, while very nice, don't
offer that much more than what I've already been using for the last
couple of years.
But 8 cores might make it worth considering a new box next year. Not for
audio, my system already has plenty horsepower for that, but for
animation and possible 2K or even 4K video editing/compositing.

Well I wouldn't put it past them, but let's hide and watch. We've been able
to upgrade Apple CPU's for ever. They haven't necessarily been "pin for pin
compatible"swap CPU's, but third party companies have offered upgrades for
as long as I can remember. Maybe Apple will surprise us. I'm not gonna hold
my breath, but you never know. The quad cores should be out by the time I'm
looking to move up anyway! ;>)

I saw that they did this on anandtech. Are quad core CPU's now available to
the general public? My thought was that if the Quad'ws aren't yet available,
that Apple will find a way between now and then to bugger this up to the
point that it won't be possible unless they are purchased from Apple.
Hope I'm wrong.

SAMPLES, I SAID SAMPLES :-) The big sites get them. It's one of the perks
when you life consists of running benchmark suites non-stop.

HI Chuck,
Yes engineers samples go out to review site first then out to vendors.
WE should be getting some in a 2 or 3 weeks I think. I believe they will
start to be ready available as long as there are no issues along the way
probably Oct/November.
Biggest issues for Xeons still are still heat and noise. Allot lest than
they used to be but for some reason still uses that stupid 604 based
socket design even thought the chips could easily use the 775 one like
the P4 and Conroe. Hardly anyone makes 3rd party CPU heat sinks so it is
very difficult and more expensive trying to make them quiet.
The Opterons are very easy to get quiet heat sinks for because they use
the same socket as the x2.
