I need (rather badly) to do an update of the newsgroup website. Those who
visit via the website may well have noticed the (hopelessly outdated) list
of Paris links on the site.
I'd like to get a list of all the Paris sites that are about. I beleive about
half the ones already listed are still working. I'm pretty sure I've heard
a couple thrown around on the group here that I don't have up there however.
So, I'd be really greatful if some people could name all the sites that are
out there, which no doubt many of you have stashed in your bookmarks. Also,
anybody who has their own little archives and wants to share, now's the time.
:o)
Time to get stuff in some kind of order around here. ;o)

Here are some conceptual ideas for the Paris News Group. Let me know what
you guys think.
The Paris assets page
Things that are missing:
A dedicated file page, with files like BT's SMPTE file, Deej's setup, file,
or direct links to Chuck's Plugin page. The guy that comes on the NG for
the first time three months from now, will miss out because he won't know
that they even exist. If he found them, his next question would be how to
install them, a page would come in handy for this and similar things like
this, were additional instruction are needed.
How to cook in Paris!
Paris recipes, tips and tricks. Have each guy that wants to, list their favorite
and most useful tip or trick. There are subjects that could be covered better,
like free form mode, or automation, etc. Recipes, for example, a recipe
for your favorite way to record electric bass with Paris. List things like
equipment used, settings, type of strings used, mic placement, materials
used such as wind screen or packing blankets, and where you got them.
Paris Directory
In stead of having more web pages and our personal information floating around
in cyber space, that can easily be sniffed, have a down loadable pdf or Word
document that would have a bio with contact information, our interest, what
instruments we play, etc. This could be set up in a standardized templet
form.
The Paris Players Directory
An idea that kind of piggybacks the Directory idea, it would be a Paris Players
Directory. The directory would list what instruments you play, what style
or genera of music. It would be a directory of volunteer musicians that
would be willing to play on up to three tracks for free or for one dollar.
This would be like having a community of hired guns that could spice up
your tracks. If the track is used, you would just agree to give acknowledgment
for the track. If a song or work actually sold nationally, you would still
get performance royalties. It could be worked out. We would all get to
know each other even better.
It is fast and easy to send files direct via Instant Messaging software.
so shooting Paris project file across the net would be easy. We could pay
pal each other, or what ever. Again this could be set up in a templet. All
of us have some kind of studio, and all of us have some kind of talent, lets
utilize it! This would work kind of like Deej's cyber band idea. Together
we could create great music that we could have never created alone.

then improving from there, but while we're on it...

shoot them to me...

Gee, How much space do you think I have? ;o) Seriously, I think this is better
to be covered by things like John's Paris NG archives: http://kfocus.com/paris/
or Steve the art guy's page. Everyone has a different setup, so while DJ's
setup is extremely interesting, his isn't the only setup of interest...
....he just talks the most. ;o)

that is difficult, as you never know where a given user may go wrong. Don't
suppose you feel like writing a graphical tutorial to put with them? A PDF
perhaps?

This is more down the line of what Doug W's ParisFaq's is about than my NG
site. I guess FAQ's is kinda tips and tricks. It's hard because I see what
you're getting at, yet in a way this stuff is out there, it's just spread
out. The really hard thing is that everybody's priority on what is a handy
tip or trick is different. In a very real way, Doug W has listed his priorities
on his site, John on his, and Steve the art guy on his. It's not likely that
there's ever going to be a site where a person can go which just has everything
a man needs, because everybody needs different stuff.
Info on how to get a given sound could be handy, though it's usefulness is
subject to what gear a person has. I'm not keen to go this far in the immediate
future with my site though. Sounds like a lot of work. ;o)

IIRC the Paris Directory didn't go as well as hoped, largely not because
of the format, but because people didn't bother to or weren't intereted in
submitting. Unfortunate, but I must confess I was guilty myself...
In any case I know search engines are capable of searching PDFs and DOCs.
Not sure what the spammers use, but I suspect they can too.

Actually, seriously, you have a lot of ideas in here overall. The Paris community
does appear to be slowly but surely shrinking. You have a lot of ideas, and
I'm sure many of them would be appreciated were you to put something together.

for many years to come, but we're all keen to see new additions. :o) And
I'll happily link to anything that you create that's Paris related.

Hey Kim,
I set up an area on one of my sites to host larger files any PARIS people
might need to make available on the web. My idea was to give people who had
no other option a way to let others download complete songs, mic/pre
shootout files, etc. If anyone has larger files they want to share over the
web, I'll be glad to set them up. I've got a ton of unused space and it's a
moderately fast host. Anyway, here it is:

I was thinking about posting Deej's Word file or a link to his Word file
about his set up. That shouldn't take up too much space. He has to keep
posting this info about every two months when somebody asks about it.

That's the problem. A new guy won't know where to look, I'm not sure where
to look for stuff sometimes. Maybe a brief on where to look. If there was
a way to pull it all together???

I'd still like to be able to check out what other people have cooked up.
It's like college, you didn't need everything there, but the overall knowledge
helps you out in what ever you do. This my be too hard to do, though.

It was vary out dated, and I think most people didn't know about it or where
to look for it.

I think it would be a lot harder to data mine a pdf file. Maybe we could
go under ground with this file and distribute it among us directly with out
posting it. This file would be voluntary anyway.

well I wasn't just thinking of Paris files, but it would make us more compatible
with each other.
I have been thinking about doing this as a business, and I intend to do so
in time. Making it a profitable business model is a whole other story.
I thought it would be something that would help all of us out at one time
or another. I was thinking UP to 3 free tracks to get started, you could
pay for the track you use maybe, and if somebody wanted more they could pay
for more based on somebody's set rate. It would be great to be able to choose
from a pool of talent. I'll bet there are some great players here. The
concept of having a rock song that has something missing and putting it out
to five different players, and having the track come back with something
that fits so well. Something that you have just never thought of. Have
a jazz guitarist lay down a track on your funk project. Michael Jackson
did this kind of thing on the song "Beat it" when he had Eddie Van Halen
a rock guitarist, lay down the guitar tracks.
This could lead to work and income for our studios. As an example, I write
all kinds of music, If I wrote a country song, but I don't play fiddle, I
could look in the Directory for somebody that has it in their profile. So
say somebody in CO.; ) has a hot fiddle player that he works with, I could
send him the tracks with a keyboard melody of basically how I want the fiddle
part to go. The experienced fiddle player could play the melody and fill
in the nooks and crannies. That could change the whole dynamic of the song.
The best part, everybody would get paid. This could also showcase our talents
as players and engineers.

I know basic HTML and Dreamweaver. I would call myself a neophyte, but stick
around, I'll get smarter! Yes, I would be glad to help in any way, time
is my only problem, so it may be a little slow getting things done.

Great idea's (no pun) etc... Your right about finding the information out
there, it's pretty scattered. I just setup a new Paris user over the weekend
(a friend I found hardware etc for) and pointed him to the stuff on the web
but if I did not know him he would never have found it.... now he's another
happy Paris user...

What's your connection like?
There's a service called yousendit which allows sending of files up to 1
gig in size using an email address. Not sure how it works. I imagine it sends
a url for the receiver to then download from. Assuming your connection is
quick I'm sure someone can shoot them to you this way. We may have to start
a thread...

Hey guys! I use AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) for shooting somebody a large
file. It's free. it's faster and it works. It is a lot faster than Email.
I have also used Skype, it works too, but it seems a little slower. Both
will work with Mac or PC. It's kind of like having a net work connection
over the internet. With AIM, you can have a direction connection for privacy,
this connects the two computers directly. It's like a secret that nobody
knows about, I say give it a try, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Google, Yahoo, MSN all have free IM software, but try AIM first.

I'll have to look into AIM. Personally, I'm a bit leery of installing
anything to do with AOL. I just don't trust them I guess from bad
experiences years and years ago.
I have a few email addresses, and I think tony@mercysakes.com has the most
storage. I'm on a T1 at work and cable modem (T2 plus download speed) at
home, so that's not a problem. Someone with a fast upload connection should
be able to email the SMPTE files fairly quickly. That or send them to me on
a cd at:
